Can someone running this beta give a quick review? Or post screenshots? I'd like to know how it works before installing. And yeah I know it's beta so I don't expect it to be perfect.

Cross Post from my OP in the Oreo Thread

Hey! Look at that. I guess I was on to something a few weeks ago, huh? All those nay-sayers and Scooby-Don'ts said that the S8/S8+/Note 8 wouldn't get some delicious slices of beta pie, leaving us to wait until the official release next year. I knew we could do it. Hard work trumps everything.

Download Mirrors
The downloads took an excruciatingly long time on my fiber connection. Like 50-150KB/s. The 1.5GB Pie update zip took the longest, clocking in at 4 hours. Prob due to server load over at firmware.science. Here are two mirrors. Yes, you can trust my uploads, they are sig checked when being flashed.

G955U GS8+ Only. I'll snag the others and mirror them as well when I get a sec.
CRK1-to-CRL1.zip / 132MB / SHA1 8F95BA23525187C386C8949E5F64E913A8888398
CRL1-to-DRL5.zip / 1.52GB / SHA1 E27019A01BEDCC299EE0BD49649284B37BFAE8D2

Starting the Update / Flashing / Issues w/ ZIP
I was running into issues getting the update to run from the sdcard. That's typically what I've done in the past, copy it to the ext. sdcard, and then select zip from recovery. Didn't work this time. Kept saying sig check failed. I copied the files off the sdcard and compared SHA1, it matched. I had to download the latest version of ADB onto my PC, and use "adb sideload filename.zip" This is the only way that worked for me.

Initial Impressions
Didn't end up going to sleep, as I ended up playing around with this Pie build for quite some time. There are things that I do and don't like. Definitely voice your feedback to Samsung through the Members or Samsung+ app. Back in the Oreo beta, there were several things that people pointed out that they hated, and they did fix them. Ex. we got them to change the cookie emoji from crackers to actual cookies.

There's a fair bit a lag at first. I let everything settle in while I poked around, and then rebooted a few times. Helped quite a bit. I later cleared the cache, which didn't seem to make any difference. I did have to clear data on a few apps that were crashing. Overall it's fairly smooth. I don't like the system wide icon pack. Looks like it's in "kids mode." They overdid it on some of the rounded corners. Overall, it's def beta quality. Not 100% what you'd expect from a polished stable release, but good enough for me to use as a daily driver.

Yeah but there's quite a few Canadians who want to Flash the One UI beta for their S8/S8+ devices as well & They (we) Absolutely must use Odin to Flash the US Oreo Firmware before Flashing the One UI betas ??️
Ah my bad-- I think I may have just done the typical American thing and assumed everyone who was using snapdragon s8/s8+ must've been American. Forgot about our Canadian neighbors ;)

Cheers.

To those who want ad blocking on pie:
install dns66
https://github.com/julian-klode/dns66/blob/master/README.md

Import my config file (uses Steven Blacks host file and cloudflare dns(others included as options))

https://github.com/jwarrior319/dns66_config?files=1

After setup open Chrome and type chrome://flags
Search for async dns and set to disabled

Works perfect for me

Good tip. Tho, I've had problems with ad blocking, hosts file blocks a lot of other stuff. Advertisers are getting smarter, and if a ping to the ad servers fails, I've seen some apps out right not throw an error. Inbox is common for being unable to refresh.

Mods I've Made to My Phone. / I Don't Miss Root These Days.
  • Package Disabler Pro. Uses Knox to suspend/remove apps. Careful tho, if you disable something you shouldn't have, you'll have to factory reset. It's not permanente, but still freaking awesome.
  • DNS66.
  • Kiwi Browser. Uses the Chromium code-base, so looks exactly like Chrome. They have a nice adblocker that is more based on an algorithm, and not a host file. I also have the bottom address bar enabled. (Not the stupid duet which takes up more real estate.) I have the icon changed to Chrome and the name in Nova changed to Chrome.
  • Nova Launcher Premium
  • Circle Oreo / Pie style icon pack. There are several good ones, I've been using Pireo.
  • Google Dialer. Go to App Info, change Dialer Default to Google Dialer.
  • Google Contacts. Go to App Info, change Contacts Default to Google Contacts.
  • Google Messages. Go to App Info, change SMS Default to Google Messages.
  • Google Keyboard. Go to Settings and change default input method to GBoard. Specifically using the 7.5.12 version, and refuse to update. Most reliable and best for rapid typing with two thumbs.
  • Google Calendar.
  • Performance:
I have Device Maintenance Put Always to Sleep setup to auto-suspend Facebook, Tinder, other dating apps, and other crap that I don't need ever running in the background. You'd be surprised how happier you are with notifications for this bullshit turned off, and the apps not wasting CPU on your phone.
Auto-update apps turned off in Play Store. Yeah, not happening. Not only do I not want random crap downloading when I'm trying to rapid type an email, but I have ran into many updates that I've had to revert back. Like Plex, some updates are step backward.
  • Nova Launcher. Hide the Samsung apps that I don't disable.
  • I keep the Samsung Dialer and Contacts apps active, as I have a contact card for "Spam" over a thousand #s I've saved over the years that shared and synced between all the businesses I manage, This contact card is set to block on all VoIP systems, and through the Samsung Dialer (as it is the one that controls blocking, even tho you set Google as default. Little weird, but works.)

I keep getting an error that sideload cannot read the CRL1 to DR5 update. Any ideas?

You didn't extract the zip did you? Try dragging the zip file into Platform-Tools window & if you're using Windows Power Shell - Type:

.\adb sideload <filename.zip>

And on your phone in Recovery - Apply update from adb - or is that what you're trying to do?

Check the SHA1 hash. Make sure your adb is updated, it actually wouldn't let me run any commands without doing that. Put the file path in quotes too. So for example,
adb sideload "C:\Users\jabza\Desktop\CRL1-to-DR5.zip"

Most awesome Samsung experience I've had. I love everything about it. Its fast, doesn't seem to slow down over time. The night mode (dark theme) is awesome. I run it 24/7. One UI is much easier to navigate. Samsung text app is really nice in night mode. Complete daily driver and its a beta! Batery seems about the same as Oreo. Only thing I've found not working is routines with good lock 2018. I'd definitely recommend it!!! Have it on my Note 8 also, It has a second beta, not sure the differences as i mainly use the 8+. Cant wait for the s10 now!! Not gonna post screenshots as google has plenty.

Thanks for the review. Gonna be trying it out for myself. I don't use Good Lock so I'm not gonna miss Routines.

I tried sideloading CRL1 to DRL5 from both SD card and ABD and always ends up with Permission denied error. I am on a s8+ ATT. Any ideas what I am doing wrong ?
Odin back to crk1, let it boot. Then sideload your updates, letting it boot between. I'm on at&t also and that's how I had to do it

Hey I tried to Odin to crk1 using files from https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-galaxy-s8-snapdragon-install-closed-one-ui-android-pie-beta/ but it failed immediately and the phone struck at "An error occurred while updating device software. Use emergency recovery function in Smart switch PC software" Any idea how to fix it ?
