He has t-mobile version so theoretically if he installs from the same carrier tmb February security patch he should be fine?

Pretty much all modern phones have a downgrade protection built in, therefore it's not possible to flash it with an older firmware. There's no way around it, don't waste your time. If you've already upgraded beyond the unlockable bootloader version, you're out of luck for now.

Hi there.

I wonder if you can answer my question. If I buy a brand new Canadian version of the Samsung S10e (G970W), will the firmware it comes installed with be possible to unlock (i.e. v4 or below bootloader), or will it ship with a later version?

Many thanks.

Chances are that it will come upgraded with a non-unlockable bootloader version, unless you get lucky and get an old non-upgraded stock. Before buying it, ask the seller to take a picture of the screen Settings > About > Software version, and look at the 5th digit/character from right to left.

Just to add to this - I am based in Europe, so could quite easily purchase a Exynos model, but have heard that the Snapdragon has superior performance. Would it be easier for me to go for a Exynos instead, or is it worth the hassle of going the SD route?

I have exynos it can run anything u throw at it
I've heard that the battery performance and picture quality is better on the SD, and also have the issue of brand new S10es being unavailable in the UK.

So my situation is thus: spend £228.66 on a new SD model (which is arguably superior) but possibly risk not being able to unlock it, or spend ≈£180 on a refurbished Exynos model, which is easier to customise.

If you're Europe then the Exynos is a better choice, since the bands are a better match for your network. While the QCom Snapdragon has slightly better performance and has matching bands for the US, the ease or rooting the Exynos far outweighs the benefits, and you can upgrade the firmware with the latest version and re-root it anytime without all the hassle. ;)

It does seem like less hassle to get the Europe version. I was swayed partly in that the SD model would be brand new (as far as I can tell) rather than a refurbished model. But then there's the added risk of getting it shipped transatlantic and not easily being able to return it. I will go with Exynos then!! Thanks for your help, everyone.

Not only less hassle to get the European Exynos version, but also to root it since you can upgrade it at any time without having to worry about the bootloader version like on the SD version. The SD S10E (G970U/U1 SD) and even the G970F (Exynos) will most likely be refurbs despite what the sellers claim. It's been discontinued for years now, so it's unlikely you'll find a new, never opened stock somewhere. Crafty sellers repackage them really well, fooling most buyers. It's better to buy it from an individual user than from a "company", since those are more likely to be refurbs. Just a heads up. ;)
