androidIMATIONS | Custom Boot Animations for Android | New Animation & Video 10.29.10
In response to the interest in some of the boot animations I've been posting in a different thread, it was suggested I start a new thread where I can better categorize and display these animations. With that, I welcome you to...
androidIMATIONS | Custom Boot Animations for Android
This thread will be running and regularly (I hope) updated log of my boot animations. Hopefully, this will make it easy for you to find a custom boot animation that suits your personality, and shows your love of your Android device.
STANDARD WARNING BOILERPLATE: Downloading and attempting to install any of these animations assumes that you know what you're doing and you absolve me and all other parties of any liability for turning your expensive handheld computer into an expensive paperweight. No support is provided for installation or issues arising from the installation of these animations. In short, you're on your own.
With that out of the way, a couple of quick notes:
These animations are all created to specifically work on the AT&T/Samsung Captivate, and have only been tested as running on Design Gears' excellent Froyo-based Cognition v2.2 beta 8.1 or greater. Whether they will work on another device or ROM, I cannot say. They all follow the standard "bootanimation.zip" structure, which I believe is universal across Android devices, but I don't know enough (read: anything) about how Android works to say that with any conviction. However, if there is sufficient interest for other devices and resolutions, I'll explore creating multiple versions of each animation.
I will try to maintain a changelog of each individual animation, as warranted. For the most part, these will be "final" once they are posted, but I'm not perfect and occasionally I find a bug or visual quirk that I will remedy and post as an updated version. If you like a particular animation but would like some variant of it--different background color, for example--post a request and I'll attempt to comply.
At present, there are four categories for which I'm planning to create animations; the posts immediately following this one will contain each category's animations.
When in ROM...
Show your geek love for your ROM of choice
The Superiority Complex
The Android's epic pwn of other mobile OSes
POP! Goes the Android
Your favorite green guy in the annals of pop culture history
Mixed Bag
Anything that looks nifty-keen but doesn't fit anywhere else
Hopefully, you'll find something that interests you enough to install it, but if not, let me know your ideas and I'll see what I can do. If you like my animations, and are feeling especially generous of a poor, starving thirsty artist, perhaps you'll be compelled to slide a craft beer or two my way (hinthintnudgenudge). Ultimately, though, if I know you're looking at one of my animations every time you start up your phone, that's pretty cool.
I'll update this overview as necessary. I'm working on a number of new boot animation concepts (more keep popping into my addled mind all the time), and I'm also considering expanding the effort to include start-up sounds, shutdown animations and sounds, and wallpapers. If you're a developer/code ninja, I'd be interested in talking to you about a way to semi-automate or at least ease the installation of these various elements. Shoot me a message if you're feeling saucy...
INSTALLATION
My preferred method of installing these boot animations, after download/copying to the phone's SD card, is to use a terminal emulator and issue the following commands:
Replace [filelocation] and [bootanimation-name] with the relevant information.
Moderator zelendel offered this alternative installation method (thanks for posting!):
VIDEOS
Since the only way you can see these things is if you reboot your phone, some folks have expressed interest in downloadable videos for the animations. I'm happy to comply; videos are now available! Note that, due vertical orientation of the videos, these only seem to play back correctly in the built-in Video Player app; other video players, like those included with some file manager, will auto-rotate and you'll be fighting to view the video in the proper orientation.
COURTESY NOTE: If you post a reply in this thread, please delete the GIFs from your quoted reply, or just don't use a quote. I'm not quite sure what's going to happen once we get a few dozen/hundred of these things flashing at once.Without further ado, on to the animations. Thanks for watching.
