androidIMATIONS | Custom Boot Animations for Android | New Animation & Video 10.29.10

In response to the interest in some of the boot animations I've been posting in a different thread, it was suggested I start a new thread where I can better categorize and display these animations. With that, I welcome you to...

androidIMATIONS | Custom Boot Animations for Android

This thread will be running and regularly (I hope) updated log of my boot animations. Hopefully, this will make it easy for you to find a custom boot animation that suits your personality, and shows your love of your Android device.

STANDARD WARNING BOILERPLATE: Downloading and attempting to install any of these animations assumes that you know what you're doing and you absolve me and all other parties of any liability for turning your expensive handheld computer into an expensive paperweight. No support is provided for installation or issues arising from the installation of these animations. In short, you're on your own.

With that out of the way, a couple of quick notes:

These animations are all created to specifically work on the AT&T/Samsung Captivate, and have only been tested as running on Design Gears' excellent Froyo-based Cognition v2.2 beta 8.1 or greater. Whether they will work on another device or ROM, I cannot say. They all follow the standard "bootanimation.zip" structure, which I believe is universal across Android devices, but I don't know enough (read: anything) about how Android works to say that with any conviction. However, if there is sufficient interest for other devices and resolutions, I'll explore creating multiple versions of each animation.

I will try to maintain a changelog of each individual animation, as warranted. For the most part, these will be "final" once they are posted, but I'm not perfect and occasionally I find a bug or visual quirk that I will remedy and post as an updated version. If you like a particular animation but would like some variant of it--different background color, for example--post a request and I'll attempt to comply.

At present, there are four categories for which I'm planning to create animations; the posts immediately following this one will contain each category's animations.

When in ROM...

Show your geek love for your ROM of choice

The Superiority Complex
The Android's epic pwn of other mobile OSes

POP! Goes the Android
Your favorite green guy in the annals of pop culture history

Mixed Bag
Anything that looks nifty-keen but doesn't fit anywhere else

Hopefully, you'll find something that interests you enough to install it, but if not, let me know your ideas and I'll see what I can do. If you like my animations, and are feeling especially generous of a poor, starving thirsty artist, perhaps you'll be compelled to slide a craft beer or two my way (hinthintnudgenudge). Ultimately, though, if I know you're looking at one of my animations every time you start up your phone, that's pretty cool.

I'll update this overview as necessary. I'm working on a number of new boot animation concepts (more keep popping into my addled mind all the time), and I'm also considering expanding the effort to include start-up sounds, shutdown animations and sounds, and wallpapers. If you're a developer/code ninja, I'd be interested in talking to you about a way to semi-automate or at least ease the installation of these various elements. Shoot me a message if you're feeling saucy...

INSTALLATION

My preferred method of installing these boot animations, after download/copying to the phone's SD card, is to use a terminal emulator and issue the following commands:

Code:
su
cp /sdcard/[filelocation]/[bootanimation-name].zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip
reboot
Replace [filelocation] and [bootanimation-name] with the relevant information.

Moderator zelendel offered this alternative installation method (thanks for posting!):

  1. Download Zip
  2. Rename zip so its name is bootanimation.zip
  3. Put zip on SD card
  4. Using Root Explorer, copy zip to /system/media/
  5. Reboot
  6. Watch and lol
Again, I only know definitively that these work on Cognition v2.2 beta 8.1+; for other ROMs, you're on your own.

VIDEOS

Since the only way you can see these things is if you reboot your phone, some folks have expressed interest in downloadable videos for the animations. I'm happy to comply; videos are now available! Note that, due vertical orientation of the videos, these only seem to play back correctly in the built-in Video Player app; other video players, like those included with some file manager, will auto-rotate and you'll be fighting to view the video in the proper orientation.

COURTESY NOTE: If you post a reply in this thread, please delete the GIFs from your quoted reply, or just don't use a quote. I'm not quite sure what's going to happen once we get a few dozen/hundred of these things flashing at once.Without further ado, on to the animations. Thanks for watching.

androidIMATIONS | When In ROM...

Right now, all of my current ROM-specific animations are for Cognition; I don't see myself using another ROM anytime soon, as my other experiments have been nigh on disastrous. Cognition lends itself particularly well to animation, since it has a "theme" of sorts. However, if you have a specific ROM that you use and would like a customized animation to use with it, please post a request and some details of what you like, and I'll see what I can do--no promises.

To download, click the title of the animation or the animated GIF.

By the way: I'm retiring the "beta-branded" versions of the Cognition animations. It'll simply be too much to keep up with.

COGNITION V2.2 | ELECTRIC

v1.1 - dropped "beta" tag, fixed electric arcs to be more natural

COGNITION V2.2 | THE NEW DOPE

v1.0 - initial release

Hmm.. idea for a new animation.

How bout the apple logo with the stem of the apple as the fuse?
The fuse goes down and explodes the apple.

<insert snappy logo/catchphrase etc.. here>

Then our friendly green Robot with Android underneath it.

I dislike you. Your "apple is for nom" boot animation makes me reboot my phone far too often. :p
Awww... that's the nicest thing anyone's ever said :D

Heh. It would be funny to do a Spy vs. Spy ala Mad Magazine version with this theme ;)

Great Thread, Great Animations!!
Thanks!

Should have a new one for all y'all in a couple hours; that'll be my last submission until next week.

Nice idea!

I like that... put a lighter in our little green friends hand after the apple blows up. :D

These are great!!!

Keep rebooting my phone to watch it!

love it!:D
Heh. Yeah, such is the bane of having a 10-second window in which to display your art :p

Actually, if you guys are interested, I can probably export MP4s of these, so that you can download them and play them back from your SD card. It would probably help you avoid burning out your power button

I'll try to upload some of those after I get this next animation done...

Outstanding work. Love the MP4 idea, I have rebooted my phone a dozen time to show off the exploding apple lmao

That would be killer! ya, so I work at AT&T and I keep showing my co-worker who traded out of her cappy, to the apple (which are for nom!) just how cool all the android customizing is.

Jealous she is:p

Is there a way for you to make these livewallpapers? That would be most awesome!:D
ya, there is an app in the market that should allow you to do that. you just need all the individual .png files, which are in the bootanimation.zip

hmmm, I have some time to kill maybe i'll try and see what I can come up with, if you dont mind cmbrougham

Hmm, didn't open for me. It said it was an invalid apk

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I uninstalled it. Went back into the thread here on my cappy, found my link, downloaded it again, and it worked for me.

Can we get someone else to download this and install it.

fatttire: you are rooted and all that other happiness right?

Just keep up the good work man! These are great. Have you given any thought to live wallpapers? I usually don't use live wallpapers but would if some of these were tailored a bit.

on a different note, what about the android taking a bite of the apple and crapping out a blackberry? just spit balling...
