Nothing. But in it's current state, you won't be able to use a foreign SIM (and consequently get cheap local rates) in the D2G in any of the yellow countries:

Do we know that is true? Isn't it possible that these bands are just locked down in the US (or for the US Carriers)? That's why we need someone to try in Canada!

So far it is just the US bands. I believe you can use an AT&T sim card out of the country. But that really doesn't help us.

It looks like I was wrong. Someone just posted on droidforums that he was able to use the D2G with two GSM 1900 providers in Chile.

So you're right, it seems to just be a US GSM restriction.

Sorry for jumping the gun guys :/

I am from Canada and I am looking to replace my Milestone with a Droid 2 Global. I was thinking buying one off contract from Verizon, unlocking it and use it up here in Canada. This "frequency lockout" or "operator lockout" however is quite disturbing and sort of a show stopper for now (considering I have to dump $600+ to acquire the phone). I am pretty sure this is a software restriction enforced by Verizon's ROM and (I guess similarly to SIM lock) could be taken off. Question is how long it will take until somebody figures this out...

Two things concern me - if it is an "operator lockout" and Verizon banned AT&T and T-Mobile US only, phone would work fine in Canada on Rogers/Telus/Bell (based on the report phone worked in Chile on 1900MHz. However, I wonder if WCDMA bands will be all useable too (would the phone be fully functional in Canada on 2G/3G)
Considering above is ok, the second one remains - I won't be able to use the phone while travelling to the US (based on report that UK SIM couldn't register to any network while in US I read on the board). This is not such a huge problem as I don't go south that often, but still - bothers me.

If somebody is willing to ship his/her Droid 2 Global up here to me I can test with Rogers/Fido and Telus 2G/3G networks. I am totally ok taking the return shipping fee (I am really interested in this phone). I know there is a serious amount of trust required for something like that but if anyone is interested, PM me.

Well it appears at least one person has successfully connected the Droid Pro to AT&T and T-Mobile, although he hasn't revealed how he did it. He got 3G to work on AT&T, but could only get EDGE on T-Mobile. Apparently it is "very very risky" according to the guy who posted the pics. Check it out here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ssion-here?p=14130400&highlight=#post14130400

It has to be a Verizon employee. Anybody else with these skills are in our developing community and would gladly help us with this problem. I am betting it is a Verizon employee taunting us. But at least its possible, so we are getting closer.

EDIT- It is also possible these pictures weren't taken in the US, AT&T and Tmobile have both been reported to be working on these phones out of the country. We will just have to wait and find out.

EDIT- I wonder if it would work flashing a milestone 2 radio?

I finally got my SIM unlocked. It wasn't cheap, but I'm halfway there.

I've been following all the threads in all the forums concerning this issue. It's a shame that Verizon brands this as a "quadband" phone, yet lock out the bands major US carriers use. Does that really make it a "world phone?" No, it doesn't.

With this said, I will gladly donate to whoever find us a fix. I would rather a developer get my hard earned money than Verizon.

Could you elaborate on this? Did you use a third-party unlocking service? How much did they charge?

Well to be fair it seems ever since we got confirmation earlier today of the D2G working on a GSM 1900 network in Chile, that the device is only restricted from connecting to US GSM carriers, most likely via a carrier lock (as opposed to a band lock)

But it looks like we are very close to a fix

Believe it or not, I went to ebay. Steep $50.

MOD EDIT: Ebay Link

I purchased the phone from a local Verizon store on a prepaid plan without actually activating it. I saved $150 this way, $392 vs. $559 with no activation fee. So Im really hoping we can get a fix as of now, it's just a pretty paperweight ;)

$400 bucks off contract for a phone like this isn't bad at all. How did you get away with purchasing the phone prepaid? I thought they didn't allow that with smartphones?

Now if we could just figure out what's blocking the AT & T 3G Band, there could be a viable Android option on AT&T. The only other thing I have seen is the HTC Desire Z (Canada Bell Version) unlocked but that is fetching close to $600 on Ebay right now.

> I got really lucky. I went the day they went online, the 9th. I told the guy what my intent was, to unlock and use on AT&T. (I've been a loyal customer for years and have a corporate discount :D) He tried to get me on a month to month and I told him I'd end up canceling after a month. He wanted the sale and I wanted the phone and he found a way to get the sale credit and me a discount. Everyone wins!

>I've had a lot of Android phones, Aria, Captivate, MT3GS, G2 and this is by far the one I like best. Im really hoping we can get a fix on this issue. Im not happy with AT&T's android selection and not a big iPhone fan. I do hope that it's a simple fix.

That's too bad that a certain group decided to be greedy on this. I can understand charging that much if there was a guarantee of it working, but the secret should have been released for free with a disclaimer that they weren't responsible if you messed up your phone. I would even be happy to pay the $3 that they charge for their app in order to get access to the necessary files (which I find kind of off-putting, as well, since it kind of forces a donation, in a way).

Hopefully we'll see a free leak at some point, so those that are willing to take the risks themselves are free to do so.
