No you have to be rooted to get the 5ghz band once rooted no problem finding and enabling on us version us firmware
Ok, I did the update and got root installed again. I'm trying to get the 5ghz band working again. I think the last time I did it, I changed this file: /cust_spec/system/etc/cfg_btv_wifi_only_hisi.ini
On the updated version, I can't find a /cust_spec/system folder and I can't find that ini file. If you got it to work, which file did you change?

Finally got the update on the 9th (1 day late). No performance boost in D/L speed. I'm not going to root because 25Mbps is perfectly fine for my use, but my hope is that one day they get the FCC approval to turn on the 5GHz band on the U.S. models and push the change in a future update so I can get my full 50Mbps D/L speed.

I've looked under cust_spec and everywhere else I can think of, but I can't find the file. Are you sure they didn't change the name of the file?
No name change if I remember right besides hiding it there are 2 folders with that

sorry but I know it is there for a fact because after I upgraded and rooted I got back to it, not as easy ass the first time but I eventually found it I used solid explorer. Also be careful I have seen people say you have to flash that to get the settings, that is absolutely untrue it is in the root of your phone enable the same way you did before change =0 to=1

Ok, I found it. For anybody else who's looking, here's what seems to work:

File location: /cust_spec/(version)/special_cust/BTV-W09/ hw/usa/vendor/etc/cfg_btv_hisi.ini
Search within the file for the section after#wifi call params
Change 'band_5g_enable=0 ' to 'band_5g_enable=1'

Reboot and it should stick.

I used Solid Explorer and the SE Explorer file editor. Of course, you have to be rooted to do this.

I think the file in the previous version had a different name, but I'm not sure. It might have been: /cust_spec/system/etc/cfg_btv_wifi_only_hisi.ini

With the BTV-W09128B352 update. Root went well. TWRP class just fine. SU role device just fine. Device runs great. A little smoother than before. A few aesthetic changes with settings & status bar icons. The main thing the update did was patch the 5Ghz exploit. No longer able to be done in the path that was previously discover for the US model. Going that someone figures out another one fast. I hate being on dual-up again.

Thanks! The path was different on mine. But your direction led me to it. Much appreciation. /cust_spec/vendor/etc select cfg_btv_hisi.ini. A little more then half of the way down, change "band_5g_enable" 0 to 1.

that sux; I bought one for my wife a month ago, and returned it for that reason; she wants me to buy it again, and I thought I read that they fixed that major mistake, but, it looks like they havent..
Oh well, guess I will just over pay and buy her a samsung, since they dont cripple the wifi on their tablets like this

Just my opinion, but I switched from a Galaxy Tab S (which I think is the best Samsung Tab) to the Mediapad. I switched mostly because my battery was old and I couldn't find a new one that was any good. It took a while to adjust to the Mediapad, but now I like it much better than the Tab S. The downside for the Mediapad is that the community of users is small and support is spotty. In order to get it working optimally, you will have to dive in and unlock the bootloader, root, etc. I always do this with my Android devices anyway, but I understand that not everybody wants to invest the time and work to get all that together.

Unfortunately, Android tablets are very much a niche market and most of them suck. If you want to get the most out of them, you kind of have to be your own support person.

agreed; I have been rooting android stuff for many years, but, since this tablet is for my wife, and she uses her stuff for corporate work sometimes, and rooting can cause issues, I rarely root any of her stuff..
It sucks that Huawei has ruined this tablet by making it so difficult to turn on something as basic as 5ghz wifi, especially when the firmware has it built in..this is why they will NEVER be a "major" player in the US market..stupid stuff like this just alienates tons of potential buyers..

I agree that not activating 5Ghz wifi is pretty Mickey Mouse. My guess is that they didn't want to go through the FCC licensing process to activate 5Ghz in the US. As far as using the tab for your wife, I suppose you could root it, fix the wifi, then unroot it to meet her corporate requirements. I think you can relock the bootloader without wiping the device, but I don't remember for sure. You will definitely wipe the device when you unlock the bootloader.

yes, its easy to do all that, but I try not to support phucked up companies like Huawei, who do stupid stuff like this and dont work for the customers, but just for their corporate interests..If you dont vote with your checkbook, you dont have any other way to express your dislike for lousy corporations..

Wouldn't installing the European FW be the easiest solution for this problem?

As someone who has rooted in the past, but inexperienced with recent Huawei devices, can Euro FW be flashed without root? Will it get Euro updates?

Thanks in advance. (Sorry for the noobish questions.)

Found it on the US tablet!

Using Root Explorer I went to /cust_spec/system/etc/cfg_btv_wifi_only_hisi.ini
band_5g_enable=0 change it to band_5g_enable=1
Then restarted and I could see and connect to my 5Ghz network.
So far it seems to work fine but we are talking minutes since I got it changed.
@E.Vogel @Slavon-93
Sorry to be asking the obvious, but does my tablet need to be rooted to make these changes with Root Explorer? Thanks!
