Anyone got LOS 16.0 + Three UK + native WiFi calling working?

Hi all,

I'm currently running LineageOS 16.0 on my OnePlus 3T on the Three UK network and was wondering if anyone out there has managed to get native WiFi calling working in a setup like this?

I get zero mobile reception at my work so for over a year now have been using the Three inTouch WiFi calling app which has been pretty good, however last week I received a message saying that due to upcoming network upgrades Three will be retiring the app in a month or two so I now would like to be able to use Android's native WiFi calling if this is at all possible.

Three's website says that WiFi calling is only supported on Android on handsets purchased from them on contract, however I'm a SIM-only customer. I've got the latest OxygenOS modem firmware etc. installed as far as I'm aware, so was wondering if any of you clever people here on XDA have managed to find any unofficial ways of getting the native WiFi calling working for any old network?

Wifi calling is working out of the box for me. VoLTE too*. (LOS+3+SIM only+OP3/T) Been working with that setup since the beginning of LOS16.

*With 3 you'll only connect to VoLTE when 3G is unavailable as they prioritise in that order. For some reason they don't like people to use 'Super Voice', even though they advertise it as a feature. There's a big thread on the Digital Spy forum covering 3 and 4G in the UK that you might find useful.

Edit: Try the field test number. Enter *#*#4636#*#* in the Dialer. Is Wifi Calling 'Provisioned'. See my own screenshot:

On my stock op3t there is no WiFi calling toggle to switch on. That probably explains why I don't have it despite being able to switch it on under enhanced communications under sim settings.

Is there a way to activate it? The volte calling I got by doing a code thing.

Yes the "Wi-Fi Calling provisioned" toggle is on.

I've just upgraded to the latest LOS 16.0 nightly (2019-05-02) but still no sign of the native Wi-Fi calling working.

You said you've had it working since the start of LOS 16.0. I upgraded to 16.0 over-the-top directly from 15.1, do you think that could have anything to do with it?

Are there any settings in the SIM itself which could be needed to enable Wi-Fi calling? I think my SIM is a good 3 years old or so, would swapping it for a newer one be any use do you think?

What exactly are you doing to test that it's working or not? Have you made a call with Wifi on/Mobile signal absent?

Is there anything particularly unusual or unique about the Wifi network you've been trying this with? Have you tried other Wifi networks?

I've finally managed to get lineage 16 installed on my phone but I still can't get WiFi calling with my three sim card. The settings seems to be the same as yours. Not do I have the icons for WiFi calling or wokte at the top of the screen which I had with oos 9.0.6.

My flawed testing. I'd forgotten about this thread. VoWifi is a no go. VoLTE works, but with Three caveats. See what i posted here:

Thanks for the update. I better get a new phone soon despite mine works fine outside my home (were I am now locked away for the foreseeable future).
Saw something about a volte wowifi module on one of the android ten ROMs but not sure if it just enabled volte. Thing it was the havoc ROM

OcUK. User name looks familiar.

We're having this conversation in multiple threads.

VoWifi does NOT work, despite any previous assertions to the contrary. As i mentioned, it was flawed testing methodology.

VoLTE does work, but with Three network restrictions. i.e only when there is no normal 4G (1800Mhz) or 3G available. VoLTE is only carried on the 800Mhz band, which is prioritised lowest.

There are two very long Three 4G threads on the Digital Spy forums. Worth reading if you want the long version of what i have stated above.

Edit: Just a suggestion. Try this app so that you can monitor what Bands you are connecting to at any given time:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wilysis.cellinfolite&hl=en

What you need for VoLTE to work is Band 20. (800Mhz)

I posted the link here as I thought it was more relevant here.

The app is telling me I have band 20 so volte should be achievable but doesn't seem to be working on lineage (worked fine on OOS 9.0.6)

To save time can you post a screenshot with the App displaying that information?

'Connected to Band 20' is what we're looking for, rather than 'is available'.

I'm guessing this is the screen you want.

I also installed VOenabler v1.7 which seems to have restored volte. I haven't seen the volte icon but I'm still at home.

Edit: I installed the module before installing the bandwidth app.

It looks like you have Wifi turned on in those screenshots. If you turn it off you should be able to make a VoLTE call. At least it looks like you should.

So has 3G always been bad where you are? I assume you don't have 3G or normal 4G reception at all? (Bands 1 & 3)

I almost always connect to one of those two in my area, although where i am now it looks like some neighbouring towers do carry Band 20. I just need to destroy the other towers to connect to it!

It's abysmal. I'm in a Victorian basement. The only reason I went with three was the WiFi calling app.

Have left the house now for some air and now I band 1 so I'm guessing I'm connected to a different tower.

So what you're seeing is evidence of Three de-prioritising Band 20. As 800Mhz has better building penetration it's all you're getting while inside. When you step outside you begin to pick up the other Bands which you are immediately switched to, whether you lke it or not.

I only latch on to Band 20 once in a Blue Moon. The coverage of the other Bands is almost total so i don't stand a chance!

VoWifi is another matter altogether. If it could work with the 'intouch' app there must be something in the app that could be added to our ROMs natively. That's my logic anyway. (Also support is added to phones bought from Three using their official ROMs, so the same logic applies).

I thought newer phones had WiFi calling by default and didn't need to rely on the carrier.

That's a very good shout but way beyond my skills. Maybe it can be suggested?

This is the official word from Three:

http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Three_inTouch

They say 'update' which suggests that people who bought phones on contract might have received an OTA which enabled VoWifi. How much would we love to get a copy of that OTA zip!

Poor us who bought our phones right out. I wonder if this is the case for newer phones too.

There must be someway to get that zip!
