I could not Gmail to work properly on the Mix Fold 2, but had better experience with the Vivo X Fold and Oppo Find N. However, I started using an email app called "Edison" for Gmail and it has been a far better experience for Gmail. For those having issues with Gmail notifications, it is worthwhile to give Edison a try!
Brilliant! Thank you for your suggestion. Edison mail is working perfectly. All push notifications for all of my email accounts come in instantly, even on the lock screen.

@AndroPlus

If I use this method posted by another user , will AA be removed if Magisk is uninstalled ?

The idea is to make android auto an system app with privilege. You will need the following:
- Magisk
- Busybox for Android NDK (Magisk Module)
- App Systemizer (Terminal Emulator) (Magisk Module)
- Apk for Android Auto ap

After installing the two modules in Magisk, run the systemizer as 'SU'. Select "3 - Systemize given apk", then type in full path of your downloaded android auto apk. Under "where to install", select "2 /system/priv-app". After restart, it likely will work if you are in the same situation as mine.
App Systemizer is also Magisk module, so uninstalling Magisk will cause it to lose its effectiveness.
You can use Android Auto if you remount /product as rw and modify it in the same way as the module, but it breaks dm-verity and cause bootloop if failed to mod.

This is just a quick user summery for those thinking of importing Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 over to UK. I’ve had mine for just over a week now and I’m happy with it so far pretty much all working and I’m using it on EE network.

Push notifications has been a challenge as there is several settings (detailed below) that needs to be done in order get the notification working fully for your desired apps that being said as some pointed out here even after applying these settings some apps still not getting notifications immediately. Lucky for me these settings are working so no need to root the phone.

Having used Galaxy Z Fold 2/3 for last couple years hardware wise I think Mix Fold 2 is superior, it feels better in the hand just like using a normal phone, most everyday task can be done on the cover screen while the inner screen is great for multi-tasking, media consumption and web browsing etc…

However, software wise the Samsung One UI Fold 2/3 & 4 is far more polished than Xiaomi MIU, so if software is of paramount to you and bearing mind Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is not IP rated and does not have true Flex mode then I would recommend sticking with Galaxy Z Fold 3/4.

For me I’m ok to compromise a little on the software side just to have a better hardware experience on Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 especially the in hand feeling and IP rating doesn’t bother me as I had the Galaxy Fold 2 had no issues and never used Flex mode.

Settings I enabled:

STEP 1:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Scroll down to the Apps sub-menu.
  3. Select Permissions.
  4. Tap Autostart.
  5. Choose the apps that you want push notifications.
  6. Toggle the slider to ensure the apps always start automatically in the background.
STEP 2:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Battery
  3. Tap the Setting/Cog Top Right corner
  4. Under Lock Screen Settings - Turn off mobile data when device is locked set to Never
  5. Under Lock Screen Settings – Clear Cache when device is locked set to Never
STEP 3:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Battery
  3. Tap the Setting/Cog Top Right corner
  4. Scroll down to App Battery Saver
  5. Select the App that you want push notifications.
  6. Choose No restrictions.

STEP 4:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Battery
  3. Tap the Setting/Cog Top Right corner
  4. Scroll down to Scenarios
  5. Disable Sleep mode

STEP 5:
  1. Launch Security app
  2. Select Battery
  3. Tap the Setting/Cog Top Right corner
  4. Scroll down to Boost speed
  5. Select Lock Apps
  6. Select the App that you want and toggle slider to Lock app in the background

Pros

  • Incredibly thin light premium build.
  • Large cover/inner folding screen than competition
  • Zero gap fold mechanism
  • Leica Camera OK for most shots
+ Softer crease less visible inner screen with AR
+ IR blaster nice to have

Cons

  • Software not polished as competition
  • No flex mode
  • No IP Rating
  • Aggressive Battery Management
  • China Only No Global Release

this is a solid write up. this article provides a good guide to battery/notifications as well

add the DozeOff add from F-droid store as well and that really helps.

unlocking/rooting/magisk modules can solve nearly every problem though. when you can unlock and root always choose the best hardware. I will not go back to Samsung anytime soon if they can't beat this hardware.

Keyboard: It has been mentioned before that GBoard does not allow you to use split keyboard unless you turn the device to landscape. In portrait on the main screen, the keyboard is in tablet UI, and comically huge to use. Do we have any good suggestions for a solid keyboard for this device or a magisk module or something to properly scale Gboard. On the Vivo X Fold and the Z Fold 4, the keyboard displays the appropriate scale in portrait.

yep, this is definitely a huge annoyance that I hope someone like @AndroPlus can fix. there is a module for one of the new xposed branches called App Settings Reborn that I think might work as you can modify the display size of each app with it. I got rid of Lposed though but someone who has it might want to try that.

what launchers have you found work well with the fold? I've used Nova for so many years I'm still using it - but might be willing to try something else.

Also, is there any way to prevent miui from zooming in custom wallpapers on the inner folding screen so much?

You can use Rboard to force split keyboard in portrait.
1. Install Rboard and setup
2. Extract attached zip
3. Copy FoldableSplit.rboard file to the phone and open it in any file manager
4. Select Rboard to import the flags

From what I have tried on my (now sadly stolen) Vivo X Fold, the only 3rd party launcher with full support for two separate home screens is Total Launcher. It has immense customization options but it takes a while to get used to the way things are added to the screen. But I will definitely recommend giving it a chance if you don't like the stock MIUI one. I have tried living with Nova for a while but until they implement the two home screens support it is quite... not right...

Yes unfortunately GBoard split keyboard only works in landscape mode just like Gmail. I now use Microsoft SwiftKey which does give you split keyboard in portrait mode although you have to select it manually its not ideal but does the job anyway.

Otherwise you are looking at root to fix this issue.

Thanks for the reply! I have loaded in the flags however I cannot see the option in Gboard to select the split keyboard. I have turned on the flags after I imported them. Have I missed something?

Once you unlock the bootloader how easy it is to root?

Hi. I'm so sorry to ask this (I'm pretty sure its a basic question). But I got up to the last step for Magisk and i'm trying to do a fastboot flash boot but I get this error "error: cannot load '/path/to/magisk_patched.img'". What am I doing wrong??

Hi. I'm so sorry to ask this (I'm pretty sure its a basic question). But I followed the magisk instructions, and got right to the last part which was to reboot into fastboot mode and then fastboot the .img file. But it says < waiting for device > ... and I cant get past this point?? Can someone please give me some advice...??

You must have a driver problem and not have the drivers installed correctly.

Follow this guide https://www.xda-developers.com/install-adb-windows-macos-linux/

did you ever figure out how to fix this issue? I also have the same problem :(
I switched to Edison Mail. Works great. Fast notifications.

I rooted by patching the boot.img with Magisk as per Topjohnwu's instructions, but because he said flashing the modified vbmetal.img file was 'optional', I didn't bother with that and my device's seamless, undetectable root has worked fine with just the patched boot.img. All modules I've tried in Magisk work fine and I can use all my banking apps.
