Anyone replace a digitizer on a sensation yet?

When discussing screen compatibilities, it might help if everyone mentions what country you're from. Different version phones likely went to different countries, and saying a certain screen works in your phone might not be so helpful to someone in the States if you're from Europe. BTW, I'm in the US.
Well, I'm in Ireland and i bought the one of the digitizers shawndh recommended. He/She is from US and it worked. He's got the one with T-mobile logo from KH supplier and I got the one from the US supplier, unbranded. I'm sure our phones can't be from from same batch.
It looks like it's only a version problem rather than a combination of batch+digitizer.

I'm wondering if a screen recalibration might fix things? I'm using a Dell Streak as my spare until I get my Sensation working, and if you hold certain buttons while turning on, and enter a code, you get to a menu where you can check and calibrate just about everything, including the touch screen. Maybe this delay is really a recalibration when the phone realizes the stored parameters are not working? It would make sense, as I'm sure power is cut to the digitizer when the screen goes black, and if the stored parameters don't work, the screen recalibrates on the fly, and those settings may last until it loses power. Does anyone know if the Sensation has a Diag menu?
There's a software on the market that does some calibration, I tried it when i had a troubled digitizer, but no joy.

So I replaced my digitizer before I found this thread, and I got a random, unbranded digitizer off of Amazon.

The flex cable on the replacement says:

PYD v1.0
E21954[symbol]1
ru ICAC ichia
94V-0 1112

I have no idea what the original, T-mobile branded, digitizer had on the cable as I threw it away.

Since replacing the digitizer, I have had the same problems reported by others in this thread. The lock screen is minimally responsive for 15-20 seconds, then every thing is fine; ditto when the screen is blanked by the proximity sensor.

I found it difficult to replace the digitizer so I don't really want to try again. I thought I would see if there was a software solution.

I haven't made much headway, but I did find this:

There is a directory in the root of the file system at /sys/android_touch that contains a variety of files related to the digitizer. These files are periodically created, usually, but not always after the screen is reactivated from being asleep/powered down by the proximity sensor. Among those files is a file called "calibration." This file contains several rows of numbers that change each time the file is created. When I moved calibration to calibration.old the touch screen stopped responding until I put the screen to sleep with the power button and woke it back up. Upon waking, the /sys/android_touch folder was repopulated and calibration.old was gone.

Anyone know how /sys/android_touch is created? It seems to me that whatever is generating the files in that folder may be responsible for the lag with our mildly incompatible touch screens. I've trolled through dmesg and I can't find any obvious action creating those files...

OK, more results. I replaced my screen today, and there's no delay. However, the screen seems a little messed up. Sometimes it's hard to unlock the lock screen, or play Angry Birds without prematurely shooting the bird. I was concerned that, unlike the insides of any other phone I've seen or heard of, the tape between the digitizer and display was black, and seems to wrap around the display. I thought it could have been impregnated with carbon or something else conductive, and might be some kind of shielding, so I did my best to reuse it. Maybe I would have been better off ripping it out completely and using 3M tape.

Also, I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere (Wish it was before I took out the old screen), but there is a ribbon cable at the bottom of the screen. If you run your pry tool all the way around (Like I did), you have a good chance of cutting the cable in one or two places. This piece has the sensors and lights for the hard buttons, as well as the Microphone. Fortunately, the assembly is also available on Ebay.

Another note... Before my screen broke, the one thing I really hated about my phone was that everyone kept telling me to speak up. After I replaced the microphone/touch cable assembly, everyone can hear me fine.

Back to the digitizer... I noticed a few of the sellers on Ebay were bragging about how their digitizers were A quality, without bubbles. I used to think that was BS, but after putting in the screen, I realized there's an imperfection. I thought at first I missed a speck of dust, but you can see the surface is curved around the spot. Fortunately, it's barely visible, especially with a screen protector. I got my screen from Ebay seller MengtorUSA. The price was right, although it recently went up $10. It's marked with T-Mobile.

So, what has everyone done with the black tape around the display? Rip it out? Reuse?

Also, after replacing the digitizer, did it work perfectly? Minor issues? Something else?

I reused my black tape as much as I could but since my digitizer was not the.correct one I ordered a new one along with a bunch of 3m tape (2mm)

This time I sent a bunch of message to some eBay sellers to make sure I order the same original one, will post results as soon as I replace the digitizer

Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e with Beats Audio using XDA App

Had to replace mine twice, first replacement was laggy at first use. I reused the original tape. The problem was it started to gather dust. Much as i tried, the reused tape wasn't sealing the screen properly. When i bought the second digitizer, i got some 2mm wide 3M tape as well and i replaced completely the old one. I taped both the LCD and the side of the housing. No more dust now.

And yes, the second digitizer works perfectly, no lag or any other issues.

Thanks for the response. That was pretty much what I was hoping to hear. So, for the second time, you removed the black tape? It looks like the tape is in the shape on an L, with tape on the front and sides of the LCD. Did you cut the front part off, leaving the sides? Or did you pull the tape out?

Also, what did you do with the four buttons? Mine aren't working as well as before, almost the same as the screen. I taped around that strip, but not on it. I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

Ok, so I've gotten a little further with a possible software solution to the lagging lock screen problem. I'm pretty sure /sys/android_touch is created by the kernel. After looking at HTC's source (from htcdev.com), I found a section of touch screen code specific to touch screen manufacturers.

On looking at the vendor file in /sys/android_touch, I got this:

CY8CTMA340_x0008_30

The internets informed me that this a Cypress touch screen identifier, and the HTC source has code for Cypress TMA 300 touch screens. I have a theory that the problem is that my touch screen is a Cypress 340 screen. I'm getting a copy of the AOSP kernel source now to look for Cypress 340 code.

To follow up on this, I'd like to be sure my phone is reporting the id of the touch screen correctly. Does anyone else have this version of the screen working without the lag? With the lag?

Yes, I removed all existing black tape. Some of it was wrapped underneath the LCD and I had to cut it, some just peeled off. I left nothing on the sides, that's why i used some more of the new 3M tape on the sides as there was a bit of a gap between the digitizer and the frame that wasn't there before. I kept it low on the frame so it didn't go over the side of the digitizer once fitted.

The first time i opened the phone, i cut the ribbon with the 4 buttons and speaker  so i had to buy a new one... The original (as well as the top and bottom of the frame) was covered with some white tape so i bought some of that too on ebay (Item number: 250902454314). It's for iphone but looks exactly like the one on sensation. They gave me tons, i only used 2 small strips. Anyways, I put a bit of that underneath the speakers strip. Seems to be working fine now.

I bought one of the ask-tronics screens I thought you had posted a few pages back. Not Tmo branded though.

Going to attempt the repair myself after paying someone to do the first one.
I have so much dust under my first replaced screen its ridiculous.

Also, not sure if this has been posted but it helps me get my phone responding quicker...I found an app to remove the lock screen first.
If i hit the home screen buttom first it seems to be the most responsive, I swipe across the bottom 2-3 buttoms with my thumb pretty quick back and forth until the haptic feedback starts catching up/responding then the display will work as normal.

Got mine running yesterday with the HTC ask_tronics screen from ebay, all seems good so far. Although I can see light bleeding through the bottom of the screen under the black buttons.

I broke the Lcd during the repair, luckily I found one locally and got it working.

I bought a touchscreen/LCD combo from gadgettown on ebay and am experiencing these lag issues. Guess their bad to buy from also. Is there anyone selling the LCD digitizer combos that are actually Tmobile? I prefer to buy it this way since it's easier

Cheap asian digitizer

Does somebody have any idea why i'm experiencing serious unresponsiveness with my original cracked digitizer, after having installed and removed a cheap ebay digitizer?
Is the flex cable so fragile that i might have damaged it? or have i forgotten to put some insulating tape on the right parts?

this is killing me since i'm in doubt whether it was my handywork causing the cheap digitizer to be malfunctioning, or just the quality of the item

Finally!!

After having lived with the initial unresponsiveness for months I finally have a working phone! A new version of the android software became available today, and after upgrading, the screen works just fine! So there was a software solution to this after all. Perhaps HTC finally realised that many had this problem and looked into it.

So all who still struggle, try to upgrade to the latest sw version.
