How could you make that decision without actually using the Pixel 4 XL Face Unlock on a daily basis?

It is the future. Accept it or stay in denial like a lot of people did during removal of headphone jack
And what if I just want to see the notifications and don't want to unlock the phone? Do I need to gaze diagonally?

I decided to upgrade to the 17th. I actually think the screen is better than the pixel 4, better specs in really better in every way aside from camera

Don't they say that every year? LOL
They do, but in this case there really isn't a compelling reason to upgrade. Google really needs to get off their cloud however and either offer more than 128GB of storage for the Pixel 5, or else put in a MicroSD card slot. When minimum storage on an Apple product exceeds your maximum, that looks bad.

I'm all for the cloud but I agree 128GB should be the minimum at the point for it's price range. They're definitely not going to add an SD card slot after all these years of not having it. Also, Apple's minimum storage is 64GB too so it doesn't exceed the Pixel's maximum.

I must have misread the article I saw noting Apple's minimum storage being 256GB. Wouldn't be the first time either

What I do know is that unless something changes with the Pixel 5, my next device won't be a Pixel.

The 4 seems to pricy for what it is. It isn't the leap forwards I had hoped for, but the astrophotography mode tempted me until I looked at the price. I don't do the annual upgrade, I went from a nexus 5p to the 2xl and only because my 5p died, I'd like a bit if a generation jump in a device before I'm spending $1000+ on a phone (I'm in Australia)

Astrophotography mode or a good camera is not a good excuse (any more) to buy a pixel phone. Todays Huawei, Samsung and Apple's phones are equal or better than google in this department. You can use astrophotography mode in your pixel 2 with the latest Cstark27 modded camera apk. Just need a tripod with night mode and let it run for about 1 minute in order to take astrophotography pictures.

Yeah you can get it running but it's not the same quality. Even the Pixel 3 XL doesn't get the same quality.

Also, as it's been said many times, there's a lot more than that feature that makes it an upgrade over the Pixel 2 XL.
