Had yesterday's version installed and had positive results. My rooted stock rom Droid X, which I think is a great performer, seemed even more responsive with my chosen non-excluded apps killed with each refresh.

Updated just now to 0.8.3.1. On my phone governor choices are ondemand, userspace and performance. The frequency sliders are fixed.

I'll see how it performs for the next day or so. The widget looks nice and is useful and informative. Good job on a really neat app!

That was intended to be a test of the PM UI, its ability to maintain a sorted process list. I have more samples now and I'm seeing some consistency: with display on and PM up it uses 18-19%. In the background with display off I'm seeing 4-6%.

I'm also learning about my other apps :) It occurs to me that we might accumulate an interesting little database here in this forum of the performance of various popular apps on various handsets...

Enhancement request

I have an enhancement request and an idea about implementing it. You have on the main page four buttons and on the main menu four more buttons plus “settings”. I would like to be able to choose which four buttons I see on the main page. For example, I might choose “analyze”, “record”, and “show/hide system” in addition to the sort selector. Now the idea: put all eight buttons (excluding “settings”) in a scrollable panel and let the user specify their order. Then the menu button can open directly to the settings page, and I can choose which four buttons I see first :)

This is a remarkable app & so far it's replaced 2other apps for me. Just have 1small issue..the setting for the exclusion list &the widget keep reverting to the stock configuration at reboot instead of saving my preferences..is that a known bug? Didn't see anything in the thread

Usually when an app's settings don't "stick", clearing the cache/data via Application Management fixes it.
Nope, still lose all my presets for the program & widget at reboot. I'll contact the dev & update post with any other info.

Thanks trying it now...

Comment about text colors

When recording the process list text colors change from white/grey to cyan/purple (as when analyzing). But I am mostly recording, and I find the white/grey more readable. Perhaps a setting for this choice?

If you switch off the 'show graph while recording' option, it will revert back to standard color when recording. But not graph.

The colors are used to identify a specific task in the graph but actually when there are a lot (showing all system apps for example) it's not possible anyway.

Issue is noted, will see what I can do.

Good tip, thanks! That works for me.

Let me take the opportunity to thank you for your responsiveness and your willingness to hear suggestions. Not many apps are as well supported, not to mention well designed, as this one!

That's actually why I made it in the first place, tired of having 2, 3 or 4 icons and multiple apps on my home screen for system control!

App/thread is far too young to lists all possible issues... As mentioned clearing data usually does it... but recently I have seen an app I couldn't clear the data! I had to use a rooted explorer to go in /data/data and manually delete the app data myself!

Since I started dev on Android I noticed that the OS has a few bugs here and there which sometimes makes an app look bad and dev receive bad comments... though dev can't do anything about those particular bugs!

To name a few:
1- app data corrupted
2- no widget once app is installed!
3- app installation corrupted, probably the cause of item 2
4- app crashing after an update
5- logcat showing an app is constantly restarting due to a crash, whereas its the system which stopped it in the first place to save resources!

Good tip, thanks! That works for me.

Thanks! Users are like customers, they deserve the best customer service :)

Note that I put those suggestions in a todo/wish list and implement them when I have free time... And actually I will benefit from having a better app too, both as a user and a provider :D

Question about PM...

Hi everyone,

Please excuse my ignorance as I am new to the world of Android and mobile technology. I have recently purchased an EVO 4G and am running Mikfroyo 4.5. I have not made it my main device as I am still tweaking the phone in my free time (setting up email, customizing, ect). I have read enough to learn that there is a difference of how a Windows OS and Linux OS uses RAM, ect.

That's what brought me to this wonderfully designed Process Monitor (vs. a task killer)! Here is my stupid question:

If one does not use the Auto-kill feature, PM is not doing anything but monitoring, correct? In other words, PM is not doing anything to help the phone run more efficiently until ones activates Auto-kill settings???

That's what monitors do: they watch :D

But don't forget the handy dandy record feature.

Of course, you can use it to identify apps that use up more memory than they deserve or apps that behave badly.
It has helped me to decide on whether I should delete an app or not.
If an app is using too much cpu or ram than it's worth, then I get rid of it.

I think that this is the best process monitoring app I've ever tried with the added bonus of an awesome widget.

Zeppelinrox!

Thanks for being patient with me. I am starting to wrap my head around this.

Since I had never used a monitor like this that monitors CPU usage, when I saw the applications going to idle (0.0%), I was confused at first because I did not know if the OS or Process Monitor was putting the applications into an idle state. I figured PM was only monitoring what the OS was doing but I wanted to ask to be sure I was understanding that part.

I probably will not use the Auto-kill feature because with my luck I will kill apps that are needed or that will restart themselves anyway and then I might be in trouble and also use up more battery from them restarting themselves.

And I now understand the usefulness of the recording feature as well. I'll have to try that out.

Thank for your helpful response!

Suggestion for developer...

I haven't pressed it since, but the other day I accidentally touched the Kill All feature. I rebooted the phone because I was worried I would stop receiving emails and other important messages.

Would it make sense to add a confirmation to this feature?

Sorry for the late reply... You shouldn't worry about the kill all button being pressed accidentally!

It will not kill any excluded apps (all system apps are excluded by default)...

Even if an app like gmail is killed, it will automatically restart, so you will keep receiving you emails fine!

I usually include gmail, internet and a few other system apps in the auto-kill set to occur on screen-off (most useful), widget refresh (good to keep phone clean/fast) and sometimes during screen-on (less useful, but you start using phone clean).

This feature is useful to get rid of user apps, such as games that might be consuming CPU (or memory) while in the background...

NB: Including system app can be dangerous and can cause more arm than good... eg killing HTC Sense app will have Sense restart almost immediately and consume a huge amount of CPU/battery.

NB2: Just to insist that playing with exclusion list must be done very carefully when using the auto-kill features! Killing the wrong system process can cause problems...

Why don't processes add up to the 100% CPU?

Hi,

In the app, the top meter for CPU is showing 100% at the moment. However, the processes below, set to show CPU %, don't add up to anyhitng like 100. System is Included. So, what gives?

Thanks for the app,
The Captn

Hello Captn,

Indeed, did notice this occur when a kernel process (not actually shown) is going crazy. for example the other day I tried to root a Galaxy S with Z4Root, and all the sudden: 100%, but all apps are ok... had to reboot! Couldn't kill the faulty process!

I'm working on showing those processes, but it's impossible to kill any of them :(

EDIT:
Next update will have options to show/record kernel processes, though it should be used with caution as it consumes much more CPU!

For example, on a Desire HD ROM there are around 40 apps running and 100 kernel processes! So updating all data takes 3 times more CPU!
