Again, I do know that -- exactly why I said MiX's http server IS a web server, however simple. The question is why renaming index.html to test.html, test.html cannot be opened, but only downloaded.

Hence, back to my initial question, can it be fixed on MiX's side ? Any other local web server I run on the device works properly.
I'm not sure, so this is pure speculation, I think the http server is meant to be a file server made to share files on the same network, so every other file than index.html is handled as a download, .html or not. That would make sense IMHO.

I guess only @HootanParsa can shed some light on this. 🙂

I am trying to reproduce this but am not sure what steps you take to access the file. It would help to have a list of those specific steps you take to play the file in MiX Player. Also, knowing details about your device and android version and root status might be helpful.

FWIW, when I open the link to that file in a desktop web browser (FF on Win10) there is more lag when the file is first opening than typically occurs when viewing YouTube videos here. This is not a problem of its own but could be an indication that the issue is with the file itself or MiXplorer's handling of the file rather than your network speed.
Okay so i had tested this issue in every android device i own i have tested it in M21 Samsung(Android 11) , Note 5 pro (Android 9) , M31s (android 10), Mi Tv Stick all phone root status is unrooted and i have tested with video player like VLC, Mxplayer,Xplayer alll facing this issue.

Yesterday I had a problem with a cloud connected to Mix. I uploaded a movie to mega from my desktop PC to stream it using Mixplorer on my Xiaomi Mi 9T.
Oddly enough the movie wasn't visible when opening the cloud in Mixplorer but it was definitely there when using a browser to look into mega.nz.
Refreshing doesn't help so I decided to create a second login bookmark to the same mega account. It may have been enough to login/logout but I wanted to hold the old bookmark just in case there would be a problem creating the new one.
And voilà there was my movie.
Can someone tell me what happened there? Why was the content of the cloud not updated? Everything else was there, just the last uploaded avi file wasn't.

It sure works 100% as a WEB server, with an index.html file in a directory.
The exception does not prove the rule. If I won the lottery, it does not mean I know how and am able to win the lottery at will.

HTTP stands for Hyper TEXT transfer protocol. ie it transfers text. If you (as the developer) ask it to transfer a file, you have to assume there may be binary data within it, so it encodes the file, before sending the file to the client.

HTML (i.e. web pag) stands for Hyper TEXT Mark-up Language. It is therefore text and does not have to be encoded. i.e. its different to transporting a file over HTTP

If your CLIENT (eg web server) displays a file, that does not mean it was sent as a web page. Once you add the client, its another black box you don't understand the inner workings of, as to what it does with a file. Which is why I suggested you check the HTTP headers. And hence it may treat some files differently to others (as you have in your case). For example, when it downloads a file say called "index.html", that may trigger code that causes the browser to open it as a web page, NOT because the HTTP server sent it as a web page (HTML) It will be clarified in the headers. Also different web servers have different definitions of what you are assuming an index.html page is, and it can also be configured for that site, what the default web page is (so you dont have to explicitly nane it in the url eg http://www.servername.com as opposed to http://www.servername.com/default.php or possibly http://www.servername.com/index.html). There may even be server side code that explicitly sends index.html; as html/text, but that does not make it a web server

Files are assumed to be binary, and are sent encoded. Web pages are HTML/TEXT are not encoded. MiX send files not web pages.

Those are interesting data points but I was suggesting that you share a list of the specific steps you take when reproducing the issue. All the stuff you described is good to know (and actually supports the idea I have that there's something unique about that link) but in order for others to reproduce and test it they would need to know what steps you took eg how to reproduce it. For example: open X web page, click Y link, select open with, select such-and-such, Etc. Specific details.

I'd love to see a UI overhaul... Right now, it looks oldish. That's the only thing keeping me from switching from Solid Explorer to MiXplorer

Oldish is relative but that aside, do you have any constructive suggestions about what could be improved that has not or cannot be done with skins and themes? As for me, I would not switch apps from one that performs better (IMO), to another just because of the paint job.

Also, this reminds me of an old joke which is somewhat apropos. There are 2 barber shops on opposite ends of town, 1 where the barber looks tidy and the shop is clean including the floors, the other where the barber is unkempt and the shop is messy with hair everywhere. Where do you go? You go to the messy shop because that barber is getting their bad haircut at the other (tidy) barbershop and their own shop is messy because it's busy - where people prefer to go. :)

LOL, apart from straying off topic I now await the wrath of offended hairdressers and people with botched haircuts. :D

Good explanation. I actually get paid to teach this. ^_^ Also, vegemite is better than marmite, any day ! Calm down, it's not that important. It'd be an endless discussion, as an http server that serves a web page, is, by definition, a web server. And MiX's http server does this, given the proper conditions -- which you yourself have posted.

From About -> Open Source Libraries, it looks like Mixplorer uses nanoHTTPD.

nanoHTTPD bills itself as a "web server".

I haven't gotten deep enough to tell if the "user" (me, the owner of the filesystem) is expected to set up a configuration file like ".htaccess" or "httpd.config".

Good catch, I hadn't even looked at that. ( I was just checking if it was directly usable to open files from Firefox using a directory in the device because as I explained, they have removed both "file:///" and the Android intent to open local files with it. Sorry about the whole discussion getting out of control. )

... Sorry about the whole discussion getting out of control...
In my opinion nothing to be sorry about. Maybe, with a direct intervention by the developer, there would have been a quicker solution. But so, I've had the chance, to learn quite a bit about "the whole thing about http". I think that's interesting in general for everyone using a browser and in specific the ones using MiXplorer to transfer files. (And personally, I am also very interested in opening local html files after Firefox stopped showing them). Thanks to everyone contributing to this discussion!

At present the easiest and quickest way for me to do that is running :
    Code:
    python3 -m http.server 1234
... in terminal in a directory or root of sdcard and then opening http://localhost:1234 in Firefox. ( Works for all files in the directory; media files, text, html, images, etc. Anything Firefox can open. )

It'd be nice if MiX's implementation with nanohttpd allowed opening files, in this case downloading them is useless.

@Ultramanoid Who stopped supporting "file:///"? Firefox? Or Android?
Firefox for Android. They also removed the intent for Android so one could send files to Firefox, even for html files, Firefox won't appear as a suitable application to open them, it's ridiculous. Multiple issues and requests open on GitHub for over a year about this, they just ignore them.

Edit : Chromium / Chrome removed "file:///" access on Android too, but they're not insane like the folks at Mozilla. You can still send files to Chrom* browsers from a file manager like MiX to open them.

Edit 2 : Security yadda yadda. There's a sarcastic comment from someone at GitHub proposing Firefox stops opening websites too, as they can be malicious and do terrible things. They'll get there.

Edit 3 : I agree with DiamondJohn that MiX's implementation is probably meant essentially for file transfers, and from what I gather online, nanohttpd has little documentation, making it a little bit of a pain to customize for an Android application.

When building apps, a developer may use many different and seemingly unrelated components. The individual parts do not define what the final app is or does. Its how the developer pieces them together. I may use a web server component to build a game.

And to be clear, web server is a very generic term, the heart of the discussion is really if files downloaded from MiX's HTTP server, are served as web pages. And although I dont use the HTTP server in MiX myself, if I was a web developer (of static HTML pages) and I wanted to transfer these files using MiX as a FILE manager, I would not want them served as web pages. For that I would get a different app, a true web server coded to act as a web server and serve this pages to my client as web pages.

Multi select, three dots menu, open with, music player. Works for me.

      What music player?

I'm wondering if this could be an instance of Google's restriction that when handing a file off from one app to another it must be done in an isolated cache space. In some cases if the receiving app is not coded for it only the one file selected will be visible and the other files from the original folder will not be visible because they are not in the isolated cache. Most likely @marciozomb13 is using MiX media player which would not have this problem but as you mentioned using a third-party player, knowing what that player is maybe more meaningful.

Nope, it only play's the first track it won't open the rest!

Thanks for this amazing app, can you add a option to open with multiple files with a external app, for example a folder with multiple music files to open with a music player etc.

Well, DiamondJohn has a point, in that eventually we all have to move on. But no need to go to extremes and kill everything that is not the latest and greatest, I think. Anyway, up to Hootan.

( Says the one who runs unstable nightlies, not even alphas, of most software ... )

Pffffft, I'm 60 years old and would probably not have an issue keeping my OP7 and staying on OOS10 for the rest of my life :D

I'm skipping OOS11 for sure, I even disabled the updater app through TiBu so it can't annoy me. I might consider OOS12, depending on what else Google f*cks up ... or I'll just stay on 10 indefinitely. The only thing missing would be security patches and if you use common sense, don't click on everything that jiggles or meows and don't install apps from shady sites you can still live a long and happy life without those silly patches.

As long as Hootan still supports older Android versions I'll be golden 🤞 :)

      MOD ACTION:

      Thread cleaned.

Guys, please interact in a cool and calm manner. There is no need for off topic posts even if the OP allows it. Especially if such posts lead to harsh words. The world is already in turmoil, let us not add our bit to it.

      Stay safe! Thank you.

I haven't tested how far I can push it, but instead of issuing scan all media/media mounted intent, I have programmatically built a list of files myself, and then explicitly told the media scanner to scan each specific file in my list. It was pretty quick in updating the media db.
The main problem is the media files. If I copy my 250 thousands music, images, videos in my device, then it's going to scan the content of those files to retrieve the metadata. They have done a great job in the recent versions of Android by improving the media retriever performance. It can extract the metadata from almost 8 files for 1 second, in my fastest device. It is incredibly fast but I have to wait many hours for scanner to finish the job to just get the basic info about my files. What if I rename one of my root folders during that time? All again. It's a joke. The whole design and the way it is working and updating is bad and even dangerous. In some cases it's possible you even lose many of your files during updating the media db. There are many problems which I'm lazy to explain. They could scan the whole files only for the basic info, in one thread, for a very short time and then whatever they need to do in different threads later. They could make it very fast, smart, efficient and useful but they didn't.
What I wrote is based on my testings and experience on my Android devices. Maybe I'm wrong!

The new builds are uploaded. If there are new problems specially with the servers, please let me know. Thank you.

Thanks for the log but please don't remove the startup info, the next time.
It says the file is moved (from MiX cache folder) but the target file doesn't exist. Then it tries to copy but the source is moved and probably it gets deleted. There should be a delay. I will add some codes to check it multiple times. Try the next update and tell me the result. Thank you.
@iWARR You can write how many posts you want even off-topic. I've never called moderators. But you should know I've waited for some days and published many builds and still didn't get any test result. Just wanted to let you know that I have to close the case and remove the changes. Thanks for the advices anyway.
