Dear MiXplorer Support Team,

I am reaching out to inform you about a problem I have recently encountered with the MiXplorer application.

I am using a Huawei mobile device with Android version 9, which comes with an antivirus system based on Avast technology. During a security scan, the antivirus detected the presence of malware in MiXplorer and recommended that I uninstall the application immediately.

It is important to note that I am using the latest version of MiXplorer, which I downloaded from the official link on Google Drive provided in this same forum.

I have been greatly surprised by this malware detection, as I have been using MiXplorer for a long time without facing any similar problems or incidents.

I would like to request your assistance in clarifying this situation. Could you please confirm if there have been any modifications or updates to MiXplorer that could have caused this malware detection? I am also interested to know if there are any recommended measures to properly address this situation.

It is probably a false positive detection. Occasionally such things do happen with android antivirus utilities, and sometimes even when Google changes the type of notifications which it requires from the apps there may be Google warnings but IIRC there has never been an actual infection related to MiXplorer. If you are interested in getting more information you could try to find out specifically what it is that avast thinks is the problem or you could reported to them as a false positive but IMO it's not even worth chasing that - to the point previously made about avast's fall from grace.

I noticed something weird which started with one of the latest version of the app.

I get tons of .recycle (1...X) folders. Sometimes up to 32 folders besides the regular . recycle folder.

Any idea what that is?

Avast has been effective for me on PCs especially where something free and quick is desired but they have always had manipulative practices, effectively undermining their own security with excessive promotional and other notices. To my surprise, recently when I contacted their support the representative admitted that avast would emit similar notices even in the paid version. Now I'm using bitdefender on PCs... but still wondering how viable most Adroid based AV apps are.

Also, with two people who are familiar with MiXplorer and experiencing the same thing so suddenly a log might help determine what is the common cause or factor, as might knowing the details of the devices.

I have been using Mixplorer for many years. I have the silver version installed that i download from google play store. Google play store now have a feature called Play Protect that scans regularly all the installed apps to search for malicious applications. Never been warned about Mixplorer. Anyway there are many online antivirus services. You can upload there the Mixplore apk version you have installed to check if these services also find malware...

Now I"m using bitdefneder on PCs... but still wondering how viable most Adroid based AV apps are.

Personally, I have been using a combination of the free Sophos Intercept X and Sophos Security & Antivirus Guard on Android for quite a while with little issue (other than the occasional PUA ).

I have performed a scan of the MiXplorer APK file using VirusTotal, and the results are consistent with your indications. Avast-Mobile is the only antivirus that detects MiXplorer as malware. So everything would indicate that it is a false positive.

The antivirus came by default as part of Huawei Optimizer. I'm going to report it to Avast anyway, telling them it's a false positive.

I think i found the solution.
I deleted all the recycle folders, including the original one without any number.

A new one was created after deleting my first file but i haven't seen the creation of any new numbered recycle folders.

I hope that fixes it.

Forehead slap! Disabling the undo and recycle features and deleting the recycle folders as you did is a better starting point for diagnostics then comparing the timestamps which might be more useful if it occurs again.

LOL, I've got no love for play protect, but even though it may occasionally needlessly filter good apps it does offer a layer of protection for some people. That being said, there have been one or two instances where MiXplorer triggered Google's play protect warning but of course HootanParsa explained and addressed those things quickly, and the underlying issues were administrative and had nothing to do with any vulnerabilities in MiXplorer.

If you get any helpful use of avast on the device there may be no need to get rid of it, just keep in mind that false positives might occur, as they might with any security product (to varying degree). Another factor in determining whether something is safe, especially with Android apps, is to see how many people use it and how many and what types of complaints there are about it.

I think i was to quick. Now i have 30 recycle folders again and i don't think i even deleted any files in the meantime. When i did earlier for testing, everything showed up within the normal recycle folder. All of the 30 folders were created within 3 minutes and are all empty.

Update:

It seems like the folders get created when i use the copy to function in the share menu and copy files to my Dropbox. Have to further investigate if other cloud storage is affected as well.

Even though I have Play Protect disabled, I am regularly prompted to turn it on for my own protection, PARTICULARLY when installing apps outside the Play Store (WHICH IT HAS NO BUSINESS EVEN MONITORING WHEN DISABLED! )

So you are using a Chinese device that is preloaded with malware and spying and sending data to Chinese data miners, but you get a malware detected on mixplorer app and you are worried? That is just hilarious. I bet you use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and believe those are all safe to use while also sharing your exact location status...

I'd worry more about using a Huawei device, come to that.

"Antivirus" will flag things like having "improper" storage access as "infected" ..

Unless you see news everywhere from multiple sources stating an application that's been used by hordes of people for many, many years, is now harmful, ignore it.

Don't use anything with trackers or malvertising instead, which is very likely the bulk of your software, if you want to be safe.
