Looks very interesting and flexible, I was looking for for an alternative to the standard auto brightness feature.
Just installed it and will give it a spin. I will report back when I have some hands on experience.

Also very interested to see what the effect will be on battery life.

EDIT: First impression is great, the light level adapts very fast to changing conditions, and very easy to customise.
This looks like a great app.

Thank you for that GREAT tool.

Testing on an HTC Rezound, so far so good, detects light sensor and proximity just fine.

I'll let you know if I find any problems.

Thanks for the app!

If i read tech specs correctly, xperia s doesn't have a brightness sensor. Considering other specs of this phone, i find this odd. However, the program will detect a brightness sensor if there is one implemented...

Works on GS2 and so far its Amazing. Good job.

Its like screen filter on steroids :)

Edit: But it also have the problem that the Install button cant be pressed, like with screenfilter, when the app is on.
Just putting this here maybe some1 would face the same problem and go nuts.

Hi thanks for this app as it is a good idea but Once activated I could not install any apps from sd card. Even after De activating it would not let me install app. So I had to freeze the app completely with titanium then I could install apps.

Hopefully u can fix this bug. :)

    Hello @velis74

I hope all are fine at your home again :)

I`m looking for a brightness app since long that will work with automotive Android headunits for long time.
since they don`t have a brightness sensor and no camera, i was hoping that your app will help there.
I saw that it has listed support for cameras :)
I tried it on my pixel 2 , but it i do not see any camera option ? is this a feature that will be implemented in the future ?
If yes, it would be cool to have an option to choose which camera to choose, it would be awsome if it would be possible to just attach some Android compatible usb webcam to use this as brightness sensor.

    sincerely Kri
Hi Kri, I have only the old version installed at the moment and in this version you can enable camera support if you tap and hold current proximity reading value, as in the screenshot attached. Then you will get more options in the settings screen. I don't know if this will work for you, but you can try it until you get the correct answer from velis74.

I AM intrigued though: how did you end up with an Android device that doesn't have its own cameras and you are using USB ones? I mean, I work with such devices at my day job, so I know they are there, but for professional use, not off-the-shelf consumer devices.

The answer is easy, it is not a Mobile device, it is an Android Headunit for a car :D
If you google for "BMW Snapdragon 625 Headunit" you will find those devices ;)

Those headunits don`t have a built in brightness sensor for the display, which is a real issue at night :(
At the moment i have cf.lumen installed, but this does only change brightness by time and only when i open the app, not automatically at background.

I bought a cheap inspection camera just for the specific test to use it as brightness sensor, nothing else :D

    Kri

Thanks for that information, that helped me :)
For what i see the app is hard coded to front/back camera of the android device, no additional camera selection is possible.

I already started searching for a camera and also bought one cheap for test.
It seems that all that usb plugin cameras do rely on UVC not the camera2api :/
Most sellers do advertise to install USB Camera App from ShenYoa from Playstore.

It would be awsome if it would be possible to add usb cameras as brighness sensor to the app :)

    Kri
Agree that this might be awesome. I have recorded the request in the backlog, but TBH, priority is below sea-level. With current pace of development, this will not be supported for a long time.
    1
I understand that this is a very low priority, anyways thanks for the open answer :)

    Sincerely Kri

Thread reopened per moderator decision. Some of you already know there's a dispute with Lux auto brightness author regarding app description text. I have removed it in entirety to remove any ambiguity. Text on play store is in its 3rd revision which was written entirely from scratch. In my opinion it bears absolutely no resemblance to lux description.

Please do not comment on this in your further posts. The thread should remain on-topic.
If you still feel you have to say something about it, please PM me or the mod about it.

In the mean time I have released v 1.10.32

No more of no sensor reading (found out why service was crashing)

I have however detected an issue when the device is in a constant light conditions (night). Although I have the sensor reading, the graph still drops to 0 and minimizes the brightness.
Direct solution is to attempt to modify the graph and then cancel the operation. This will restore the brightness to the graph setting.

    Edit: fixed

Edit: TO DO list updated and rearranged. Top items have high priority.

Thanks for all the support so far, everyone. I never hoped for such a positive feedback.

I think I found the cause of sensor readings getting stuck: it happens when you turn on the screen while proximity sensor is covered (active). The app then ignores the subsequent sensor readings because of proximity and when proximity is finally released, lack of further light events "causes" the app to not update the brightness according to most recent light reading. Of course, this mostly ever happens while in a dark room - that's when light events are very rare because the sensor just doesn't detect any changes in light.

I have added an auto-generated event to occur just after the proximity sensor should release so that the brightness will then be updated. In my testing, I cannot reproduce the problem any more.

I will upload the new apk to OP now and later today to the market. I just want to test a bit more because this isn't the only change I've done.
    10
One of the best apps that I have used offlate. I am just addicted to it now. The development certainly needs to continue and if possible the future updates could add profile export ans restore feature. No need for frequent updates, as it is almost bug free now. Would just wish for Android 10 support.

Yeah, decided to give it anbother go. Not sure when I will find the time, though. Need to fix wizard which took some damage when I was doing support for the new Androids. Hopefully there will be something before THIS new year.

Sorry for no activity guys, I get so little comp time lately :(
I have however managed to make some progress and have updated first post with a new version that has the following new additions:

    • Service will stop after a minute if auto brightness is disabled
    • Support for proprietary sensor solutions on Sony Xperia, SGS2
    • Updated translations: german, persian

This is not yet a release since I'd like to do two more things before I do that:
    1. Try to fix the graph freeze
    2. Create a first-start settings wizard

In order to do the first, this version (in the first post, not the market) contains some logging enhancements. I would ask someone with the problem to please drop me a mail with logcat @ level 9 (long press the proximity sensor reading values to set the level). All I need is a few seconds @ level 9 when the graph is not responding to light changes.

The second item will be a series of 4 - 5 dialogs asking the user about his basic preferences. I will make it so that even existing users will have the option of running this dialog.

Of course, I'm also interested in Xperia sensor support if any Xperia users are still following the thread. Maybe for the support to work correctly, apps like this will need to be active. The app should work even without that, but there may be some strange results because OS and app will fight for their brightness. Don't know what the OS does if an app sets its own brightness.

@shadowch: The baby is great, we're having so much fun. We already managed to get her to sleep during the nights (that's why I have no more comp time :D ) We're all going for a walk to lake Bled today.
