Haven't switched yet but any chance the kernel keeps this from working? The rom I could not get it to work on is a different kernel

Try downloading the files again. The names are the same but I change the files a couple of days ago. The previous files had problems with the permission but it's fixed now as far as I know

Those are the ones I tried but will give it another go.

Edit: tried both zip and apk again with different kernel as well and still no go.

Just flashed it on slimkat as well with no issues so it must be something missing in the stock rom.

i actually have omnirom installed, so was expecting omnirom to work, but I keep getting an error when try to start t

Omniswitch start failed
Failed to gain system permissions

The app is under /system/priv-app with permissions -rw-r--r-- & owned by root:root

I have tried flushing data from this app, but it made no difference. I did at one point have omniswitch working, but have gone through many rom updates since then (mostly with opendelta)

Any ideas?

** Update -- renaming the old apk in /system/priv-app and rebooting didn't help. However I then used the zip and omniswitch is now working. Very odd that the omniswitch included in omnirom was failing for me. Perhaps there's a bad version in the omnirom build currently.

You should be able to get OmniSwitch using open delta or flashing a newer version of the ROM

Works fine on Nexus 5 with SlimKat.

Cannot figure out how to open recent apps from navigation bar (or from shortcut) instead of swiping.

replace standard recent apps list

In the OmniSwitch February announcement on the OmniROM blog, the following was written:
A few of the things that are already on the TODO list are:
  • allow using as a replacement of the AOSP recents view
Any idea when this is coming? I like how OmniSwitch works, but I do not like the side-sweep activation; it would be awesome if we could use the standard recent apps button to view OmniSwitch

I can't find a way to do use it as the default recents app, unless if you remap your keys. I have no idea when a feature do do this will be added.

Does this work with beanstalk ROM? And can you close apps ?

It should work. You can swipe a app icon up/down to close it
