@jmh2002 @deechte there is a new behavior option to auto close conversations on marking a message in a conversation read. Please let me know if this was what you were looking for.
I don't see it yet, maybe because I'm not on the beta channel. Based on your description though, I don't think it is what we meant. It's not about marking read, it's about marking unread. Let me clarify.

I've set the general setting to show messages in conversations to off, cause I prefer a chronological inbox over grouped messages. Now, when I open a single message, it opens fine. When I then choose to mark it unread from the menu within the message, it directly turns to a conversation view with just that one message (marked unread). I chose to not use conversations, that's why it's unexpected. It's also useless to show a conversation with one message. And it then requires and extra tap to get back to the inbox. The desired action in this case, if you ask me, is to return directly to the inbox and mark the message unread, upon tapping "mark as unread".

Hope this helps.

It should be unread (so, typo).

You should be able to install the GitHub version as an update over your current version:

Hi, ok, didn't know that.
Yes, with the latest release and the proper setting this bevaviour is as desired. Thank you! I do think though, that the general conversations on/off setting should take care of it as well.
For @jmh2002 : the option is on the "behavior" tab.

THANKS, that fixed some unexplained issues after I made a lot of changes to my setup.

Version 1.1667 is available on GitHub now and in the Play store test program after Google's approval.

Thank you for reconsidering this request :) Yes it is what I was looking for, however currently it functions for all Conversations, whereas I think it should only function if there is only 1 Message in a Conversation.

Otherwise it causes navigation to jump back to the Conversation List when there may still be unread Messages in a Conversation.

THANKS again.

This was the whole reason it worked as it did ...

If you use the original message view, a message will be shown as-is with an embedded browser tab page. Most browsers won't auto link plain text, like FairEmail does in the reformatted message view.

Ah, ok. I didn't understand that it was plain text formatting that was causing these issues as I hadn't noticed this in gmail before. But I checked and these emails are indeed plain text.

Would it instead be possible to set FairEmail to use Orginal Message View for some sender domains, and Reformatted Message View for others?

Folders can't be shown conditionally in the navigation menu. I think this won't be genrally useful and I am afraid that it will lead to additional support questions like "where is my folder?", so I don't think it is good idea to add this.

Ok that's a pity, I use this feature all the time in gmail because I have a lot of Folders and it's convenient 'at a glance' to only see the ones with unread messages (ie: the ones that need attention).

But if it's technically impossible to show them conditionally in the Navigation Menu, then as a work around I have trialled setting General > Show On Start Screen > to Primary Account Folders instead

This helps, because FairEmail then moves all the Folders that are being sync'd to the top of the Folder List.

Would it then be possible to conditionally show the Folders with Unread Messages first, at the top of the Sync'd part of the Folder List?

That seems like it would make sense, if it is technically possible.

THANKS :)

Ok, I guess I've just generally experienced that Marking Unread navigates back to the Conversations List when there is only one Message in a Conversation.

That's the distinction that I'm trying to make - conditional on when there is only 1 message.

But I can click Back 1 more time instead :)
This will be in the next release (likely today):

Please use 'Report issue' in the navigation menu if you encounter any issue. If nobody reports an issue and I don't see it myself, it won't be resolved ...

You can use "Don't ask again" when switching to the original message view and this will become the default for the sender or sender domain of the message.

I will give the folder order in relation to unread messages some more thought, but I won't change this in the next release, which is a release candidate for the next Play store release.

Thank you for the attention to all matters Marcel, it's most appreciated. I don't always have time to report issues immediately, but I do make a list, check them, and then come back to you when I can :)

You can use "Don't ask again" when switching to the original message view and this will become the default for the sender or sender domain of the message.

I'm not very familiar with the 'Dont Ask Again' feature. Since my default setting is 'Show Reformatted Messages By Default' set to Disabled, is there also a:

"Don't ask again when switching to the Reformatted Message View" too? (otherwise I'm going to have A LOT of domains to set manually to Original Message View, ie: all of them in general, except a few troublesome plain text ones).

I will give the folder order in relation to unread messages some more thought, but I won't change this in the next release, which is a release candidate for the next Play store release.

I understand, I appreciate you considering the request. I certainly don't need it changed/fixed immediately. I'll wait because I'm sure you will come up with a good way to manage this situation.

THANKS again :)

You can't have "all" and "some" together, so if you want to choose which senders/domain you want the original message view for, you'll need to enable the safer reformatted message view again.

Understood. I guess I will need to give that some more thought, since my case seems to be the opposite of that - 99% of my domains should be set to Original Message Format so that will entail a lot of manual work.

So far I only have this plain text url hyperlink issue with a few domains, but they are forum notifications so it is a lot of messages every day.

From a privacy perspective, which is the main goal of this app, the default for this setting is fine.

@jmh2002 marking a single message unread will result in closing the "conversation" always now (independent of settings).

What's also changed is that in case of multiple messages, there will be a scroll to the message marked unread.

I have even plans for it. More on this later.

Granted side effects from medication for my disability have messed badly with my memory, but I don't remember ANY of the first time use stuff in that review when I downloaded FairEmail from Google Play Store at all. Detecting my accounts and choosing which to use for my FairEmail account? Giving phone numbers? I don't recall any of that business at all. And what's this 'It is not an email platform meant to replace Gmail. Instead, it is an extension of your Google account that is designed to make your email more private'? I got it because it is an email client to 'replace' GMail ... well actually to replace another email client because I'd never ever use GMail in the first place so need to replace it. It works as a client for a GMail email account, but that's not what that part said. All in all I felt I was reading a review of a completely different app.

Confirming msg receipt by a link. So many times I wish I knew if the recipient of my emails had received it. Even though I ask for delivery/ read receipts I rarely get one. I understand that privacy is a concern here but it would be nice to know if someone got/ read your email.
Why would someone click a link as a read receipt when they can send the built-in read receipt with the same effort (usually just one click)?

And I thought I was using some different app after being a FairEmail user since Dec 2018🤣
You are using the real thing!

Unfortunately, the domain name faircode.net is already taken, else I had reserved it to prevent misusage.

We did a short review of the FairEmail app - I hope you will like it. Supporting the open-source...our website is still a work in progress.
This is the weirdest review I have read in my life. Maybe the writer tested several apps at the same time and got confused.

Seems like I've found another site that I don't need to bookmark.

Stopping with improvements wouldn't be fair to the people appreciating my effort, so I will keep improving the GitHub version and reduce the Play store updates to once a month.
    16
Since it happened too many times to me that I answered a message while a new message arrived making the answer less useful, the next version will show a bottom notification when a new message arrives in the same thread as you are composing a message for. Tapping on 'Show' will open the conversation, so you can quickly check the new message.

It is time for a new, modern, open source, privacy friendly email client for Android.

I have just released a first alpha version for feedback on the design and features.

    Not for production use yet!

Most of the stuff basically works, but be prepared for crashes and error notifications.

Safe email is a working name, but it is for several reasons not a convenient name, so suggestions for a name are welcome.

I have just released alpha version 0.15

    Changelog/download:

With a bit of luck the next version can be a beta version.

I am putting a lot of effort into this project, so thanks are appreciated.

I have just released alpha version 0.10

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/open-source-email/releases

I have put many hours into developing and debugging this release, so thanks are appreciated.

This version is still not suitable for production, but all basic functions are present now. The goal is now to stabilize this version into a first beta release, so please let me hear what problems you have.

Edit: due to database changes you'll need to setup your accounts/identities again.

I have just released beta version 1.745

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/releases

The changelog might seem uninteresting, but in fact displaying messages has been rewritten to introduce inline displaying of original messages. I spent about two days developing and testing this, so at least a "thanks" will be appreciated.

Some background: normally the web view cannot be used in a scrolling list (of messages in a conversation) and although there exist several workarounds for this, none were satisfactory. However, I had a completely novel idea (as far as I know) about how to approach this without the usual edge cases (hopefully) !

To do: investigate if using a dark background is feasible (setting the background dark is simple, but the challenge is to modify the message so that everything is still readable). I will consider to add an option to always display original messages.

Please report any problem you discover, so it can be fixed.
