I don't expect everybody to be computer expert. What is frustrating is that people don't ask for help and just run for the 1 star button.

It's a sad reflection of the way so many now want and expect instant gratification and don't feel they should have to put any effort into anything, coupled with the vast number of apps presented - most of them junk or clones - for any search for anything in the store, and the ease and speed with which people can add or remove apps. Then add to that the social media obsessions with instantly reacting to things with likes, thumbs up and downs, and this is what we get. Let's try this one ... ooh, I don't understand that instantly so one star, uninstall, install the next, repeat. Whereas I don't do any of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, 'likes' etc at all, and know enough about things like emails, POP3, IMAP, SMTP etc, if I install an email program or app and it doesn't appear to have things to dig into and learn, lots of settings to explore and configure, I immediately know it;'s not going to be good enough for my needs. Then again, I spent my evenings in the late 90s helping other users of a minority OS (Acorn's RiscOS) that the main ISPs couldn't provide support for get their internet connections up and email (and newsgroup software - we were big on newsgroups back then) applications working. Spent quite a lot of time telneting to ISP mail and newsgroup servers and conducting mail and news sessions by hand, typing the commands and looking at the replies to find out why the applications for our OS weren't wworking with whichever ISP, and even querying the mail servers for their settings and jumping through hoops to 'escalate' the problem high enough past the customer service drones with zero tech knowledge to the actual engineers to let them know the servers were configured incorrectly. So ... I'm not exactly an average email app user.

But frankly the 1 star 'it don't work' review idiots are people who do not need and frankly can't cope with an app as fully featured and configurable as FairEmail anyway. It's just a pity that their reflexively trained instinct to 'thumbs down' from social media means they can't help star rating on their way out rather than leaving quietly.

Suggestion: dynamic auth error Messages instead of statically implemented ones. See

So instead of the fixed condition throwing an exception, you could read a file from your GitHub repo containing an up to date list in case of some error and then dynamically throw the corresponding error.

Upside: you can dynamically set a touple of provider and error. It does not require an app-update to display an error message or to get rid of an out of date error message.

The idea is good, but Google will remove the app from the Play store for this.

Hi, how does the "auto optimize" option in receive settings work? I expect it to keep account always in sync on work hours, and maybe switch to 15 minuts on off hours, but it's not actually working like this.

I like to know if saved searches are useful to you and how you use them. I will extend the FAQ about searching later today and some real life examples might be useful.

Hi Marcel, I did a search by activating the checkbox starred (as you advised me). But the checkbox is ignored at all.
The shortcut (clicking on the star) is working perfectly. Could you please double check the code?

My guess is that you are using the search index. Please read the text below the on/off switch for searching via the search index.

The next version will visually clarify this by low lighting the server-only options.

If you are adventurous, you could install version 1.1739d.

This version adds importing vCards into the local contacts database (send options, manage, three-dots overflow menu) and is supposed to reduce working memory usage. Please be aware that this version might crash. In this case you can install the "regular" version 1.1739 as an update again.

I forgot to update the "letter" version (which is new BTW). Next time ...

Just use the app and report any problem you encounter as usual.

fairemail.net is registered by me now.

I have even plans for it. More on this later.

Confirming msg receipt by a link. So many times I wish I knew if the recipient of my emails had received it. Even though I ask for delivery/ read receipts I rarely get one. I understand that privacy is a concern here but it would be nice to know if someone got/ read your email.
Why would someone click a link as a read receipt when they can send the built-in read receipt with the same effort (usually just one click)?

This would also require Marcel to stop sleeping😄. He is already at it 7 days a week with only a few hours of closed eye!
I sleep every night 8-9 hours like a baby, so no worries about me.

Because many people use their webmail that very often doesn't handle receive/read receipt.
And I think that this action must be automatically done when the user opens the mail without asking him to manually click on any link/button.
So I think too that it would be a great thing.

There should be a basic web page for most people here now:

Edit: @mobification maybe the "review" will result in something nice, who knows.

Stopping with improvements wouldn't be fair to the people appreciating my effort, so I will keep improving the GitHub version and reduce the Play store updates to once a month.

Since it happened too many times to me that I answered a message while a new message arrived making the answer less useful, the next version will show a bottom notification when a new message arrives in the same thread as you are composing a message for. Tapping on 'Show' will open the conversation, so you can quickly check the new message.

It is time for a new, modern, open source, privacy friendly email client for Android.

I have just released a first alpha version for feedback on the design and features.

    Not for production use yet!

Most of the stuff basically works, but be prepared for crashes and error notifications.

Safe email is a working name, but it is for several reasons not a convenient name, so suggestions for a name are welcome.

With a bit of luck the next version can be a beta version.

I am putting a lot of effort into this project, so thanks are appreciated.

I have just released alpha version 0.10

    https://github.com/M66B/open-source-email/releases

I have put many hours into developing and debugging this release, so thanks are appreciated.

This version is still not suitable for production, but all basic functions are present now. The goal is now to stabilize this version into a first beta release, so please let me hear what problems you have.

Edit: due to database changes you'll need to setup your accounts/identities again.

I have just released beta version 1.745

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/releases

The changelog might seem uninteresting, but in fact displaying messages has been rewritten to introduce inline displaying of original messages. I spent about two days developing and testing this, so at least a "thanks" will be appreciated.

Some background: normally the web view cannot be used in a scrolling list (of messages in a conversation) and although there exist several workarounds for this, none were satisfactory. However, I had a completely novel idea (as far as I know) about how to approach this without the usual edge cases (hopefully) !

To do: investigate if using a dark background is feasible (setting the background dark is simple, but the challenge is to modify the message so that everything is still readable). I will consider to add an option to always display original messages.

Please report any problem you discover, so it can be fixed.
