I think this is pretty insulting, also for the people who put effort into translating the app

Google says this review is not violating the Play store policies. WTF.

I am a native speaker, and I have no clue what he's trying to say. 🤷‍♀️

I already bought premium a second time, so I'm well prepared for you pulling the app from play store 😊

Looks like someone posted 2 spam posts with sporting stuff. By the time I could click report on either, XDA just said I broke the matrix. They're already deleted.

@M66B had already said several times in the past that there would be too few users under GitHub/F-Droid for whom it would be worthwhile to continue the project.
Yes, this is true. Play Store gives visibility to this app that it wouldn't otherwise get without it.

If you want to play ball in Google's stadium, gotta follow their rules, regardless of whether you agree with them or not, and regardless of whether their policies are illogical or not. The problem with Google is that they have become so powerful that they can essentially dictate policies, with very little power on the part of devs/users to do anything about it if they disagree. I believe it's not a good thing for any corporate entity to wield too much control. The power goes to their heads.

In the end they are a business, with their profits being the most important thing to them...not users, and not devs. To that end, they collect mountains of data about us, then use it to try to sell to us. I guess it's all just a matter of how much influence we are willing to give them in our lives. Don't ever think they're the benevolent good guys, they aren't. The "do no evil" motto went out the door long ago.

Others may choose to go along with whatever they say, but I personally make it a point to only make limited use of their services, avoiding them if there are better alts. And to not give them more data if it's not necessary.

Since Android's sqlite version is being used now, the app had to switch back to FTS4. One of the problems with that is that the Unicode61 tokenizer appears to be not available on some devices, even thought it should be there.

This test version will use the ICU break iterator to work around this problem:

https://bitbucket.org/M66B/fairemail-test/downloads/FairEmail-v1.1972b-github-preview-release.apk

A benefit is that, for example, Chinese texts will be broken down into works correctly.

I would like to hear if searching on the device with and without the search index enabled still works as expected.

Android 10
Without search index a result list is displayed below the input field.

With activated search index the result list is not displayed.

Is the index file deleted again at some point? I had activated the search index 2x, this has doubled the file size.

With the search index (wait until it is built again if you enabled it again), indexed words will be suggested.
Without the search index, subject and email addresses will be suggested.
Is that what you are seeing?

The search index is reset on disabling search indexing.

Sorry, I had not used the search before.

You are right, without the search index, subject and email addresses are suggested.

With search index a much more complex result set is produced. I randomly checked the results and it looks good.

That's a really nice feature! I'm using their browser add-on since a few months, and it's very helpful. Thanks!
The preview version also has a new option for a custom server URI, so you can run your own server, for example with Docker:

This way people dealing with sensitive messages can use LanguageTool too.

Unclear, unwelcoming, bad app. - 1 star
Today was more demotivating than ever and this is just an example of one of the too many disappointing reviews of today. I am asking myself right now why I did start this project anyway.

There was today also a guy leaving a not so favorable review, despite having added a series of new features for him. In any case, I have learned that I shouldn't put too much effort into new features anymore.

And more 1-star reviews, dragging the average rating down even more. The incentive to work on this app is slowly and steadily vaporizing.

I will keep maintaining the app, but I am going to reduce the time I am putting into support. It seems to be mostly wasted time anyway.

How was the call with Google today, Marcel?

Google was pretty friendly and cooperative and told me the favicons are indeed the problem, and it can/should be fixed by updating in the privacy policy to "disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data":

    Privacy Policy

All apps must post a privacy policy in both the designated field in Play Console and within the app itself. The privacy policy must, together with any in-app disclosures, comprehensively disclose how your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares user data, not limited by the data disclosed in the Data Safety section. This must include:
    • developer information and a privacy point of contact or a mechanism to submit inquiries
    • disclosing the types of personal and sensitive user data your app accesses, collects, uses, and shares; and any parties with which any personal or sensitive user data is shared
    • secure data handling procedures for personal and sensitive user data
    • the developer’s data retention and deletion policy
    • clear labeling as a privacy policy (e.g., listed as “privacy policy” in title)
The entity (e.g., developer, company) named in the app’s Google Play listing must appear in the privacy policy or the app must be named in the privacy policy. Apps that do not access any personal and sensitive user data must still submit a privacy policy.

Please make sure your privacy policy is available on an active URL (no PDFs) and is non-editable.

So, I have updated the privacy policy and added this new table:

    https://github.com/M66B/FairEmail/blob/master/PRIVACY.md#summary-of-shared-data

I am not sure if it covers everything, so feedback is more than welcome. @mkasimd maybe you can take a look?

Note that I have also enabled BIMI, Gravatars, Libravatars and favicons for the Play store version again.

The short term goal is to release a Play store test version (and associated GitHub version) and to get the update approved. I will think about the next steps after this has been accomplished. Given the huge number of supportive messages I received (much appreciated!) the project will be continued in some form in any case.

Version 1.1900 is available on GitHub now and in the Play store test program after Google's approval (which is the main goal of this release).

It is time for a new, modern, open source, privacy friendly email client for Android.

I have just released a first alpha version for feedback on the design and features.

    Not for production use yet!

Most of the stuff basically works, but be prepared for crashes and error notifications.

Safe email is a working name, but it is for several reasons not a convenient name, so suggestions for a name are welcome.

I have just released alpha version 0.15

    Changelog/download:
    https://github.com/M66B/open-source-email/releases

With a bit of luck the next version can be a beta version.

I am putting a lot of effort into this project, so thanks are appreciated.
