[APP] FM Radio for the Droid 2!!

Everyone asking about Droid 1/Milestone support doesn't seem to get it.

Your phone does not have the actual FM Radio chip inside the phone. Now, if you can find a chip, open your phone, and find some weird way to solder it in there (yeah, right), maybe it'd work (not likely).

The physical crud isn't in there to receive FM signals.

This old thread seems to indicate otherwise: android forums . c o m /motorola-droid/27091-droid-includes-fm-receiver-transmitter.html (sorry for no real link--new registration here) There's talks of the hardware being present and someone claiming he had it working some back in January. This was right around the time the CLIQ had its FM support unlocked.

The FM radio "chip" is part of the bluetooth chipset, IIRC. It is present in the Droid 1. I'm pretty sure Speeddymon over at the old Alldroid was able to get it to tune stations, audio routing was the problem. Therefore, sound output was absent.

I'm new to the whole manual rooting thing and all these commands. I was able to root my phone, but I cannot get this to work. Is there a place where this process is spelled out for newbies and not all cryptic-like for advanced users?

Every time I try to adb remount I get, remount failed: Operation not permitted.

I tend to agree. But simple fact is the Droid 1 isn't being sold anymore adn for that reason people probably ain't going to work on it. That is why this is for the Droid 2 and not 1.

In reality the Droid 2 is a EOL device also...at least in its current form. The new Droid 2 is a world phone, a device shouldn't be left out simply because said device is not for sale any longer. All *droids need love.

But, Could I brick or damage my phone (Milestone, of course) if I try this app?. Simply -- i think -- the app doesn't work if the necesary hardware isn't present.

Am I right?

I did it on my Droid 1. It still works fine. If I were you or anyone. Use a Root explorer app. It's MUCH easier than other methods. My Droid still works. Just the FM app doesn't.

I just downloaded MIUI ROM and it had the FM reciver in it so it is possible!

Unfortunately, it seems that this apk doesn't work for the Epic. It installs fine, but when opening the app, it hangs on "Please wait..." Pressing the return key enables you to manually change the station, but there is no tuning going on. Don't know if it is a hardware/driver issue or whatnot, but no dice

Same with Droid 1. A user here said he used a ROM (MIUI) on his Droid 1 and SUCESSFULLY got the FM Radio to run. If this is true then this is a great thing to getting the FM Radio to run.

EDIT: I installed the MIUI Rom on my Droid 1. Said to have a working FM Radio. Sadly nothing worked. It turned on Bluetooth. Which I thought since the FM and Bluetooth are on the same chipset it might work.

Extract the files and open up the system folder, where you'll have app, bin, and lib folders. Copy those 3 folders into your sdk tools folder. Then:

cd c:\wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
adb devices
adb remount
adb push app/FMRadio.apk /system/app
adb push app/FMRadioService.apk /system/app
adb push bin/fmradioserver /system/bin
adb push lib/libFMRadio.so /system/lib
adb push lib/libfmradio_jni.so /system/lib
adb push lib/libfmradioplayer.so /system/lib
adb remount

mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system

Thank You for the complete instructions. I finally got it to work. No one else mentioned the "remount" instruction.

The way that I did it was pushed the files to the sdcard and them cp'd them over to the proper directories from there.

i.e.

adb push apps/FMRadio.apk /sdcard/FMRadio.apk
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/FMRadio.apk /system/app/FMRadio.apk
CHMOD COMMANDS FROM PREVIOUS POST
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
exit

The push command and the cp command are the ones that you'll have to repeat for each file.

It's redundant. It's more work than needed. But that's how I did it and I'm up and running.

any installed software will talk to the bluetooth and deliver a log. It on the same chip as the fm radio on D2. Therefore the software will communicate with the bluetooth on the D1 assuming there is an fm radio. Unfortunately, because of no hardware, you won't actually get to use the radio.
