I've wanted to start creating some galaxy gear apps that will ease some tasks and somehow make it worth the $200 price.
I'm new to android development so I can say that this is my first android app of this complexity.

This app comes in two pieces. The server, which must be installed on the phone, and the client which should be installed on gear. What the client does, is retrieving a list of text messages from the device and displays on the gear. You can also send text messages from gear.
Basically it's like tablet sms, but without all the background services and auto sync that will drain the battery faster on gear.

I've tested it only on a galaxy note 3 with 4.4.2 stock rom + galaxy gear with null rom v.23
Let me know if there are any bugs

For next version could you add an option to turn off the sms service on the phone side, to save battery of phone, when not needing to use the service.

Great app. Thanks for it.

Is there a way to add a shortcut to it on the gear main page? When I go to the favorites tab in gear manager it doesn't show up in the list when I try to add.

do i need to enable notifications ON in gear manager or any other special settings on?

it also force closes on my phone(popup error on my phone saying sms client has stopped...) when i try to run the client app on the gear , maybe its my phone nexus 5 with ART mode incompatible and franco kernel?

You won't see any battery drain on the watch, as all the work is done phone side. This app works flawlessly for me on my s4, so I guess it's down to your phone/set up mate.

Great app! I can reply to texts on my Nexus 5:) I agree, the black background would be very slick.

I'm having a bit of an issue. I think it's sending my texts from the gear, however when I check in my texting history on phone side, the ones I sent from the gear aren't showing up there. And when I go back and open the gear (client) to check there again, they are not there also. But when I send one from the gear, it says it sent. :confused:

Error on both devices.

I am having the same problem as well. I have an unrooted Tmobile Note 3 and running Null23.

"installs but when i open the client app in the watch, it says '..client has stopped' white screen crashes"
"it also force closes on my phone(popup error on my phone saying sms client has stopped...) when i try to run the client app on the gear "

Actually, there was a method to do this, but it's not working anymore on the latest version of gear manager, or I'm missing something. Here is the thread:

Hm, I'm aware of some force closes of the app, but only on some circumstances. I think at the possibility of crashing when the gear tries to find the phone with the server running. For this, you must have the bluetooth enabled and the server running on the phone, and on the gear you must have your phone saved in the bluetooth device list. Other than this, I'm not sure, a logcat would be helpfull. Meanwhile I will try to fix some bugs.

I will try to debug some errors that could appear. Until that, if you can provide a logcat for the app from both gear and phone, would be awesome.

    Sorry for this delay and inactivity. I was a little busy with some work. I have added a new version, but no major changes. Mostly there are bug fixes and one new thing is that the server will automatically start after a reboot.

    Hm, what version of android do you have on the phone? I have added that permission too now. Try with the new version from the first post.

    For the moment there are no notifications on gear. I will add them in a future update, but first I have to do some researches regarding the battery drain on the phone.
    And no, this app does not rely on gear manager. It's using it's communication thorough bluetooth. Samsung did not release any documentation or sdk for this, only for gear 2.

    I've updated the server apk in the first post, maybe you can give it a try.

    I'm really sorry for all of these problems. On my device it works well and this makes my testing a little bit harder because I can't see the bugs so easy. On the emulator I don't have bluetooth connectivity, so it's useless in this case. The only option I have is to update the apks and let people test. I hope I can fix the app quickly, so I can go further with more apps for gear. :D

    Sorry for all my delayed answers.

    I've updated the original post with an updated version of the client + server. I've tried to fix some of the crashes that occured but not sure if still fixed some other bugs. Another fix that i've made is that with international characters that now should be displayed correctly.

    If you encounter any error, there will be also a log file in the /sdcard/GalaxyGearSMS(Client/Server).log. That file would be helpful for me to debug some problems that may occur.

    I've also changed the theme to a black one. In the next release I will add the option to start and stop the server from the phone.
