I did a bit of work on the app today and I believe I got the "dim" setting working on your device. I refactored a bunch of the code to better support multiple devices and implemented the logic to use the lut_coefficient file to set the brightness to something other than full. I've attached a test version of the app for testing.

Would someone be able to test out this test version of the app? You should now see 3 buttons on the main UI (instead of 2) with a new button in the middle to set the brightness to "dim". You should see a distinct difference in the brightness when setting "dim"' verses "bright". Please let me know your experiences. If you can, please also test that all of the 3 settings stick across device reboots.

Reminder: This "test version" of the app is signed with a developer key so it will fail to install if you have an official version of the app installed. So you must first uninstall any official versions of the app before installing this test version.

Yes, that is definitely a bug. Would you be able to see if this is fixed with the test version of the app CapButnBrightness-1.0.7-DimTest1.apk, which is attached to the previous post? I believe this issue might have been fixed incidentally.

Attached is a new test version of the app: v1.0.7-DimTest5. In my testing this version perfectly supports the "dim" setting on the HTC One X+. Would it be possible for one or two of you HTC One X+ users to load this test version of the app, run the two quick tests below, and report your observed behaviour? For those of you who are experiencing the OS issue where the capacitive buttons backlight does not turn back on after the screen turns off, this version of the app actually fixes it!

  1. Click each of the 3 brightness buttons in the main UI; verify that the brightness level immediately changes accordingly
  2. Click each of the 3 brightness buttons in the main UI, for each button press, press the power button to turn off the screen, then press the power button again to turn the screen back on; verify that the capacitive button backlight is the same brightness that was selected prior to turning the screen off

Reminder: This "test version" of the app is signed with a developer key so it will fail to install if you have an official version of the app installed. So you must first uninstall any official versions of the app before installing this test version.

Thanks!

hi denversc,

Test 1: passed
Test 2: passed

great work. thank you :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for testing this out so quickly! Expect an official v1.0.8 app update within the next week.

If anyone else tests out v1.0.7-DimTest5 please report your findings. The more people that say it works, especially on various ROMs, the more confident I will feel to release v1.0.8 and say "it works!".

Passes 1 & 2 fine on AOKP 17/12/12 build.

Only minor issue is when you have 'dim' selected - turning on the screen makes the buttons start out at full brightness very briefly and then they change to the 'dim' level.

That "minor" issue that you've reported indeed bugs me too! I'll see what I can do about it...

Another test version of the app, v1.0.7-DimTest9, is attached. It is another attempt at getting the "dim" setting to work correctly. You may notice the buttons backlight studder a bit when powering on the screen, but it should settle into "dim" or "bright", as selected in the app.

If able, please load it and test the following scenarios:
  1. Click between the "bright" and "dim" buttons repeatedly; ensure that "bright" is indeed brighter than "dim".
  2. Select "off" in the app; power screen off; power screen on; ensure that the buttons backlight is off
  3. Select "bright" in the app; power screen off; power screen on; ensure that the buttons backlight is on at full brightness
  4. Select "dim" in the app; power screen off; power screen on; ensure that the buttons backlight is on, but dim

If you've been following this thread, you know that there have been conflicting reports as to the "dim" setting working and not working. Keep 'em coming... cuz I REALLY want it to work 100% of the time for everyone! Please be sure to mention the version of the app you have loaded (ie. v1.0.7-DimTest9) and the name of the ROM you are running.

Thanks everyone for all this help testing the app out! It is very much appreciated.

Reminder: This "test version" of the app is signed with a developer key so it will fail to install if you have an official version of the app installed. So you must first uninstall any official versions of the app before installing this test version.
