Just testing, but I think the dim setting isn't working for me.
However I only just got it to work at all with the last test, so not that bothered yet...

Keep up the hard work :D

I'm not aware of such an app, although I definitely agree with you about the vibration being unnecessarily violent. I've found that different ROMs make a difference; for example CM10 is less violent than stock (my phone is a One X though, not a One X+). I'm currently using a Galaxy Nexus as my daily driver and the vibration "violence" is much lower, almost imperceptible, and I love it! Overall, my One X is still better though and I'll be returning to it in the new year.

Good work man...thnx..
Maybe, just an idea...change the colour oft botton lights?...is that possible?

Thnx..
It's indeed an interesting idea, but from what I can tell it's not possible. I've heard a rumour that the One X+ has different colour button backlight in certain regions with certain carriers, but I have yet to see this with my own eyes. Also, nothing in the kernel sources suggest that it's possible.

Can you explain what you mean by "not working"? For example, when you select "dim" is it equivalent to "bright"? Thanks!
I'm sorry, didn't make it clear did I...
The dim setting works but I see no difference between dim and bright.

Hope that helps?

Thanks for clearing it up. That makes perfect sense. Several users have reported the same behaviour so it's definitely a legitimate issue, or perhaps a side effect of a specific custom ROM and/or kernel's tweaks. I'll need to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on v1.0.7-DimTest9. There are obviously some people for whom the "dim" setting works and others for whom it doesn't. Furthermore, there doesn't seem to be any pattern, such as a specific ROM or kernel, which causes this non-behaviour.

So my plan is to release the current "dim" behaviour in official v1.0.8, even though it doesn't work for everyone. To help further investigate issues with people for whom dim doesn't work I'm going to add a "Report Issues" screen that gathers together useful info, such as app version, ROM and kernel versions, and whether or not certain relevant files exist. Then, users can either take a screenshot or save it to a file and send that info to report issues in a standard way.

I had originally hoped to have v1.0.8 ready in a few days from now, but due to the Christmas holidays and other personal commitments in the new year, the first or second week of January is a more likely eta. In the meantime, if v1.0.7-DimTest9 works for you... there's no reason not to stick with it :)

Version 1.0.8-Beta1 APK is attached. If no serious issues arise with this beta then it will become the official v1.0.8 release.

Changes in v1.0.8-Beta1 (since v1.0.7)
  • "dim" support added for the International (quad-core) HTC One X and HTC One X+ (note: does not work on all ROMs/kernels/hboots)
  • "Debug Information" screen added, from the "Settings" screen
  • New application icon (thanks to XDA user lesscro)
  • "Credits" screen added, accessible from "About" screen
  • Complete re-write of code that sets capacitive buttons brightness, to allow it to support multiple devices
  • Fixed scrolling in "About" screen
  • Fixed crash when device is rotated in the "Settings" screen

Note that the newly-added "dim" support for the quad-core Tegra3 devices has been reported to work by some users and others have reported no difference between "dim" and "bright". Unfortunately, the root cause of the issue is unknown but I still plan to release this in v1.0.8 since some users report success. "Dim" fully works for the dual-core S4 North American HTC One X (a.k.a. "XL").

Please reply to this post with your feedback. If reporting issues, please go to the new "Debug Information" screen, press the "copy" button, and paste its contents. This will immensely help me investigate issues. You can also attach a screenshot of this screen if that is easier.

If anyone is willing, I've created a set of "regression tests" that can be executed manually in about 20 minutes to ensure that the entire application works correctly. Any of these test case failures is a legitimate issue. If you would like to run these tests, please see them at https://code.google.com/p/hox-cap-butn-brightness/wiki/ReleaseTests

Reminder: This "beta version" of the app is signed with a developer key so it will fail to install if you have an official version of the app installed. So you must first uninstall any official versions of the app before installing this test version.

Finally, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

There is 2 thing missing to make this app perfect:

I've notice that my capacitive button doesn't always light up, it depend on how much ambiant light it detect when unlocking the phone (and maybe later on). It would be great to be able to change those numbers.

Even better, it would be great to have a widget, a bit like those stock htc widget to switch sound profile, but for the brightness. It could be click to switch to next settings or click for on/off.

That's interesting behaviour. There is certainly no logic done in the application itself where its behaviour depends on the ambient light level detected by the light sensor. The behaviour you are experiencing is either a coincidence or perhaps something else is happening in the kernel. Would you be able to capture the information (either via screenshot or the "copy" button) on the Settings -> Debug Information screen of the application and paste it into a reply to this post? The information there may shed some light on the root cause.

This is a great suggestion, and in fact is currently in the backlog: https://code.google.com/p/hox-cap-butn-brightness/issues/detail?id=11. I have never written a home screen widget before but I have done a bit of reading and it's definitely doable. I don't have an eta for you though :)
