Specifically, I am trying to add the ad services sites used on SlickDeals. Here is a paste of my backup JSON that I try to restore. I see that you can only have them in Allowed or Redirected. I have tried both methods, but I still get the error when browsing.

Specifically, in the case of tkqlhce.com, I see that it is part of the Blocked list. Can I remove it somehow?

Is there something else that I need to do?

As far as your host sources, can you share those? Or are there other sources I should use instead of the stock options?
I don't understand what do you exactly want to achieve with Redirected hosts

I don't use them but AFAIK, redirected hosts must have the IP address defined, where are they redirected to

Indeed, try to manually add an Redirected host (open the top-right Redirected box, press +). You wiil have the pop-up as on the screenshots - you can not press Add until you provide the redirected address.
And then, when exported to json, it will look like:
"redirected": [
{
"host": "Googleadservices.com",
"redirect": "142.250.75.2",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "tradedoubler.com",
"redirect": "52.19.200.98",
"enabled": true
}
]

Here I used their original addresses (obtained by dnslookup), maybe you want to redirect them to somewhere else

In the json you are trying to restore from, all hosts in the "redirected" list are missing their "redirect" address

Btw, such json can be restored from (Restored successfully), but I remember there were also some bugs in the past that restoring did not correctly looked for the syntax and made it possible to import some wrong combinations.
Again, not using Redirected and not familiar with

My json zipped and attached. Take a look, instead of manually listing one by one Allowed hosts, I added them into the local file myAllowedList.txt and then I added that local file as a hosts source. Similarly I have also myBlockedList.txt file.
You cannot import that from my json because their Content type URLs are local to my filesystem - you have to create your local files and import them by switching to FILE type - see the last screenshot

Edit:
I know there is a field for IPv4 and IPv6 Redirection addresses in Preferences but I'm not sure does it apply to those hosts you enter manually (or through the json) - because, when you want to enter them manually, it doesn't let you press Add until you provide the redirected address.
And then it shows differently in the Redirected box (host plus redirection address) than when you restore from your json (showing only the host).
After all, when I backup how I added manually, I also have redirected addresses in the created json

My opinion on Adaway (for what it's worth).
While the application is very effective at blocking domains, I'm not sure how effective it is in blocking ads. For instance, I prefer to use Firefox to access, for example, Facebook. With just adaway activated, I see those annoying in-line 'sponsored' ads. The Firefox add-on uBlock origin blocks those ads, Adaway doesn't.
Can someone point me to a website that the app effectively the blocks ads on? I can't find one!
AdAway does not use any other technique than blocking the given sites - for certain apps like YT that stream the ads inside their 'regular' connection to server, you have to use different adblockers (like Vanced YT for YT) - sorry, don't know for FB

90% of my blocking is in app blocking NOT web blocking.

However, AdAway is a tool, it is up to the user to select host files that will have hosts blocked.

For me, host blocking blocks both web and app ads. Firefox will block ads 0 in apps. Right tool for the job.

I don't understand what do you exactly want to achieve with Redirected hosts

Perhaps I misunderstood a few things...

I just uninstalled and reinstalled version 5.10.0 so I was starting at a clean slate. I manually entered all of the entries in my JSON under the Allowed page and clicked Apply and rebooted.

For a specific example, the way that SlickDeals works is that clicking a link sends you through one of what I called/considered a "redirect" website, so it passes you through "tkqlhce.com" which brings you to the deal you wanted at Amazon.com.

In trying to resolve my issue, I had "tkqlhce.com" added to Allowed and Redirected, but neither were able to bypass the entry being in the Blocked list. Hence my assumption that something was broken.

I think I should be using these as Allowed then, right? So my syntax looks correct as

"allowed": [
{
"host": "jdoqocy.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "redirectingat.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "tkqlhce.com",
"enabled": true
}

But if I try to see this Eddie Bauer deal

I click through the "See Deal" button (visible only on mobile) and get stuck at what appears to be an AdAway block screen in Chrome because even though ojrq.net is on the Allowed list, it is also in the Blocked list from my Sources.

I also copied your Allowed List and added that as a source. Didn't seem to fix the problem with any of the SlickDeals links or Pinterest which has stopped working on my phone browser in recent weeks. Both files are attached if you are able to take a look and see any glaring issues.

Sorry but I don't see how/why could you expect that my Allowed list may help you for Amazon, SlickDeals, Pinterest, who knows

I didn't mention them in my post. Actually, I never shop on Amazon and I even don't know what are the famous SlickDeals

You asked for my json and I sent it back to you.
I also packed my local Allowed list as an example of how to more easilly define a number of Allowed (Blocked or even Redirected) hosts, instead of adding them one by one through the json restore file

Amd by reading the names of my half a dozen Allowed hosts, you can easily see that they are all about Xiaomi (3rd largest smartphone manufacturer) and MIUI (Xiaomi's Android fork) - hence some hosts needed for the proper operation of my phone (system updates, Xiaomi clouds, etc)

Yes, I opened your list and saw your entries. I thought you were going to also open my added zip and see that I replaced your links with mine and how my syntax was the same as your file. Or maybe find what I was doing wrong. Comparing the two, I can't see what details I am neglecting to include in order to access these websites.

I have attached screenshots in case you prefer not to open a zip from a stranger.

The Pinterest sources were entries that I saw in Blocked which I wanted to add to Allowed to see if I could access Pinterest in my mobile browser again. This did not fix things.

The red entries were the ones that I manually entered. I can remove them and only get them from the Allowed Sources list if you think that is what trumps the Blocked list.

Important:
Upon making a change in AdAway configuration, make sure you click on Apply (if it asks you) and wait until it finishes before you go for another change.
Also, when you import a json, force the refreshing, etc

Finally, when you are done with the changes, REBOOT and only then test how it works

---

Also, please don't import your Allowed and Redirected sites through json, but enter changes manually (once you have a tested and working configuration, then backup to json)

That way AdAway will guide you what you need to enter and you will have better control what you are doing

And then, instead of posting jsons, post the screenshots from your Allowed (and Redirected) box in AdAway

--

I suppose you are using a root version. Go to Preferences, Root based adblocker, Open hosts file

If you have MiXPlorer (you can install from Playstore or find its XDA thread), you will be able to open it As a text file and inspect

For example, if you wanted to put ojrq.net to the Whitelist, then use Find and search for ojrq.net
MiXplorer must not find any line like:
0.0.0.0 ojrq.net
or
127.0.0.1 ojrq.net
If it finds, then it was not whitelisted

--

You said:
>> because even though ojrq.net is on the Allowed list

but in the Allowed list (this same your post), I dont see ojrq.net?!
"allowed": [
{
"host": "jdoqocy.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "redirectingat.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "tkqlhce.com",
"enabled": true
}

Hence, something is wrong here - you either copied the wrong Allowed list or described wrongly, etc

But I asked you to better open Allowed box and inspect which sites are really listed there (and provide it's screenshot instead of potentially wrong json)

---

I really don't know how SlickDeals work (and I'm not going to play with) but if they work the way you described:
>> "...clicking a link sends you through one of what I called/considered a "redirect" website, so it passes you through "tkqlhce.com" which brings you to the deal you wanted at Amazon.com"

Then you should use Redirect and not (only) Allowed as you do now in this post.
And read my previous post about adding Redirect rules - and add them MANUALLY through Redirect box, +, not by importing a json

For example, if you want to redirect that clicking to the site www.a1a1a1.com opens www.b2b2b2.org instead, then you have to use dnslookup to find what is the IP address of www.b2b2b2.org

Suppose, that address is 129.19.29.12
then you have to Redirect like on the screenshots

--

These are the general guidelines - you need to figure out how you SlickDeals etc work, and experiment

--

Last but not the least:
Redirect will work for http sites but not easily for https sites

Suppose you wanted to redirect https://www.a1a1a1.com
to

Chrome will find that certificate for b2 (it is opening) does not match a1 name (it was supposed to open) and will block you to open for Security reasons

You will have to click on Advanced, then Proceed to ... (unsafe), to let it open

@joefuf - Below is the proof of concept how Redirect works in AdAway

We will redirect two (non-existing sites) www.myRedirectTest1.org and www.myRedirectTest2.org to some Github page 185.199.108.153

First of all, click to:
http://www.myRedirectTest1.org
Browser will warn you that you maybe entered a typo because the given site does not exist (and it's not redirected yet) - screenshot 6

Now, click to Redirect box top-right in AdAway. Then to the bottom-right red Plus icon +, to manually enter a redirection for www.myRedirectTest1.org.
Fill the pop-up as on the screenshot 1.
Add and let it Apply when you finish

You can also restore the following json to add the same redirection for www.myRedirectTest2.org:
{
"sources": [],
"blocked": [],
"allowed": [],
"redirected": [
{
"host": "www.myRedirectTest2.org",
"redirect": "185.199.108.153",
"enabled": true
}
]

Redirect box will show now two redirections - screenshot 2

REBOOT (the phone). Click to open:
http://www.myRedirectTest1.org
It should show now the page as on screenshot 3

The same for http://www.myRedirectTest2.org

However, if you click to:
http://www.myRedirectTest3.org
browser will again warn you that you might have entered the typo

Now, try to open as:
https://www.myRedirectTest1.org
or
https://www.myRedirectTest2.org

Browser will warn you as on screenshot 4. Click to Advanced at the bottom and then to Proceed... - screenshot 5.
Finally, it will open the Github 404 page as on the screenshot 3

You can similarly redirect an existing site www.google.com to that IP address (but it will affect your googling)

Interesting, if you directly click to:
http://185.199.108.153
it will properly open as for:
http://www.adaway.org

I don't kbiw why Github opens that page here, but returns 404 when accessing through the rediretions

---

Now for your Amazon, Pinterest, SlickDeals, etc, you need to figure out which site(s) to have to redirect to which address and then to configure it and test yourself🥸

But you see from the ptevious example that although properly redirected in AdAway, there might be additional issues with https certificate, Web server (and page) you are redirecting to, etc

For example you cannot redirect in AdAway to.the IP address AND PARTICULAR page like:
185.199.108.153/index.html
or:
185.199.108.153/index.php
(but that might be something you would need for your SlickDeals)

Good luck :)

Your Allowed list looks ok (as a file) but there is no proof that you have applied that list through your hosts sources

My local Allowed list has 8 hosts. See my screenshot how AdAway confirms that the list with 8 hpsts was processed - if it was not, you cannot expect to see its entries in the Allowed box (and AdAway would
still block them if they are blocked by your other hosts sources)

Play yourself by disabling and reenabling the Alllwed list. Every time make sure that you accept Apply - really play yourself, sometimes Apply does not show up or something

Without applying, the list will not be processed and there is no use of the list

That is now really enough from my side

Good advice. I started from scratch again, uninstalling the app and reinstalling after a reboot.

This time, I used the Allowed List as a Source. You can see in my screenshots that I checked the options that you pointed out in your instructions, marking it as Allowed, seeing that it is available as a Source, and that my specified websites are in the Allowed list.

Then I rebooted.

I attempted to try a SlickDeals website again. I was routed to a jdoqocy.com website and told my connection was not private. I clicked proceed anyway, but I got the dreaded AdAway bird page.

--
I suppose you are using a root version. Go to Preferences, Root based adblocker, Open hosts file

If you have MiXPlorer (you can install from Playstore or find its XDA thread), you will be able to open it As a text file and inspect

0.0.0.0 ojrq.net
or
127.0.0.1 ojrq.net
If it finds, then it was not whitelisted
Checking my Allowed list, jdoqocy is there. But also checking the Blocked list as well as the Hosts file, jdoqocy.com is listed there.

So something makes me feel like the Allowed additions, whether it's manually to the Allowed list or by a MyAllowedList.txt Source isn't surpassing the Blocked list or the Sources with block lists.

You said:
>> because even though ojrq.net is on the Allowed list

but in the Allowed list (this same your post), I dont see ojrq.net?!
"allowed": [
{
"host": "jdoqocy.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "redirectingat.com",
"enabled": true
},
{
"host": "tkqlhce.com",
"enabled": true
}

Hence, something is wrong here - you either copied the wrong Allowed list or described wrongly, etc
I apologize for being inarticulate. I was giving an example of my syntax but basing it off of the example Slickdeals link that I had provided in that post. In that example, that Slickdeals post sent me through ojrq.net.

If this is the case, then it does not seem that it will be possible to write a rule correct? I will not be able to map all of the links to which I might be passed to specific websites. Today, clicking a link might send me through jdoqocy.com which might pass me to a deal on Amazon but tomorrow a different link thing through jdoqocy.com might pass me to Eddie Bauer.

Finally, is there any way I might be able to omit certain websites from these blocked success lists? Or make my own blocked source list from these cat sides but make my own version omit the websites I am having trouble with?

I thank you for all of the time and explanation that you have given me. I know that it will not help just me but others who find this when seeking help.

Is there anyway I can use blocked Twitter with adaway..cos in my country Twitter is blocked. Thanks
Its kinda the exact opposite of what host blocking is used for. However, if you know the IP of a server that acts as a proxy and is not blocked in your country, I would propose that theoretically you may be able to use the redirect features to send it to the proxy server instead of the blocked twitter address. I do not like your chances.

Hi there, I'm on AdAway 5.10.0 and it's throwing me this error. I'm running stock rooted 9.0 on my Pixel 2XL, with Magisk 22.0. I just updated BusyBox add-on thing in Magisk Manager and rebooting. When I tried to revert my hosts it told me it failed to revert. Anyone have any suggestions?

When I set adaway on pause, is it somehow still possible that some content getting blocked? I'm asking because since a while on the IMDB doesn't show anymore description when I tab on a movie in a search list.

Can't figure out what it is.

If using root version, try with rebooting after pause or resume

Thank you. Indeed I'm using root version. So I just paused adaway and rebooted. But still, content doesn't load. I also deleted cache and data and reinstalled the app. No success. I don't use any other add killer apps or modules. I hoped that adaway would be the culprit. But now, I don't know where else to look.

Searched for the issue online. But it seems I'm the only one with this problem. Weird.

Anyone have any ideas? It's still doing the "Failed to revert hosts file" when I try to pause it.

Weird.
Are you using a custom kernel?
Some kernels have ad blocking built in.

    Hi all,

    Here is a new version that will bring a touch of color to AdAway for the coming new year 😊
    Thanks to brijrajparmar27, the home screen was improved with icon colors and background!
    I even reworked settings toggles according its advice. Don't hesitate to share your feedback about those changes.

    Otherwise, there is a bunch of (minor) performance improvements and the usual dependency updates.
    Please note I now use the Jake Wharton's Timber logging library and enabling the verbose logging option will have a performance impact (it always had but it should have a greater impact now).

    I also enabled the 5.10 version of F-Droid in the built-in updater. Except the 5.11 version to be available from this store in the coming days.

    Have a great holiday all! 🎄🎅

    Changelog:
    • Improve home screen with icon color and decoration
    • Improve settings UI elements
    • Improve search filter performance in hosts list
    • Improve resource clean up after parsing hosts source
    • Improve logs with Timber
    • Improve button descriptions
    • Update Android gradle plugin
    • Update AndroidX libraries
    • Update third party libraries
    • Update mongoose web server
    • Update translations

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to brijrajparmar27 for its contribution.

    Good morning,
    Has the disconnection bug when transferring data to WiFi on non-rooted smartphones been fixed?.

    Regards

    Not yet. It becomes part of my morning routine. Grabbing my device, checking the state of the device, capturing a logcat, scrolling the log to check what happened, looking for system errors, wandering into android platform documentation… Not an easy task!

    I fixed a lot of issues during the whole VPN rewrite. The last one dates from this weekend.
    I found the Android Backup Service was killing the VPN foreground service as part as the backup process.
    So I rewrote the backup solution. Good news backups will now works properly (the backup data was exceeding the allowed quota so the backup was never uploading to Google services...) for both rooted and non-rooted users.

    See the commit for all the details.

    Strictly speaking of the network switch bug, the new VPN works pretty well on my side. Again, it will improve from user feedback but I use it on my daily driver without issue (2/3/4/5g, personal wifi, entreprise wifi with multiple hotspots). If you are developer yourself, don't hesitate to built the feature/vpn branch and report how it works for you!

    why can't i import this list to the app?
    Because it isn't a host file. Host files are formatted

    Please Add features Block ads with option Apps installed 🙏 thx
    When using VPN mode, you can control for which apps blocking will apply (by default, it will block for all the apps installed).
    However, it works only for blocking through DNS - if some apps use proprietary methods to push ads through their content channel (like YouTube), you must use special solutions (like Vanced YT) to block their ads

    In the hosts mode, AdAway can only give the changed hosts file to the system. After that, system applies thtat hosts file to all apps and AdAway cannot control to which apps the changed hosts file would be applied or not

    Finally, by choosing hosts sources, user controls which types of 'ads' will be blocked. By searching on tthe Net, you can find hosts sources that block only commercial apps, and/or analytics, porn, etc

    All that (theory, how VPN mode works, how hosts file works) has been extensively discussed earlier here and one can also google and read/learn about, hence it makes no sense to write about all that once again (how the given two mode work and what is possible and how/why or not)

    OMy Oneplus 9r is rooted. But the adway is not working.
    What exactly is not working - blocking apps but in which app?

    Android version?

    Have you enabled Systemless hosts in Magisk app and rebooted, then configured AdAway and rebooted again?

    AdAway

    AdAway is an open source ad blocker for Android using the hosts file.

    Google Play Store notice:

    According the Google Play Developer Policy, especially the "Device and Network Abuse" section, ad blocker like AdAway violates the "Apps that block or interfere with another app displaying ads." rule and can't be distributed on distributed on the Play Store.
    As Free and Open Source Software, AdAway is available from F-Droid Store or this XDA thread :good:

    Requirements:

    This application requires Android 8 or above and does no more require root.

    For older Android versions, a rooted device is required.

    Changelog:

    If you don't want to read each announce post of this thread, you can:

    Downloads:

    Stable versions are available on F-Droid Store and below:

    Beta versions are available on XDA development thread only:

    AdAway 5.0.10

    Problem? Read this:

    * If you use Chrome and still see ads on web pages, remember to disable the "data saver" or "reduced data usage" browser option
    * Check your APN settings for any proxy, the proxy itself could be allowing ads. Disable the proxy.
    * After you install or make any change to AdAway, you must reboot for those changes to take effect
    * If you are still having issues please read and understand all the info in the wiki before asking for help here

    Otherwise, this is the right thread to discuss about it or file a bug report here.

    Hi all,

    A new year is coming and I wish you all to have nice holidays :victory:

    Just few words about this ending year. There was about 12 releases in 2019 which brings you a new UI, a lot of bug fixes, Android 10 support, Gist and GitLab hosting support and better Magisk support.
    All of this is possible thanks to the community to help users to discover the app, learn how to use it and report any new bug and also your moral, nice words and thanks you can send to me, and financial support.
    Thanks a lot for all donators, GitHub sponsor and the Pixel 2 you sent me to test Android 10 support.

    For the next year, I hope to release the next version (V5), at least in beta to start. It's been 9 months since its first lines of code and things are working quite nicely.
    It aims to make the app simpler to use for the main use cases, support rooted and non rooted devices and remove old hacks/workaround which are no more needed on recent setups.

    But before this big next update, I still have time to fix current issue with a new release :p

    Changelog:
    • Fix GitLab hosting support (commit date parsing failed)
    • Translation update

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to @gallegonovato for its helpful bug report and @Vankog for translation update.

    Hi all,

    Long time no see! It's been more than two months since the last update.
    I can't say I was not active on the project as I start working on a new version (5.x.y) as a side project.
    I won't share the source code yet as it is not ready at all and I don't want to give an ETA but this new version targets the following goals:
    • 1. Revamp the UI
    • 2. Clean up old support
    • 3. Address one of the main drawback of the app

    1. The card based UI does not feel right. Welcome card takes too much space, update button / status has a lot of critic. I guess I can do better.
    I started a new simpler and lighter design which provide the most useful information on home screen and all main actions to trigger in one tap (no more burger menu).
    It is still under heavy development but I hopefully get a friend onboard, specialized in graphics and design, to help me :highfive:

    2. In order to simplify the development, I clean up the app and remove support for old features.
    I bump target SDK version so I finally get Java 8 language feature (it was released 5y ago…) and move to topjohnwu root library (instead of home made one). It means systemless support is now handled by Magisk and other root solutions will still work.

    3. Think of what prevent most of users to use AdAway? Now it's gone!
    It's not gone forever. It's still here but there will be a fallback to workaround it.
    I won't tell more until the first public beta but I guess you get the point :fingers-crossed:

    In the meanwhile, here is a new version!

    Feedback:

    Is anyone using a hosts list hosted on Gitlab? It keeps showing "Unknown update status".
    GitLab, like GitHub do not set LastModified HTTP header so update status is not supported... yet!

    Changelog:
    • Add Gist and GitLab hosting support for hosts file
    • Add option to set default IPv6 redirection
    • Improve reboot command
    • Improve UI for overlays
    • Update translations

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to @MSF Jarvis and ralayax for theirs contributions and @andy356 for its helpful bug report.

    Hi all,

    Feedback:

    Hmm, not working for me for this URL, v4.1.0 shows something like not updated in -360 days (some large negative value). Can you please see if you can reproduce?
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/alternates/fakenews-gambling-porn/hosts
    It works well here. I failed to reproduce as I change the HTTP client library and how I use it.
    But update date for the source you link definitely works now.

    All the F-Droid apps I know of have manual push updates to the store.

    Isn't automatic build basically for nightlies?
    Not really. You could choose a lot of different mode.
    For example, F-Droid server watches AdAway GitHub repository to find tags which match a specific versioning pattern.

    I exist still... do you know what i have to do to transfer ownership? if i edit project it doesn't let me change the primary author so i assume i have to PM some higher up to make this happen?
    Thank you so much! :highfive:

    This is now done, @PerfectSlayer is the OP of this thread.
    Thank you too!

    Changelog:
    • Add hosts source download cache
    • Add snackbar notification to update host from DNS request listing
    • Update UI from Material Design to Material Theming
    • Update gradle, plugins and dependencies
    • Fix crash parsing not defined host source last modified date
    • Fix native modules build script (required for F-Droid build server)
    • Fix Transifex issues

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to all recent donators! Your help is really appreciated :good:

    AdAway 4.2.0 on AndroidFileHost (md5: 023169e7c345ef7297095793024f8478)

    Hi all,

    I talked enough about it the past weeks and here it is: the first beta for the next version of AdAway.
    As you know, the main feature is the removal of root requirement but it also comes with a lot of improvements like an easier to use UI, a builtin updater, new cache and databases to improve reliability or even a quick pause/resume adblocking button that 3rd party apps can control.

    It took me literally a year and 330+ commits to build it (the first commit of this branch was April the 7th) and I hope it will be worth it.
    It should allow the app to be viable in the future with root being more and more difficult to achieve at each new Android release and Google hardening SafetyNet checks.

    I will try to answer to the most expected questions here so you still can post a link to this FAQ later to lost users.

    FAQ:

    Does this version replace the v4.x versions?
    No. This is still a preview version and does not replace the stable one.
    It is available to test it and report issues and feedback before being promoted to stable.

    Can I upgrade and revert safely?
    Yes. Both v4 and v5 use the same settings export format.

    Why does this version targets Android 8+ Oreo only?
    Like the v4, v5 is expected to offer support for latest devices.
    Android 8 and above represent more than 60% of device distribution and will grew through time.
    If you use an older device, root solutions work very well and v4 is here for you (like v2 and v3 stayed for legacy devices).

    How the hell does it work without root?
    This version provides two adblocking methods: the usual root one using hosts file and a new one using local VPN.
    The VPN solution allows to filter and alter connections of your devices without root access.

    Is using a VPN safe?
    In the case of AdAway, yes. It uses VPN API but does not connect to a VPN server.
    In the case of VPN client app, it depends.
    To give you more details, a VPN client app uses the VPN API to create a virtual network interface on your device and redirect all your traffic into it.
    If you imaginge the VPN like a pipe (the right word is tunnel), client VPN app outputs all your traffic on a VPN server which is able to check what you are doing on the Internet.
    With AdAway, your network is not redirected to a VPN server but your device internet connection (same as no VPN). VPN API is only used to get traffic into it to break the connections to ad servers.

    Is VPN use battery?
    Yes, like everything you do on device.
    Witouth root, a VPN service will be running permanently to filter your traffic.
    Good news is it will only filter DNS traffic. Not all traffic is redirected into it so it won't be as expensive as you can fear.

    Did you come up with this idea alone?
    Absolutely not! I spent a lot of hours trying to find altenatives to hosts based adblocking (like routes or private DNS). But nothing was better than VPN based adblocking.
    So we (MrRobinson and I) approched Julian Klode, developer of DNS66 more than three years ago to see if we can merge our apps. It wasn't that easy as we don't develop our apps the same way so I ended up by integrating the DNS66 adblocking method into AdAway. It is fine for Julian, his app is Open Source and he himself built it from the core code of AdBuster app (an VPN based adblocking app).

    Should we stop using DNS66 for AdAway?
    Not at all. DNS66 is a great app and provides some features that AdAway doesn't have (yet?), like DNS settings.
    DNS66 is a great app, keep using it if you like it!
    If both apps used the same adblocking method a year ago when I start this version, I keep adding feature to the VPN adblocking method and most of them won't be in DNS66.
    If Julian ports them back to DNS66, it's great if it can help his app and users!

    Is it me or the app put on weight?
    Yes, the app significantly grew due to new libraries like VPN related ones and Android Jetpack.
    It also stores more data on device: a http cache, a host database, a hosts copy, etc...
    I think 15~20mo of storage is still fine.
