You have to whitelist the host files for those apps. Run a DNS log and try to get into the apps. Then it will tell you which host files are causing the problems. I had to do that for a couple apps including Amazon.

Yep. I see a couple in there.

Edit: Not sure which ones are causing the problem. I tried whitelisting the one that caused a logcat error and that didn't get rid of the problem. So I whitelisted all the hosts that came up on the DNS log. See screenshot

blocking any of those in that screenshot besides the fls-na one will cause you problems. I have poked at them many times. And even the fls-na one feels like it occasionally causes problems but definitely the others shouldn't be blocked

Fls-na was the one that caused the logcat error. But after whitelisting it, the problem still existed. So I did all of them.

Some of the articles mentioning their relationship would say things like Forrester found 30% of customers check prices on Amazon before making a purchase. Stuff like that is kinda what we want to block if at all possible.

Rebooting was optional. It removes cached DNS entries, and will serve the same purpose now as it served in older (i.e., 4.x) versions, if you use the rooted hosts file method. If you're OK letting time expire your cache, don't reboot.

Oh, I thought that I had to reboot since it prompted me after every update. Thanks for the tip!

Hi all,

Just a quick update about Paypal and donations because someone tell me on twitter he can't donate.

The V5 seems to be pretty popular and I received a lot of donations (some dozens) the past few days.
That is awesome but Paypal has locked my account because I didn't verified my id... I really don't have the habit to get so many transactions so I wasn't aware of this issue! (what a noob I do...)
I just did all the paperwork and my account will be verified in the next 2 to 4 business days.

To be honest, all the donations are about ~300€. It's about ~15€ / month of beta development.
It will allow me to run the back-end hosting, buy a development device when the Pixel 2 you offered me will no more receive system update, buy a data plan to test VPN on my dev device, etc...
It is money that leaves my mind peaceful when I know I have to make some expense for the project. Thanks again you all!

So does 5.1.0 need the systemless hosts module anymore? My ROM is LineageOS MicroG and Magisk, without that module, but it still seems to work.

If your using the root method, than yes. If your using the VPN method, than No.

It seems to work because my /system partition was already read-write, which is weird, because i thought it's read-only by default. It was Android 10 btw.

Maybe Lineage managed to make the system R/W? Pretty cool and handy.

If your phone model was originally released with Android earlier than 10, then System was most likely R/W, and it stayed so when they upgraded firmware to A10

Did you have any previous version installed or did you just install the app? If you were upgrading, from which version did you came from?


Thanks for the information. Are you saying the app was launching but no ad blocking option was active in app settings?
Then you reinstalled the app and, this time, it asked you to choose the ad blocking to use (but it didn't asked it after you upgrade).

See I don't get the doggy with the fls- one. In fact, I'm thinking of adding their other geographic entries since I assume this one is only for North America users.


I would probably add all of these because I'm certain that's how Forrester would compare how well Amazon ads compare to Google's Doubleclick ads

Hi, the new AdAway 5.1.0 break my banking app, I can log in but can't access any fuctions within app as it return "you need an internet access". When I disable ad blocking it work again. With AdAway 4.3.6 I have no problem at all, it work as good for everything else and my banking app work good too. I use the Desjardins banking app (Canada)
I tried to log DNS request, reproduce the error, then whitelist everything the log captured, but the error persist, the only way to make it work is to disable ad blocking or downgrade to AdAway 4.3.6

Any help ? It's no big deal I can use 4.3.6 just fine, but eventually I would like to keep AdAway up to date. Thank you !

Adaway don't block anything without the host list. Use the link to wiki on OP and the dns monitoring to whitelist the necessary links.

Remember you must deactivate Adaway before log dns, the app must work after deactivate adaway.

Edit : that was the problem I managed to capture 10 link that was breaking my banking app, but I keep finding others with time. I also found, it is not the fault of adaway 5.1.0 in particular, my host list was just not up to date, so when I reinstall 4.3.6 and update host it break my banking app also.
I don't know why the host was updated with all those link if they are used for other than ads, it is quite annoying to find them and whitelist them one by one...
