i'm experiencing the same. don't know about 6.0.0b, though. haven't updated yet.

As I have stated several times, I use root mode but with all auto updates disabled. Every day or two, or three, I open AdAway and let it update through the hosts sources. I have to reboot anyway (for Magisk to mount new hosts file) hence I see no use of letting the AdAway auto-updating in the background by itself

As that, when I open AdAway to update, I browse or read XDA in parallell and hence I didn't pay attention and/or didn't observe any noticable/important difference with 5.12.1 compared to the previous versions

Btw, I never run a huge hosts sources list and my blocked list is not so big (reading your posts I see that you still experiment with the new and new hosts sources, hence I would expect you to have a substantially bigger hosts sources list, huge blocked list etc -and probably with auto updates enabled)

It also depends on the memory available (updating a huge hosts sources list with a big blocked list would definitely struggle if not enough memory is available)

I don't have the automatic updates active either. I do the same as you. I open Adaway and hit check for updates, and let Adaway do what it has to do.

But I do notice a difference from the last version to this new version. For example a list like 1 hosts updated it without any problem. And small lists were updated, like children eat jelly beans hahaha.

But now it takes much longer. I even downgraded to the previous version and you can see the difference, from one to another.

That's why I was asking. Since I didn't change anything from one version to another, nor host file lists. Nor in the way to update. And magisk with the plugin installed. And so far I never had problems with it creating and copying the new hosts.

What a colleague says is that Adaway chokes again with the screen rotation activated. That if it goes from horizontal to vertical, and the other way around it stops or crashes. But this I can not say since I always use it in portrait mode.

I'm not saying I don't believe you that maybe the new version updates slower. I just say that I didn't observe something to be concerned about. And Im to lazy too install now an older version to use it over a couple of days to be able to compare

But if you push things to the limit, huge blocked list to be updated, old phone with small RAM, the phone/app will behave weirdly

Btw, I have 8 GB RAM, and usually running with 5+ GB RAM free, and my Blocked list is 215 K - as on the screenshot

No orientation crashes on six and my four lists update as fast as ever (didn't notice anything like this on stable either). Do you have a lot of lists? big lists? Maybe the time increase has to do with the duplicates (triplicate etc) being removed. Computers aren't instantaneous with large tasks.

I did not noticed a difference in the speed of checking/updating hosts files.
AdAway v6.0.0

I run root-mode on my Nexus 7 and non-root (VPN) mode on my Pixel 3a.
I still have a few minor issues with VPN mode but, I have not had time to log and test to report them yet.

I did double check the orientation change on my Nexus 7 (2013) tonight.
I cleared all hosts and updated so I had no blocked hosts.

Then re-selected the sources and updated.
I switched between portrait and landscape a few times while the sources were downloading and it did not seem to affect AdAway.

If you are using hosts sources that do not offer a Last-modified header, like Codeberg and NixNet.
Last-modified header missing -- time-stamps turned off.

That might be causing an added delay in checking/updating hosts files.

Now that I type this, GitHub and GitLab links might also have a slight delay.
Do to the workaround to overcome the missing Last-modified header from GitHub/GitLab. ​

I am a minimalist when it comes to hosts sources.
Currently I have 18,353 blocked. Even that seems a little high to me.

The sources I am use are all websites.
AdAway official hosts - Pete Lowe blocklist hosts - Personal hosts - mvps (winhelp2002) hosts

@PerfectSlayer, I tested the orientation change couple of times with 5.12.1 and it seems I found a problem:

When you switch from portrait to landscape while updating hosts sources, the third line: "Checking ... hosts source for update" disappears.
And when you switch back from landscape to portrait, that third line does not come back

It continues updating, just it doesn't display the third line to show what's doing now (hence if it takes long for somebody, he might wrongly think that it stopped or something)

And when it finishes the update the third line is still missing to show that either "No source update found" or to show "Hosts file updated successfully"

Hence I don't see that changing the orientation affects the update but it does affect the user interface

I was able to check the horientacion and no problems. I do not know why this colleague of mine says he has failures....

I did notice the speed adjustment by going back to Adaway 5.12.0.

In Adaway version 5.12.1 it took forever to do the pricesis. And in the previous one without problems.

The ram of my movkl, so I don't know exactly. I think 3 Gb (LPDDR4). It is a Huawei Nexus 6p. But I never had problems running Adaway in all versions, and I've been using it for years. With magisk in sh latest version and the module for magisk for dl hosts.

I don't use automatic upgrades. Gago as always. By wiffi or datox, I upgrade and it was always very fast. I don't know if it's because the new version of Adawag was updated by fdroid.

Pefo in version 5.12.0 goes like a Ferrari or a Bugati.

Yes, seems like the behavior changed in Twitter recently; it used to only force the t.co the first time you followed a link, but now it does it every time.
