Okay.

I think I got it back.

I downloaded a DataMaster-Android-AdBlock-Hosts text file I found on the internet.

I removed the txt extension.

I then copied the 10.4 Mb file and replaced it with the host file in /system/etc using Total Commander.

Rebooted and ran AdAway which once again gave errors stating I was not online.

It seems to be working though.

I understand nothing. :D

Please, you need to provide more info - which AdAway version number you installed.
Also, which Magisk version (for root) you have.
What is your phone and ROM, and actually what is your Android version?

Also, what about Systemless hosts - did you enable in Magisk (and reboot)?
Did you afterwards restarted AdAway and ask it to configure again the root method, and restart afterwards?

Good afternoon @Zippy the Wonderslug

The problem is that for you to get adaway on your nexus 10 with android 4.4.4.4

You need Magisk and Magisk Manager. And have systemless host active in Magisk. With supersu does not work.

I do not know if I remember the version of Magisk would be the 18 you can try downloading it from https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/releases . But first you would have to remove supersu https://download.lineageos.org/extras from the trwp if I'm not mistaken. Or from the supersu application itself.

What I advise you, or you could do is to upgrade your nexus 10. Installing lineageos, for example https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-lineageos-17-1-unofficial-nexus10-2021-05-10.3557735/ , https://www.getdroidtips.com/lineage-os-17-google-nexus-10/ , https://lineageosroms.com/manta/

If you upgrade it to 17 you could use Adaway version 5. If not in the version you are in and if Magisk is valid in that version (I think they already left it aside) you could use version 4 of adaway https://github.com/AdAway/AdAway/releases?after=v5.0.9b . And without doing anything else you should be fine. Neither with total comander or doing anything else.

So think about putting lineageos, so you give more life to the tablet.

A hug

Good afternoon @Ngovandang

Please correct me if I am wrong. But to block ads and so on. You should look in adaway in show dns. The ones that connect and block them. Or in firefox also in about:networking . In chrome I have no idea how to look at the connections.

But it gives me that what you want is to clean the web of banners and others. To do this I recommend using ublock origin. In which you can remove and so on to your liking. And instead of using chrone I would opt for a iceraven or fennec of fdroid. But that to taste, since these two that I tell you better allow you to use the compkementos for my.

But I don't know if a colleague can tell you if you can do what you want with adaway. The rest I can not tell you more, because as I said a moderator would be discrediting and out of the same thread.

A hug

Hey all! Just wanted to say thanks to the AdAway team for continuing to maintain this great application over the years, and to @gallegonovato for liking my project enough to suggest it be included as a default option in AdAway. I was planning on doing so *eventually* myself (with the *mini* variant of my hosts file), but wanted to slim it down and tweak it a bit more before I did, as - IIRC - AdAway has very specific standards for the default list selections, and rightly so.

In regard to @ipdev pointing out that my main hosts file was not updated for 6 days as of @gallegonovato's proposal, I recently had a family emergency which required a fair amount of travel, and forgot to sync the latest iteration of my backend scripts between my main computer and travel laptop (see more here: https://community.blokada.org/t/introducing-combined-privacy-block-lists/11657/5?u=bongochong) and will ensure that such an oversight never occurs again in the future. Much love.

Good afternoon @arnoldpalmernold

First of all I hope all is well in the family.

You don't have to thank me because I like your lists. Since I have to say that they are wonderful and very very very very complete.

And to say that I noticed a change for the better. Including ipv4, ipv6 or both together.

What I hope they include it at the end in Adaway. Since you deserve it and although I have already said it. Your lists can and will help a lot of people. And it would be together with Adaway a combination as they say in the press a bomb or splendid combination.

Thank you very much partner and thank you for all your work and effort.

Sorry to hear about a family emergency.
My best wishes to you and your family.

Personal life and family is always first.

--

Only mentioned that it was 6 days old as reference to the list version I tested at the time of my post.

I did not check the history to see how often you update it.
I was not sure if you did daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

Personally I use minimal blocking.
I did check again using the Combined New Hosts (six hours old as of this post), AdAway had no issues.
My Blocked list went from 20060 to 101866.

Cheers. :cowboy:

Thanks friend! Sorry if I came off defensively at all. Did not feel like you were attacking me or anything. I just wanted to clarify, because I've been making a point of doing at least biweekly updates for a while now. I actually felt guilty about not having all of my scripts handy when the one week mark hit 😬

Regards and kudos for your continuous work Sir :cheers: @PerfectSlayer

Just wanted to ask something about webserver issue on latest version. If I remember correctly, enabling webserver hid those ugly broken faces/links in place of ads with white blank space or ad away logo. But currently, this isn't working. Is it intended this way? Because previously, this was the only benefit of using webserver as I know.

Phone: S7 edge G935F
OS: One ui 2.5 android 10
Ad away ver : 5.6
Magisk ver : 23
Thanks!

About the web server, it serves two purposes:
* Help applications that need to get answer when their ads are blocked (some applications froze or crash otherwise)
* Remove some « ugly deading pixel in gray area » on your browser when ads blocked (it's currently limited to http ads and doubleclick (Google) https ads)

But it might also come with compatibility issues. For example, Amazon app is famous to dislike its answers... It was the same for Spotify broadcast few years ago.

Hii.. I didn't find how to whitelist an app, so that adaway doesn't work on that.. I see there is way to whitelist hostname, but how to know the hostname source urls of an app?? So that I could put that in whitelist!! Please help
You can whitelist apps only if you use non-root/VPN mode (not the root/hosts mode)

You must be on AdAway 5.x
If you are already using the root mode, you must uninstall and reinstall AdAway (or Wipe its Data from Settings, Apps) and configure it once again, this time choosing the VPN mode

Hi there, I have a redmi note 9s and since the last update to miui 12.0.2.0 RJWEUX, Adaway has stop to block any ads at all in apps or browser, I use Edge as a browser and I don't use data saver.
I tried to uninstall and reinstall but nothing works... It was ok few days ago but since the update... nothing works...
My 9s isn't rooted I use Adaway as VPN.
Thanks in advance.

Good afternoon:

I wanted to ask you for help, because I wanted to block in Adaway everything related to:

Twitter (whole and its ads)
Facebook (the same as before)
Instagram (idem)
Tiktok (idem)
Bitcoin and bitcoins
covid and covid19 (idem)
OpenCnam
Auskunft
OpenStreetMap
coronavirus (since some ads appear on the web, analytic)

I know, you could block everything that contains that with the * (if I remember correctly). But I don't know how to do it.

I don't know if you could tell me how to do it.

Thank you for your time and help.

    Hi all,

    It's been two months now from the last release.
    As previously said, I take a step back from the project (like many other things in my life) for recovery.
    Nonetheless, I still have few updates for you!

    The main one is a long time request depicted here:
    1624794632235.png

    So now, you should be able to quickly pause and resume ad-blocking from quick settings! 🎉
    And on top of that, there are bug fixes and dependencies and translation updates.

    In the meantime, I am discussing about an UI contribution to improve the home screen.
    I often get comments about the icons floating on top of cards. The proposal tries to fix it and add some colors while changing the overall theme contrast:

    Current version:
    121990827-154f5b00-cdbc-11eb-859c-343dadacefb1.png

    Proposal:
    121990535-8cd0ba80-cdbb-11eb-8719-652743259ce3.png

    Feel free to give your feedback as we are iterating on it (or even join the PR discussion).

    Changelog:
    • Add quick settings tile to toggle ad-blocking
    • Fix crash on TLS and timeout issue during source update
    • Fix backup not listed for restoration on older devices
    • Update dependencies
    • Update translations

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to gwolf2u, opusforlife2, Vstory for theirs helpful bug reports.

    Thank you very much for the latest update - and the quick settings addition is great.

    Question - is there also a way to toggle ad blocking from Tasker (or sending some intent) that could be used?

    Thanks again.

    You should be able to do it, I developed stuff to.

    AdAway exposes an Intent receiver "org.adaway.AD_BLOCK_STATUS" to take commands from other apps.
    XML:
            <receiver
                android:name=".broadcast.StatusCommandReceiver"
                android:permission="org.adaway.permission.STATUS_COMMAND">
                <intent-filter>
                    <action android:name="org.adaway.AD_BLOCK_STATUS" />
                </intent-filter>
            </receiver>

    And the receiver check the intent extra "org.adaway.AD_BLOCK_STATUS" to get the command to apply (0 for starting ad-blocking, 1 for stopping).

    Java:
    /**
    * This broadcast receiver listens to ad-blocking status change request.
    */
    public class StatusCommandReceiver extends BroadcastReceiver {
        /**
         * This action controls the ad blocking status.<br>See {@link AdBlockCommand} for extra values.
         */
        public static final String STATUS_COMMAND_ACTION = "org.adaway.AD_BLOCK_STATUS";
        private static final String TAG = "StatusReceiver";

        @Override
        public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
            if (STATUS_COMMAND_ACTION.equals(intent.getAction())) {
                Log.i(TAG, "StatusReceiver invoked");
                AdBlockModel adBlockModel = ((AdAwayApplication) context.getApplicationContext()).getAdBlockModel();
                AdBlockCommand command = AdBlockCommand.readFromIntent(intent);
                try {
                    switch (command) {
                        case START:
                            adBlockModel.apply();
                            break;
                        case STOP:
                            adBlockModel.revert();
                            break;
                    }
                } catch (HostErrorException e) {
                    Log.w(TAG, "Failed to apply ad block command " + command + ".", e);
                }
            }
        }
    }

    I don't have tasker to test it but if you suceed, don't forget to post it here the result so I can put it somewhere on the GitHub (Wiki?)

    I searched Magisk for the "Systemless hosts" module but it doesn't seem to be present with this name.
    There is no such module in the modules list to install. You need to activate systemless hosts via the Magisk App settings. Afterwards, the systemless hosts module will appear under the installed modules.

    thanks for you reply! but, I already did as you told me but the hosts still doesn't shows up.
    I just tried your babesid hosts source

    If Apply redirected hosts is not checked, it will give you 60 blocked sites

    If Apply redirected hosts is checked, it will give you 8k redirected sites and 60 blocked

    Disable all your other hosts sources, confirn Apply and give it a time to finish (!)

    Then enable only your Babesid source, Apply and give it again time to finish

    Play with that.
    My screenshots attached

    You will need to look into the Babeside Readme or something, what is its purpose of redirecting.
    So far I used various hosts sources but this is the first time now with Babeside that Adaway shows me the number of Redirected addresses greater than 0

    Edit:
    Actually, those 8k redirected sites look like entries to the dark-net. Most of them cannot be resolved by regular DNS servers, some resolve but to different IP addresses than redirected by Babesid (try to open in browser and you get "Site is seized by ..., by article this or that"), etc - hence be very carefull with

    AdAway

    AdAway is an open source ad blocker for Android using the hosts file.

    Google Play Store notice:

    According the Google Play Developer Policy, especially the "Device and Network Abuse" section, ad blocker like AdAway violates the "Apps that block or interfere with another app displaying ads." rule and can't be distributed on distributed on the Play Store.
    As Free and Open Source Software, AdAway is available from F-Droid Store or this XDA thread :good:

    Requirements:

    This application requires Android 8 or above and does no more require root.

    For older Android versions, a rooted device is required.

    Changelog:

    If you don't want to read each announce post of this thread, you can:

    Downloads:

    Stable versions are available on F-Droid Store and below:

    Beta versions are available on XDA development thread only:

    AdAway 5.0.10

    Problem? Read this:

    * If you use Chrome and still see ads on web pages, remember to disable the "data saver" or "reduced data usage" browser option
    * Check your APN settings for any proxy, the proxy itself could be allowing ads. Disable the proxy.
    * After you install or make any change to AdAway, you must reboot for those changes to take effect
    * If you are still having issues please read and understand all the info in the wiki before asking for help here

    Otherwise, this is the right thread to discuss about it or file a bug report here.

    Hi all,

    A new year is coming and I wish you all to have nice holidays :victory:

    Just few words about this ending year. There was about 12 releases in 2019 which brings you a new UI, a lot of bug fixes, Android 10 support, Gist and GitLab hosting support and better Magisk support.
    All of this is possible thanks to the community to help users to discover the app, learn how to use it and report any new bug and also your moral, nice words and thanks you can send to me, and financial support.
    Thanks a lot for all donators, GitHub sponsor and the Pixel 2 you sent me to test Android 10 support.

    For the next year, I hope to release the next version (V5), at least in beta to start. It's been 9 months since its first lines of code and things are working quite nicely.
    It aims to make the app simpler to use for the main use cases, support rooted and non rooted devices and remove old hacks/workaround which are no more needed on recent setups.

    But before this big next update, I still have time to fix current issue with a new release :p

    Changelog:
    • Fix GitLab hosting support (commit date parsing failed)
    • Translation update

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to @gallegonovato for its helpful bug report and @Vankog for translation update.

    Hi all,

    Long time no see! It's been more than two months since the last update.
    I can't say I was not active on the project as I start working on a new version (5.x.y) as a side project.
    I won't share the source code yet as it is not ready at all and I don't want to give an ETA but this new version targets the following goals:
    • 1. Revamp the UI
    • 2. Clean up old support
    • 3. Address one of the main drawback of the app

    1. The card based UI does not feel right. Welcome card takes too much space, update button / status has a lot of critic. I guess I can do better.
    I started a new simpler and lighter design which provide the most useful information on home screen and all main actions to trigger in one tap (no more burger menu).
    It is still under heavy development but I hopefully get a friend onboard, specialized in graphics and design, to help me :highfive:

    2. In order to simplify the development, I clean up the app and remove support for old features.
    I bump target SDK version so I finally get Java 8 language feature (it was released 5y ago…) and move to topjohnwu root library (instead of home made one). It means systemless support is now handled by Magisk and other root solutions will still work.

    3. Think of what prevent most of users to use AdAway? Now it's gone!
    It's not gone forever. It's still here but there will be a fallback to workaround it.
    I won't tell more until the first public beta but I guess you get the point :fingers-crossed:

    In the meanwhile, here is a new version!

    Feedback:

    Is anyone using a hosts list hosted on Gitlab? It keeps showing "Unknown update status".
    GitLab, like GitHub do not set LastModified HTTP header so update status is not supported... yet!

    Changelog:
    • Add Gist and GitLab hosting support for hosts file
    • Add option to set default IPv6 redirection
    • Improve reboot command
    • Improve UI for overlays
    • Update translations

    Thanks:

    Special thanks to @MSF Jarvis and ralayax for theirs contributions and @andy356 for its helpful bug report.

    Hi all,

    Feedback:

    Hmm, not working for me for this URL, v4.1.0 shows something like not updated in -360 days (some large negative value). Can you please see if you can reproduce?
    https://raw.githubusercontent.com/StevenBlack/hosts/master/alternates/fakenews-gambling-porn/hosts
    It works well here. I failed to reproduce as I change the HTTP client library and how I use it.
    But update date for the source you link definitely works now.

    All the F-Droid apps I know of have manual push updates to the store.

    Isn't automatic build basically for nightlies?
    Not really. You could choose a lot of different mode.
    For example, F-Droid server watches AdAway GitHub repository to find tags which match a specific versioning pattern.

    I exist still... do you know what i have to do to transfer ownership? if i edit project it doesn't let me change the primary author so i assume i have to PM some higher up to make this happen?
    Thank you so much! :highfive:

    This is now done, @PerfectSlayer is the OP of this thread.
    Thank you too!

    Changelog:

    Hi all,

    After receiving a lot of bug reports about the translation issue with the menu drawer, I finally take time to try to fix it (my holidays just start ;))
    So I fix all incomplete string-array issues the best I could (I can't really understand all languages the app has) but you should get at least all menu entries.
    If some of them are switched or mislabeled, it could be fixed by a translation update. I hope it will encourage translators to patch it when needed (whereas a missing entry could be easily missed).

    I also improve the "not enough space" dialog error.
    It will now display a more detailed message, like failed to mount as rw, which leads to no space to write hosts file.

    Finally, I removed the telemetry startup message (for F-Droid opt-in users only) to replace them by app update only.
    It allows me to understand which versions of the app are installed on which Android platforms.
    (let's say there is a new target version available and I would like to know if I should spend hours to migrate right now or wait few months until more dev feedback becomes available ^^')

    Changelog:
    • Improve hosts file parsing
    • Improve hosts file install error message (add more details than not enough space)
    • Fix menu drawer translation issue
    • Update translations
    • Replace startup (opt-in only) telemetry messages by app update only

    Thanks:
