My block list check boxes is greyed out and I can't white list it. I already have systemless host enable in Magisk. Please help I need to white list a link. The show DNS request log when I press record and I open an app or visit a link it does not show anything.

You probably use VPN/non root mode (it's very important to describe when posting issues because VPN and hosts/root modes work totally different) and VPN maybe blocks the Internet (there are some known issues with VPN mode when switching connections and so)

But check also something else. Certain apps cannot work if VPN is enabled - you have to whitelist those apps

Unfortunately, it's known (you can search through the older posts and/or look at the Github) about the issues with VPN.
Maybe consider rooting the phone and the hosts mode

You have to delete data for AdAway (from Settings, Apps) or uninstall and then install the AdAway again.
Then you have a choice to choose

If you need, you can export all your hosts sources and White lists to json and later to import them back

Btw, I'm sure I answered the same to somebody else

Anyway, it would be good to have a more practical option to switch between the modes

I have to admit, I have not re-read the OP, but I would hazard a guess it would be in the top few posts. And you and others have answered the question many times.

As for a practical option to switch between the modes, are people doing this often? I did it once myself, in that I tested the VPN mode (on my new, rooted phone), but once I found it wasn't working / problematic, I switched to root mode, and have never wished to switch back. I could be way out, but it seems like a feature that would not be used often. Would you use it more than twice? ie start with option 1, test option 2, realise it was better in option 1, and go back and STAY on option 1; as you now know it is better. I cant understand the reason to be switching between the two multiple times?

True. But according to the questions posted, there are still users who want to switch from one mode to another (and they look for but cannot find such a switch in AdAway Preferences)

There will be usually two scenarios (as you say), with only one or two times switching:

1) Users who later rooted their phones and want to switch from non-root to root (one time only)

2) Users who want to try/switch from root to non-root (because of e.g. the ability in VPN mode to whitelist per apps). But later, due to the VPN mode issues with data reconnections, they want to go back to the root mode (hence two times switching)

Those from the case (1) should have a little imagination, remembering that when they first time configured AdAway 5.x, that they had a choice to choose between root and non-root - hence they should be able to figure out themselves (as we did) that if they Clear data, they would again be in the initial position to choose between the modes

However, in case (2) there might be people who upgraded from AdAway 4.x (where only the root mode existed) hence they never went though the initial configuration of AdAway 5.x, and never saw how/where you choose between the modes

But it just work on chrome web browser, doens't work on apps, like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram or any App that has Ads.

Please read here and elswhere (search, read older posts, history does not begin when a new member stumbles into the thread) how and why AdAway (and other dns based adblockers) do not block ads in YT and what to use instead (Vanced)

YT pushes their ads through the A/V stream you play, hence they cannot be blocked by blocking certain DNS or IP addresses

Btw, Vanced has also the root and non-root versions (substantially different)

Yes, I just discovery the root and non-root version of YT Vanced, and the "Search in the thread". Thanks for the support.
(btw, I think tiktok uses the same way to pushes their ads. And there is already versions of it without ads.)

You should be able to do it, I developed stuff to.

AdAway exposes an Intent receiver "org.adaway.AD_BLOCK_STATUS" to take commands from other apps.

Well - after lots of head scratching, this is what I came up with.

I was not successful in figuring out a tasker broadcast command to turn ad blocking on/off. If anybody has a shell script that would do this - please let me know what it would be and I think I would be able to use that in tasker - either as a shell command or to figure out the tasker broadcast command that would be used.

What it did find is - using the information from https://android.stackexchange.com/q...sing-another-applications-quick-settings-tile, the following command will toggle adaway.

cmd statusbar click-tile org.adaway/.tile.AdBlockingTileService

This command can be executed via adb (in a terminal emulation session) or via the tasker shell command. I found that I had to execute as root when executing from tasker.

On my device, I found that I didn't need to expand the quick settings tiles before executing, but (per the article) that may vary.

This (toggle) is not as useful as a command to turn on/off, but it is something - and I figured it may be of help to others.

Again, if anybody has a shell script command that will work, that would be most useful.

Thank you! I have not activated the proxy server and the data saving and I do not use another app to block the ads, then the other things I do not know. However in private dns I added "dns.adguard.com" and now it seems that no advertising opens on the browser.
Can you recommend the best hosts source (one or two very large that blocks many ads) to add to the default ones on adaway?

I had this same painful and confusiong issue a while back, and what I found was that when I switched to mobile data, the network used a different interface and DNS servers / connection which apparently bypassed my hosts file. It was a while back now, but I think I solved it by changing some DNS settings for the many networks on the device.

Attached is an OOOOOLD boot script that I think use to work for my specific device. There are includes, but they mainly have to do with logging, and $bb is "busybox"

Adaway 5.7.0 Non-Root Blocks Gmail Attachments​

Samsung S8+ on Android 9, Stock, No root. Very few apps installed. When Adaway VPN is active, no attachments are seen in gmail incoming messages. If the attachment is inline, you see nothing at all. If the attachment is a file, you see that there is an attachment, but any attempt to view it or download it fails. Deactivate VPN and all works file.

I have checked the list of blocked items for "gmail" and "google". I see some things that appear to spoof the domain names. Not sure where these attachment files might be located.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
