I will try to explain myself better. The web server is always disabled in the Adaway settings.

I am not referring to the download or update time of the host lists.

I mean for example a friend has 3113742 things blocked in total. And after the host lists are updated and so on. Adaway puts creating hosts, but it shuts down in process.

Although I can't really say close at all either, since it closes the main screen. But a few times if you go to see the apps open in the background there's Adaway there. But most of the time it doesn't.

It's like it chokes when creating the hosts.

Pd: other people also comment me if it can be, that the fonts that Adaway has by default or those that it brings by default. I don't know if they can come without activation. Or unchecked the option to automatically check for and install updates. Since it creates a host, which then adds to the other things blocked.

Why you block million of things, when you surf the most time on the same sites?
It costs CPU power and at end battery.

I would like to make a suggestion to improve Adaway. I have heard from several people I know.

I don't know if Adaway could be made to work better with a large number of things blocked.

Since some people I know have more than three million things blocked. And Adaway closes them just by creating the host.

Pd: use the latest version of Adaway in root mode and Magisk and systemless.

If using root version, take eg MiXPlorer and you will see that /system/etc/hosts file with your 3M blocked sites should be about 150-200 MB (half of that if IPv6 is disabled)

Android has to read that (at the boot time) and cache. For old devices with small RAM it kills the system.
Android (not AdAway) processes that hosts file and for every URL it has to search through by using (I guess) like binary search algorithm to check if the given URL is in your 3M entries list

Only if using non-root/VPN then AdAway itself (not Android) searches through the list (but in that case the list is not in the /system/etc/hosts file)

That's about the run-time usage. The other part is updating the hosts files and sorting the list before saving - that can really take several minutes (but I would recommend to disable automatic updates and to update only manually every few days when you have time to wait 3-5 minutes until it finishes)

However, I doubt how useful is your 3M blocked sites list. Mine is 10 times smaller and I have no problem with ads.
Probably from your 3M -mine 300K = your 2.7M excess sites, you open some of them only once a month or so. Hence they mostly waste your memory (time and battery for processing)

Same like me. I use the standard lists and have no problems with ads, on my 20 standard sites I visit.

I'll one up that and say that i travel to a lot of random news sites (some more reputable than others) and have 0 ads. I only have steven black, pete low, adaway (source) and mvps (which is already included in steven black so probably adds zero)

Hello everyone, I have been using adaway for years. I have recently upgraded my device to Oxygen 13 and it appears the adaway isn't working properly. My Blocklist has around 7 lakh hosts and I have checked in system path and it has the same number too. However the blocked sites still show up in chrome. I have disabled webserver too. Am I missing anything?

Are adds blocked in other apps?
Are adds let though on WiFi and Mobile Data?

Ok Ads are not there in other apps when AdAway is enabled. I think it's only issue with the chrome.

As to why it has so many things blocked, well, I can't tell you. I don't know: privacy, security, or because he wants it that way.

I know that for example, he has a lot of blocks to Google, Facebook, Twiter, Amazon, etc... And a lot of telemetry and security things. And browser with user.js and ublock.

Do not take me wrong this answer, but I can not say why it has so many things, only that it will be for some mania or something.

It also uses a windows lite, without a lot of Microsoft stuff and a host with a lot of blocked stuff. It's not really his main system, as he uses Linux Mint. But for Admin stuff, it works better on Windows.

He never complained about a big battery drain or anything. Until recently this has been happening with Adaway. And he's been using Adaway for a lot of years, along with lineageos with no microg or Google stuff.

I just told him that I didn't know why this was happening to him recently, that Adaway was closed by creating the host, and that since he was registered here, I was going to tell you about it. And so I let you know, to see if it can be done.

Use one of the best browsers, kiwi or brave.
I recommend kiwi.

Hi Thanks for this amazing ads blocker app. I have been using the root based one for years and loving it. Now I am usig the non root one, so far so good. But I have one problem, how do I use adaway along with cloudfare dns? I still want to use adaway and also cloudfare dns? is it possible? because when I set my private DNS to cloudfare and activate the adaway, I have problem with my internet not able to access anything.

Hey there.. So i am an Adaway user from quite some time now like 4-5 years i guess. Never faced any problem what so ever. But recently I've been facing this weird issue on my both devices. I have source updates available but when i tap download button i always get this error.

Then maybe something is wrong with your - you didn't provide any info about that

There's isn't any much info to provide. I have used the app from many many years. This is first time I'm facing this issue.

I'm using oos11, device is OnePlus 8T (Android 11) , Adaway version 6.0.3, And i just installed fresh apk and selected "root" as always.

I advised you to inspect your Hosts sources. You can enable/disable each one, then Apply the change and inspect which one cannot load

Also, advised you to copy/paste their URLs to the browser to test which one cannot open. Maybe that hosts source is dead, hence cannot be updated from, etc

On my screenshots you have hints to see what I mean, but then you need to play yourself

Or you can wipe the Cache and Data for AdAway and configure it again or equivalently uninstall and install the AdAway again - maybe the problem will solve by itself

Thanks for making a detailed reply. I did what you adviced and i found something, i check my sources. They are : Adaway Offical hosts, Pete Lowe blocklists hosts and StevenBlack Unified hosts.

So this last source is the one causing problem. I disabled it and rest are working fine. Also are there other sources which you recommed to add?
