Are foreign roms considered safe?

I hope this doesn't come off as dickish or ignorant... but I'm wondering if there are any concerns about installing roms originating from other countries (particularly MIUI from China). Would we know if there was malware built into these roms?

I've never read anything bad about flashing these roms, and I hope the question is not offensive.

Flashing any rom from a different carrier/device model can and will mess up your phone. At the very least it would need to be ported to work on your specific device 7 carrier. If flashing international roms worked out of the box we would not be seeing ports. so don't flash an international rom because you will be finding yourself doing a bunch of things in order to get your phone working again. The rom MUST be ported before it will work on a different device & carrier. Some gsm roms might be more compatible but you will be better off avoiding international roms unless it is has been ported correctly and the dev specifically states it is for your specific device & carrier.
