The first thing you should address to noobs is that questions go in Q&A ;)

I accept thats where noobs go first, just like I did, however some answers are too technical and really need to be less techie and may less with Jargon. Like previous poster there is still confusions on some jargon. May be a thread with all the Jargon and its meaning would be immensely help.

Thank you all for your help, the fog is getting thinner...

I've got a Sprint GS3 that's rooted & I'm getting a notification that I have a system update that wants to install. Of course when I let it try I get the Dead android with the triangle and the install fails. Fortunately I can reboot and it's back to where it was before, then a day or so later I start getting the notification to install it again. It's very annoying and I want to either install this update or somehow get rid of it so it will stop asking me. Any suggestions? The update is 81.5MB and is not a firmware update but a Samsung Software update.

Minne"snow" dah!
Not a noob, just new to GS3

Hello!

Just picked up one of these here Sprint GS3's, haven't even activated it yet. Coming from a rooted Galaxy Nexus CM10. Might be just were I live or just my luck, but this GS3 has really fast wifi compared to the GenNex. Can't wait to activate it. :) The battery life thus far is friggen amazing. IMHO.

I sort of like touch wiz, (sounds like my first time, all alone in the dark and scared. lol) maybe the novelty of that will wear off in due time.

Anyhoo. Going to read up on flashing a stock rooted rom so I can remove the sprint apps if such a thing exists?

Thanks in advance for conversations and the thread, I thumbed it up to the OP. ;) Cheers

Extract it from the rom zip?
If you still have the Blazer rom zip then open it up on your computer and extract the wallpaper from /system/app/
Then put the apk on your phone and move it to /system/app/ directory and make permissions match.
ADB method:
open command prompt and...
adb remount
adb push wallpaper.apk /system/app/
adb shell
su
cd /system/app/
chmod 644 wallpaper.apk

Root browser method: (use Rom Toolbox)
put the wallpaper.apk on your sd card
open root browser and browse to your sd card
long press the apk and press move
browse back to root and then to system and then app
press the move button
long press again and press permissions
Read Write Execute
x x
x
x
and press ok
You're good to go.

I am still stuck on step zero because my life is almost 100% side quests :)

I see recommendations all over for Titanium backup...

But... do you guys know of a backup solution that will basically image the entire phone (internal memory, microsd, all of it including os, apps, documents, files, contacts, email settings, calendar, music, photos, videos, EVERYTHING)? BEFORE I even root it?

Thanks for any suggestions you might offer.

EDIT: anyone ever try using the SDK for this per www.newsflaps.com/2012/09/28/create-full-android-phone-tablet-backup-rooting/

Yup, it's called nandroid or system back up ;) It's done in recovery, both CWM and TWRP have this. Depending on which method you use it'll be part of the process.

Okay your Google account will backup your contacts, calendar, etc. The media files will be on your internal and external storage and won't be erased unless you erase it but you're more than welcome to backup on your PC if you'd like before rootingd and flashing a rom. As for your apps the best app you're going to find is Rom Toolbox Pro. Go to App Manager and backup all user apps. When you flash a new rom you will sign in to your Google account, restoring your contacts, etc. Download Rom Toolbox again if you have to and go back to App Manager and restore all apps and select apps+data and restore. Boom! New rom, nothing missing.

Yeah that wallpaper won't work on AOSP roms. Must be TouchWiz. Sorry, I missed the CM part. But now you know how to do it. :victory:

Hmm, I mostly use Exchange server, but there are some bits that my Google account will have. If I trust our home network administrator that data is safely mirrored as well. That's a big if, though, the server is kind of a sandbox for my techie hubster.

I guess mostly I just don't trust anyone else to have my data for me before I embark on a process where if I do something boneheaded it could get blown away. Because I do boneheaded stuff ALL THE TIME.

Still, thanks for the suggestions, you guys! As soon as I get to my PC I will be following up and choosing a course of action.

Then back everything up to your internal storage. Rom Toolbox Pro will backup your apps + data to your SD card. When flashing a new rom the only way you can wipe out your storage is if you manually press the button that says "Wipe Internal Storage" or "Wipe SD" and I refuse to believe you're boneheaded enough to do THAT!

I am not a n00b but do not feel this warrants a new thread. I rooted my wifes gs3 on day one and deleted a bunch of the bloatware myself. As a result the phone has never ever been updated. All of the OTA updates fail since it is missing certain stock .apk files. It has never been a big deal since she is not a power user and just wants the phone to work. Well now she has reason to use Google wallet but gets this message "Unfortunately, Google Wallet is not yet available for your device or mobile network." It used to work but now it doesn't. My best guess is that since it is running an older version of TW that it won't let her use Google Wallet. Can I update her phone to the most recent OTA manually without wiping everything? She'd be pissed if she had to reset up everything. You all know how women are.

Edit: I believe this is what I was looking for here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KeZx65twLk

I personally still use an original epic so not knowing what all the updates are called for the s3 was making it difficult to search for the right thing.

anyone else have trouble with the palm swipe screen shot?
Trouble? If by trouble you mean every time I palm swipe my phone the SCREEN MOVES UP AND F****** DOWN and takes a screenshot of the wrong part of the screen then yes, I'm having trouble. If by trouble you mean it's not working then go to System Settings, Motion, and check Palm swipe to capture to enable it. Or... if by trouble you mean you just can't get it to work hold your hand like you're about to karate chop your phone and then drag just the side of your hand across your phone.
