Hi.
Installing a custom ROM on my OnePlus 6.
I've unlocked the bootloader and taken a full backup with TWRP.

1. The (4-year-old) guide I'm following says that EFS partition corruption may occur, and describes a manual process for backing it up (gain root access and run dd if=/dev/block/sdf2 of=/sdcard/modemst1.bin bs=2048 and the same for modemst2), however the TWRP backup contains the EFS partition, so I believe this is unnecessary. Am I correct in this?
2. Do I need to root my phone if I'm flashing a custom ROM anyway? Won't the custom ROM have root access by default?

It doesn't hurt to have two ways to restore such sensitive partitions, beyond that, some partitions are not restored correctly through a method over another one. With those backups, you can restore them using different methods (fastboot and EDL + recovery) that TWRP uses.
2. Do I need to root my phone if I'm flashing a custom ROM anyway? Won't the custom ROM have root access by default?

Leto2112.
No, and no. You don't need to root your device in order to can flash a custom ROM, and custom ROMs, usually don't come rooted by default.

Okay. New issue. I flashed TWRP, and then tried to restore my TWRP backup. Didn't work. I then wiped everything and tried to install my custom ROM, but got:
Error applying update: 7 (ErrorCode : : kInstallDeviceOpenError)
To flash additional zips, please reboot recovery to switch to the updated slot.

No matter what I do (reflash TWRP, reboot into slot A,B), I can't flash the custom ROM and get this error message.
I managed to flash the boot.img, but that wasn't useful.
Also, I can only send files across by adb push now, because the normal mtp file transfer is borked except just after I do fastboot -w and ./fastboot boot twrp-whatever
Argh!

E: Turns out the flashing instructions for my chosen ROM negate the need to sort this out. Followed the steps, it all works now.

Why nowaday's phone in 2023 has very simple animation during intro / startscreen? In Xiaomi, in Samsung, it just show logo, then immediately to homescreen. When shut down, the logo fading out.

Back in 2011. Smartphone's start screen logo is aesthetic. Like Samsung that bursting its logo from sparkle to its ovally horizontal logo. In 2015, it changed to be more simplified. Samsung logo being drawn but without its iconic oval this time.

Now, its logo animation just popped and fading out. Maybe because it's not worth it anymore? Or is it to reduce time cost to boot up the phone?

What do I need to change for my mobile communication no longer has access to the pop up message that appears on my cell phone screen through the SimToolkit Chip?

Should I change the rom, kernel, or something to stop showing pop up from SimToolkit messages that my mobile communication makes appear on my phone screen?
This makes the screen stay on until the battery dies or until I hit cancel =S

Is rom, kernel, or something?

SimToolkit isn't an app? If it is, then you can enter to the settings of the app, and clear cache/data, disable access, and disable notifications from, a further step would be "deleting" it from the user's sight, using pm command.

Phone stuck in Start-Logo after update

hello, I made an update from 0.21 to 1.7 /e/os and when the phone has restarted came message ,qualcomm crashdump mode". I then wanted to bring handy in recovery mode, but it came the normal recovery not twrp, then I have fastboot mode on and tried to flash twrp with PC (that did not work). I then changed to slot a (fastboot --set-active=a) and then i started recovery mode and then twrp came. I couldn’t see any data from the phone, not even that system is installed(in wipe there is only: Dalvik/ART Cache, metadata, Data, Internal Storage, Usb Storage and Vendor) and the size is not there either. I then tried to start the system from twrp and waited 2 hours and all the time it loaded (so the E logo with the dot at the bottom). What can I do?
The phone is OnePlus 7 Pro and it was rooted.

Reflash your stock firmware. Google search:

"Return to stock (your model number)"

That should find links to firmware, tools and instructions.

Then start over with what you were trying to do but this time do more research and be more certain of what you are doing Don't do anything that you are not 100% sure of.

Hello guys..:)
I would like you to go through XDA new users guide and you must read the FORUM RULES before posting here or anywhere else on xda.

The rate at which the new users are joining xda on daily basis is very high. A lot of users join because they have got some problems with their devices like bricked phone, bootloops etc. because of following incorrect processes. Some join to help out others, to share their knowledge and gain more.

So basically this thread is for all of those who want to ask questions and answer those.

So those who want to help here, just try to answer without flaming, let it be answered thousands of times earlier, show them the path, direction and let them do things on their own. Do not spoon feed, rather just try to point them to right direction.

This whole idea is of @undercover and the former OP Bruce Wayne and I thank him.

To The people asking questions here, don't forget to check for the links from 2nd post. That will help you increase your knowledge, and do answer the questions asked by others if you know the answer. Please don't simply say thanks if some member helps you, instead use the thanks button, that will help us keep this thread less cluttered.

I can't find where to ask a question, so I'll briefly ask you. I made the mistake of buying a China Clone phone it's an ALPS MIX 4. All the specs are a lie and I can't get my $$ back. What I want to know is there any ROOT, UNLOCK BOOTLOADER (if there is one) and FLASH CUSTOM ROM for this phone??? I've searchered for a month and can't seem to find anything. The processor says it's a MT

I can't figure out how to ask a question, so I'll ask it here. (Sorry) I made the mistake of buying a cheap (actually it was $130) China rip off phone and I can't get my $$ back. All it's specs are a lie. It is an ALPS MIX 4. What I want to know is if there is any way to ROOT, UNLOCK BOOTLOADER (if there is one-I can't het it to go into Fastboot mode, just regular system recovery type list) or to FLASH A CUSTOM ROM to make it better.?? I've looked for months and can't find anything on it (Only the Mi Mix 4-The REAL one) Could you please help me out as soon as you can? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. And once again, I'm sorry for putting this here and wasting your time. Sincerely Boyd LaRue.

Just guessing which exact model or which exact Android version it is running actually your device, It's very hard to know what you could put on it.

Again, just guessing, your device is most probably a MTK 6580, no LTE, only 3G capable, running Lollipop as much.
You can realize, in some way, checking the UI, in some details, which Android version is actually running, to be sure.

Older MTK devices had a pre-menu to enter, either to fastboot or recovery (very unresponsive), from device off, press the three buttons, after 3 seconds approx, release the PWR button, and keep pressing both volume buttons, if you can see the three options in that menu, you have to navigate with vol. up and confirm with vol. down. Also setting the ADB connection properly, you could send device to fastboot, just using commands.

Once in fastboot, most likely, you can unlock the bootloader, then you, could at least, root the device using Magisk.

With this tool, you can pull the boot image, to patch it with Magisk, and also have a back-up of your device, in case you need it, at some time, https://github.com/bkerler/mtkclient

Unfortunately, you can't use fastboot in a locked Xiaomi device, instead you can try with MiAssistant through the stock Recovery.

For the next, you should disable system auto update.

You can install this version, it seems there is not available other than in Chinese language, so you should follow the on-screen instructions similar as the pictures here https://new.c.mi.com/global/post/97318

You can enter in recovery mode, by pressing -from a device off- the PWR and the volume + buttons, at same time, when you see the Mi logo, then release the PWR buttons, but keep pressing the other, till you see the Mi recovery menu (the Global version is in English).

Connect your device to the PC, and see its thing in Mi assistant, it will pick the better ROM for you, and it´ll try to flash it.

Hi,

Please I need help. Some days ago I successfuly rooted my phone with magisk.

All was running ok but after some days, when trying to do a small change to the /system/etc/init/hw/init.rc with root explorer, accidentally cleared the contents of the init.rc

Now I have an empty init.rc and dont know how to recover it.

The phone is still connected, working and fully charged.

From what I understood, if I reboot the V20 without init.rc it will bricked right? The ADB/Fastboot depends on the init.rc I think... right?

Since the phone is on and still working, can I do a Magisk uninstall to recover it?

Will Magisk uninstall recover boot and ramdisk with all files including stock init.rc or will this brick my phone?

Thank you for your help

Hello, I am new to your forums, and I hope I am posting this in the right place.
I'm wondering if anyone has access to a "mobogenie" installer.
I have a 16gb Hipstreet Phoenix (not rooted) that is in a boot loop, because the update corrupted.
I've been led to believe that mobogenie will look up the tablet automatically, and apply any needed ROM or flashing or something.
any help, or direction towards help would be appreciated.
From what I know, Mobogenie is (was?) just a kind of Android manager/bridge between your PC and a smartphone, it can´t flash/install/update any form of firmware.

Instead, you should search for a reliable firmware for your device, and search for a tool that can flash it, according the processor it has.

Firstly, you should try by booting to the recovery stock, and making wipes, and if needed, formatting data, trying to fix it.
    1
Hello, and thank you for the reply.
I (as well as others) can't seem to find the original firmware.
hipstreet has no download section containing anything useful (at least as far as I could figure, I am a novice afterall)
However, the processor seems to be a "1.6GHz Quad Core CPU processor".

The reason I had asked specifically about Mobogenie was because another user in an XDA thread said it was pretty much a one shot problem solver.
This is the thread I'm talking about.

I'm not sure if linking is allowed, but it's an XDA link, so I figured it wouldn't violate the sites TOS

However, when I boot up the tablet, it gives me the Hipstreet H screen (which i assume is bios), waits a few seconds, proceeds to the next splash screen saying "Hipstreet Phoenix" which i assume is it preparing to load its OS.. then it goes to a screen saying "android is upgrading" with a looping circle symbolizing loading, with text that says "starting apps".

seems like progress, however it doesn't get past this screen.
I have left it for several hours to see if maybe it would bypass it, but nothing yet.

I tried using android recovery too, and after using all available options, I can only get back to the point I mentioned about it "starting apps" and not going further.

I apologize for the long post, but I figure if I'm able to get any advice, I should provide all info I can.

Thank you all for your help.
Apart from what it says the tittle, all the thread is focused in the goal to achieve root in this device, it may be, primarily, because, either, in the old days, some specific firmware were not friendly with rooting, or they need to get the kernel from the stock firmware, in order to inject su binaries into it. I found nothing about flashing a ROM.

From what I remember, many years back, I installed this app, but in order to have what they claim to do, manage, share and transfer files from and to, Android and PC, apart of offer a kind of app store, but it resulted in many problems, not entirely sure, but it seems, it contained a troupe of virus, so I formatted and reinstalled the OS, in order to recover my PC, (success).

I assume, that you mean for "all available options" that you did in recovery, that you formatted data?

Also, you can try to boot to fastboot and make fastboot -w then try to boot.
