Can you snap a quick pic of the gap? I just watched the 3 Youtube reviews posted previously and didn't see a gap although he didn't focus on the sides of the phone. If you have a store nearby with a P5 on display I'd head over there and compare and send it to Google if they try to blow you off.

The specialist has said it's not right. Offered a replacement, then offered an advanced replacement.

Not sure whether to do it, or just return for a full refund.

Another P5 with the gap issue here...

EE have agreed to send out another tomorrow but doesn't appear to be a widely reported issue yet according to them. It is really hard to see though unless you look closely so might not have been noticed by others, I only saw it after checking after reading the OP.

Got a feeling the replacement will probably be the same though, not keen on having a phone with such a gap as it's already gathering dust and stuff...

Advanced replacement is the way to go I feel. If you like the device then give it one more shot and then if it's still messed up go for the full refund. I think if you go for the full refund then you will need another device and you'll wait for the refund to hit your CC. You could probably go to a store and take a look at the phone before you pay and then send the defective one back for the refund. Damn that sucks.
edit: I just took a look at the unboxing again and the side with the power button is very clear and there is no gap whatsoever. So I just think it's a bad batch and the replacement will be fine. (hopefully!)

Yeah, I'm actually wondering if it's just normal? Like I said mine seems uniform and I'd have never have looked if the OP hadn't flagged this.

Same feeling re: replacement.

It is the way to go yeah, but, I ordered the device from Amazon, so if I RMA with Google Amazon aren't going to be taking the replacement back, therefore I can't get a full refund.l.

I think I see. lol So if Google sends you an advanced replacement and that one is messed up too then Amazon won't give you a refund because it's basically a different device than what they sold you? Will Amazon give you a full refund? I'm also wondering if all that have the gap bought it from Amazon as well. Do you have the option of returning for full credit to Amazon and then buying from Google? The only issue with that is you'll be out another $600 or so until the refund hits.

That's it. I wouldn't expect Amazon to take it back as it's not the device they provided.

I could do that. Send it back and order direct from Google, just not sure if I can be bothered with it. Can see the replace being a mess too, or the device direct from Google!

Edit: Delivery from Google wouldn't be until 17th Nov

The nice thing about buying from Google is that they will give you advanced replacement if anything goes wrong during the warranty period. But as the devices go out (3 months or so) then they become refurbs which you don't want. I can't believe that if you buy it from Google the problem will be there again. I mean it's probably worth one last shot at it but naturally that is your call. Still it sucks no matter what you do.

edit: Nov 17 yikes!. Is there a store nearby that sells them like a Best buy or something? Your carrier perhaps? I think that no matter what you should return it to Amazon for full refund. Do you have a spare P3 or P4?

Once again, curious if all the devices that are flawed came from Amazon. Did any Google store bought devices have this problem?

So no one actually wants to attempt fixing it by just squeezing the gap with two fingers for a minute or so and rather have the phone replaced? I mean it doesn't seem to be a rare issue so what are the odds your replacement phone wont be the same? Or is it about ip68?

Idk why ppl come in here trying to make excuses for this issue. We shouldn't have to squeeze anything to fix anything. Problem should not be there to begin with. If u have no input in this matter please see dont post.

How am I trying to make excuses? Of course we shouldn't have to fix it ourselves. But if it's just a matter of a minute I'd rather fix it myself than going through a replacement process. And I don't want to return it all together either. Maybe someone does appreciate this "fix" too?

It's an obvious manufacturing issue. You can always wait for the 4th or so batch of Pixel 5 until it's fixed.

I'll keep mine and will still have the option of a future RMA because of this.

Ahh jeez....

I thought I didn't have this issue but then I looked a little closer. Same issue - top left.

It's only a small gap but for a one day old £600 device, that's not great.

I just spoke to Google and sent them the images.

Even though it's minor, they said it is considered damage (not a manufacturing defect) so I need to reach out to the retailer ?*♂️

I pointed them to this thread (implying a manufacturing defect) but they said that, because it's online, they can't validate the authenticity of the claims and photos.

This doesn't help either, different support agents saying different things.

I sent them images, they checked with a specialist and said it was a defect.

They need to make their mind up, issue a statement as to whether this is normal or not.

Bought Pixel5 from Carphone Warehouse 4 days ago. Yesterday I noticed that gap and took it back to the shop, they agreed to send me a new one. The new also has the gap but smaller. Don't know what to do because £600 device should not be assembled like that. Also, no idea how the replacement will affect BOSE promo.

So either this is a mass manufacturing issue or its perfectly normal?

Yeah not sure regarding the promo.

Also got mine from Carphone Warehouse - glad to hear they're handling this well!

This is what is putting me off getting it replaced. I low-key suspect this is a manufacturing defect affecting most phones and it's just that we're the only ones looking close enough to see it.

I'd be happy just to leave it as is but according to Google reps, there shouldn't be any gaps and this is considered damage/defective.

I was thinking the same. Just leave it and see how it goes. My biggest fear is water or moisture. Second fear is dust and crap getting stuck.in there.

Wasn't this an issue with the HTC U11 too?

So if my phone gets messed up after 2 minutes from sitting in a bowl of 5cm of water, then I think I have a valid case for full refund/replacement.
Water damage is not covered under any standard manufacturer warranty.

There is a safer way to do the testing.

I've put together an app that lets you test your phone's IP67/IP68 water resistance seals without dunking it in water. This will both help people have confidence in their phones' water resistance capabilities while also giving a way for people to hold manufacturers and repair shops accountable.

This app works by using the barometer built in to your phone. Do note that the seals can become compromised with drops and device aging - keep your phone away from all liquids!

    Download from the Play Store:

    Demo videos:

    • Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra US (factory water resistance, intact):
    • Samsung Galaxy A32 5G US (no factory water resistance):
    • Google Pixel 2 (factory water resistance, intact):
    • Google Pixel 3 XL (factory water resistance intact, and also tested with SIM tray removed):

No problem here. Definitely your phone is not waterproof.
    It's a new phone, I wouldn't accept this if I were you.
    Let them fix/replace it.
