Asus fixing the Nexus 7

My c7 after 11 days, lifted. Gonna throw it back at staples tomorrow for a replacement or refund and the batch will determine it. I haven't seen as many of the c8 batch being bad. So if they can provide me a c8, I'll probably grab it up. If not; I'll probably get a refund and wait and get one when the batches are proved fixed. I trust asus will fix the problem since it is google they are building for. Though I haven't been a fan of their pc hardware for quite a while. But i can assume that if they fail for the goog, they probably will never build for the goog again. I'll update and let you know what comes of the replacement.

Just so you know, i don't even game on this thing. Never really got it hot. I'd probably have some serious lift if i did though. Mine is slight now but I'm not changing it specially in the return period for staples.

Could either or both of you please post a photo of the horizon test?

I've been waiting to repurchase, and it seems like a lot more people are getting solid screens these days, but some are still reporting separation. Since it's not uncommon for users to say that their displays are perfectly flush without checking thoroughly, I hope you'll understand my request.

To check if the left side of your screen is lifting, hold the device with the right side facing you. Look across the display and use the left bezel as a thin, silver horizon line. If the black display is higher at any point, you'll be able to see it interrupt that silver line.

Here is an example of a perfectly flush display, looking across the device from the right side.

Also, if anyone else with a flush C8 would be willing to do this, I would very much appreciate it.
I think this test is silly. On my first nexus the left screen was pretty separated, I didnt notice till I saw the the comments here about it, but if I pushed down on the left side it was squishy and made noise. The one I have now is great, except if I do this test it would fail, as it has a tiny bit of lift. The device is perfect thought, the lift affects nothing, and I would never have noticed it if I hadn't done this test.

There are legitimate cases of screen lift out there that warrant return. But if you need to do the test you described to see it, it's not really a problem in my opinion.

By the way, I had four nexus's in total due to exchanges, two of them were completely flush, to the point where they would pass this test, but they had other problems like screen bleed and screen flicker. If all your tablet has is a tiny bit of screen lift that you can't even FIND without looking for the silver line at eye level, even I (who exchanged my device three times) think you are overreacting.

Mine is about a mm lifted after only 10 days of actual light use. That test not only causes the bleed but squeaking as well. I'm definitely returning mine. I agree with you there though. If it wasn't as bad and made no noise then it may be alright. But I've only put maybe eight hours on it in two weeks. Only three charge cycles, so it's definitely going to get worse.

Thank you for checking, and for replying despite your concern that this result could be misinterpreted.

It's very possible that I am being overly cautious, but my thoughts will be proven or disproven by the screen cracking incidence rate over the course of the next year. Hopefully it will not affect a significant number of units, and I will be proven wrong in this speculation against my own interests.

You may disagree with my decision to either wait for a fix or hold out for something else, but the fact that you posted the result of this test despite your misgivings about its significance is a fine example of the sort of scientific detachment that makes xda a great place for device support.

My C7 from 2 weeks ago is still perfect. I was worried the lift would come but hasn't. I took 4 replacements but finally got good one. Sounds like even on C8s still have issues.

I don't blame you for returning it even for as minimal as it may sound. It seems like people are now having to deal with cracked screens because of the lift issue. IMO it wouldn't be worth waiting to see if it hurts you or even risk it to pay the asking price of 160 or so that they ask to replace the screen.

I would like to see a tear down of a C8 unit to see a change has actually been made. I honestly don't think they changed anything....

I cannot put into words how much this rages me to know that people are faced with this ultimatum.

  • User purchases Nexus 7 tablet.
  • User has Nexus 7 tablet for a matter of 1-2 weeks.
  • User's Nexus 7 screen cracks, in some cases from 1ft high drops, in other cases without even touching the screen itself
.
  • ASUS had a design flaw which resulted in ultra easy to crack screens.
  • ASUS refuses to acknowledge design flaw.
  • ASUS charges user 3/4 of original N7 price to fix cracked screen that resulted from ASUS's design flaw.
  • ASUS thinks they're doing a fair job.

No, ASUS. You need to own up to your design flaw. Period. Done. Over. End of story. You need to start righting some wrongs about this issue.

I just checked the tracking info. My N7 is in Texas already and will likely be at the ASUS RMA facility today. They better have good news for me.

Saying goodbye to my c70, on its way back to staples after I post this. Screen lift was actually getting worse after it was used all day by my girlfriend. Now it bleeds when pressed on the left side. I really liked this tablet too. They don't have any in stock so I'll have to wait to get a replacement.

Boy I'm going to miss this thing!

Mine is in Kentucky right now, will be here by end of day tomorrow. Looking forward to sharing what I find in the box haha. Hoping its a C80, considering my C60 was a piece of trash. Screen flicker, and bleed doesnt annoy me, >1mm screen lift does...

Thank you for that, everyone has the right to make their own decisions about their product, I'm sorry that I implied otherwise. For example, you'll see in another thread I posted a pic of one of my nexus's having light bleed, and was told by several people that it was common and their opinion was that I shouldn't exchange (I asked for their honest opinion by the way, and appreciated getting it).

In the end though, the light bleed issue along with the fact that the tablet was significantly brighter than all the others I'd seen (even on lowest setting, causing me trouble when using at night in the dark), made me end up exchanging it anyway. I'm happy I did. I have one with normal brightness, and no light bleed at all. The other one as flush, whereas this one has the tiny screen lift, but I did what was best for me and am much happier for it.

My only point I was trying to make, I suppose, is to be cautious with looking too hard for faults that wouldn't have bothered you otherwise, as for the time being there is a slight chance you will get a new tablet with worse problems than your previous one. But every person is different, and even every problem is different, not all screen lifts or light bleed issues, etc., are equally serious, so everyone make sure to make an informed decision and do what they feel will make them a happy consumer, regardless of what I or anyone says. And thank god for xda, I agree many of us would be lost without it :)

Huh, I hope I'm not screwed. Just picked up my N7 from Wal-Mart agree then being out of stock last two weeks and got home to realize it is a C60k .... How is it possible that a 60 is just making it to the stores? It is changing now, wondering if i should box it up now and return it.

Screen is flush, but if i push on it, there is minor creaking.

I'll wait & see for now.

If it's creaky, try removing the 3rd and 5th screw on the left side(right when on it's back) if you are not happy with your purchase, you can always RMA or get a full refund :)

I bought one at Walmart on the 15th. It too is a C60. Has a bit of screen lift, but no creaking.
