Question ASUS says bootloader can't be unlocked on Hong Kong version of ZenFone 8 (ZS590KS). Anything I can do?

According to ASUS support the bootloader of my Hong Kong version of ZenFone 8 (ZS590KS) cannot be unlocked. They do not support it.

Anything I can do?

I find it surprising because usually China/HK phones are actually easier to unlock than US ones.

Yes I see you can download the unlock APK from the HK site... very strange.

I'll try to get further information from them.

I see. Maybe something wrong with their servers or a change of policy. It did certainly work before.

Update: ASUS support was talking crap. The bootloader unlock app worked.

Still annoying that you need an internet connection to unlock your phone though; I won't buy another ASUS product again.

Yes, the one which is available on the ASUS site. It's the same app on the US and HK sites.

I did have to connect to a WiFi network for it to work; I guess the app sends your phone's info to ASUS so they can deny any warranty claims in the future or something equally as shady.

yes, the app calls asus services... but for me it's still not working, did you do something else via google account?

No, I didn't have any info on the phone at all. It was freshly restored. Just connected to WiFi and installed the APK via SD card.
