Ok one last question before I start this root thing.

I just finished getting everything setup exactly the way I want.

Doing the procedures to root, I'm going to have to do the setup all over again.

Since I can't yet put clockwork on the tablet, what else can I use to backup the tablet so I can do a restore to get back everything looking the same as I have it now.

Is it even possible?

If so, what should I use to do this backup with?

Thanks!

Rob

You don't need to restore the tablet to factory settings, you can just downgrade , root and update the firmware without losing anything at all. I didn't do a wipe (never done a wipe) and my tablet is running perfectly. But, just in case I would backup the apps with Asus Backup application, and transfer those files to your PC or a SD card just for safe keeping.

OPTIONAL:

If you really want to do a wipe before rooting and you are using stock launcher I don't think there is a way of backing up your home-screens, there are several launcher out there that can do that. The next best thing you can do is take screenshots of each screen so you can remember what goes where.

Oh, that sounds better, I didn't realize I don't have to do a wipe before doing the downgrade.

I was coming in this evening to ask a question about Asus's app backup program.

Does anyone know why it will only backup 600 MB? Did you notice that?

Also, I've been testing out Nova Launcher, and I did see the backup option. Thanks for the reminder.

Ok, this morning I woke up to find the TF300T wanting to upgrade itself.

Seems Asus is pushing out the latest upgrade. The article stated that the firmware has not yet made it to their download page.

I'm sure that will happen soon enough.

I was going to spend this afternoon 'rooting' my TF300T.

Now I need to know if I install the upgrade first, just so I can see what they did, can I still attempt the rooting process?

Or should I prevent the upgrade, perform the root process then allow the upgrade process to do its thing, with the machine freshly rooted?

I'm at the doctor's office right now, so I need to kill some time, this doctor runs real late.

Thanks

Ok, I'm getting a little confused when I go to follow the instructions for rooting that were provided.

I know once I do this once, I will slap my head and think what was wrong with me, but until I perform it that one time, I'm a little nervous.

Anyway, in step 1, which I have to do since I need to downgrade, it's telling me to get something called BLOB. But when I go to that link, the person that set this up, gave 3 options. I'm getting confused on which option to choose. I personally think it's option 3 but I'm not sure.

So one question for everyone, is there a video guide on youtube that might help guide me though this process?

I ended up doing the upgrade that Asus pushed out, it wasn't a major upgrade, from what I read.

Also, I'm getting confused on the differences between the two file source offerings by Asus download page.

One is Firmware and the other is Source Code.

What do I need for the rooting process, the firmware or source code?

Thanks! I"m such a nub! Sorry!

The blob you need is the US .17, should be the first one in the list (if we are talking about the same post). You don't need the source code, that is specially for devs, it will be very helpful once we get the bootloader unlocked. So, just focus on the Firmware files.

It is always good to ask questions first, that way you won't be sorry later.

This is where I'm at now.

I just downloaded the .17 and .26 files from xda...google docs?

US_epaduser9_4_3_17UpdateLauncher.zip
and
US_epaduser9_4_3_26UpdateLauncher.zip

and I'm about to do:

US only right now, unless I find the .17 files for WW/TW.
To downgrade from .26 to .17 use method 2 in the guide found here. Make sure to thank wolf849.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1622628

Instructions - Method 2 - UnRooted
1. Upload the BLOB file to internal storage of your tab. (mounted as /sdcard)
2. Connect tablet to the computer and start ADB shell session.
3. When you will be in adb shell execute following commands:

Should I do this now?

I downloaded the files, but where do I get this BLOB thing?

Thanks!

Inside the zip archive you downloaded you will find another zip, inside that one you will see a file called BLOB. Just extract that file and upload it to your internal sdcard. Then follow the instructions carefully, take your time reading them, no need to hurry.

Found it inside the .17 extract just as you stated. OK what's next so upload that file to the internal sd not my external card. I can do that without even hooking up the table to the usb port?

Let me read the next step in the option 2 box... right! LOL!

Thanks for sticking with me through this... it's really appreciated. I was going to put it off one more day, but now that you're working with me, I'm going to move forward... and learn it tonight and get it going tonight! <grin>

Whoops! Forgot that I needed the ADB stuff.

I just realized that the BLOB file is really too large to copy via wifi connection.

So I went to connect the computer to the tablet via USB and on this particular computer I never installed the PCSuite, which I guess gives me the ADB connection.

Good morning everyone!

Well after working most of the night with jgaf I learned a lot but we did not have success in getting my 300 rooted.

It appears that there might be several reasons and I wanted to ask here for options on what might have gone wrong.

It seems I'm having trouble getting adb access correctly.

I had originally installed the Asus PC Suite on my XP computer (which is what I am using for the process), that installs Asus's own usb driver.

jgaf said he just installed the Android sdk for that driver.

Also, I have been using this computer for my Samsung Galaxy S II stuff, so there is a usb driver for that as well.

There is a chance it could have worked as well and I just might not have been patient enough, which I'm going to test out again. During he viper process the first time around I got an adb access error. The second time after choosing option 1 for the download it got to a point where it said I had to wait 3-10 minutes. In that time the tablet reboot totally and was back, but then viper got stuck at a statement 'step 3' and just froze there.

It's jgaf idea that I just did not wait long enough for the process to finish.

Because after we gave up for the night, I had just happened to power down the 300 and then turn it back on, when I did turn it back on, it attempt to downgrade, I believe, but failed with a message saying blob was corrupted that crc failed. Some like that.

So this morning, I uninstalled all the drivers (hopefully they really got off) even my Samsung stuff.

I want to start clean and try it again.

So not to make this much longer and get everyone angry. I want to know if anyone had any step that I can take to make sure I do have the ADB access correctly, or what topic area I can ask to get help.

Thanks!

Rob

OK, I'm about to try this again and I cleaned up my computer so I'm only running the one step (ViperMOD Primer Tool v4.5) recommended by jgaf.

One fast question?

When I plug the USB cable into the PC, should the 300 be up and running or do I need to be in the developer download mode. Something like I have to do on my Samsung phone?

I copied the .17 blob file to the upper level of the /mnt/sdcard/blob

Thanks

Rob

What is the difference between unlocking the tf300 and rooting the tf300?

I know rooting is effectively making yourself the SU, but what is the difference wrt unlocking? Just being able to use it in a different region?

Make sure you did not accidentally 'disabled' the built-in email app .

It seem that you can disable the email program that Asus provided.

Its not the same as the Gmail app program.

I personally use Kaiten email app (basically the paid version of the free K-9 email app ), so I intentionally disabled the built-in email app.

OK, I enabled my email app just to check what you might check.

See if the frequency is not set to 'never' and there are a few other settings below that that you can double check.

Its a very simple email client with very limited features.

Do that a look at K-9 email client in the Play store.

Unlocking allows you to flash other ROMs onto your device (you no longer get ROM updates from ASUS). If you do not plan on flashing a new ROM then there is no reason to Unlock.

I want to publicly thank jgaf for spending his evening guiding me the downgrade process and then sticking with me through rooting and ultimately until I got my 300 back up to the latest version.

We used the Sparky method.

Have some issues with Titanium Backup, but that is for another day.

I'm off to make some donations.
