Recently received an Asus Zenfone 9 and the Asus Unlock App is returning "Failed to unlock your device, please try again later.[24802]" when attempting to unlock the bootloader. While running logcat I also see the following HTTP output:

I got the same error on my Zenfone9 (AI2202).
Is there something wrong with the asus server?

Hello I am Japanese.
I bought a device at a local electronics store today and was unable to unlock it, so I looked into it.

According to the official ASUS forum, it seems that the server used to unlock the device is under maintenance and cannot be used.
The maintenance period seems to be 3-7 days.

That's really it. Why hasn't it been restored yet?

I mean, if it's going to be this long, I'd like to see some kind of announcement.

Anyway, I'm using it normally without rooting.
I guess pixel is the easiest phone to tinker with....

5chで相談しようと思ったら規制が厳しくて書き込めませんでした(;´Д`)
凌ぎでPixel6aを購入しましたが、ブートローダーのアンロックやファームの書き込みなど、本当に簡単ですよね。

I tried to discuss this on 5ch.net, but I couldn't write because of strict restrictions. I bought a Pixel6a as a replacement until my zenfone9 can be rooted, but it's really easy to unlock the bootloader and write firmware.

Hi pompom252,

If google could make a model with jack output, smaller device, 6inch screen with a good flagship I would love to get one. But most people like and keep using >6.3 inch smartphone... And see what many companies doing right now. Selling large phones.... I wonder what size asus plan to make in their future zenfone?

もう5月終わるのにまだロック解除できなくて草。復旧する頃にはZenfone10発売されてそう。

It's the end of May and I still can't unlock the grass. By the time it's restored, Zenfone 10 will be on sale.

I have the global Rog Phone 7 ultimate from the first release date in europe, tried unlocking it after a few days and I cant do it with the official unlocking app. I get the same error as everyone else, currently it's impossible to unlock any asus phones in the official way with that app. I am tired of waiting, almost 2 months without any update from them. Is there a way to unlock my rog phone 7 ultimate bootloader and root it? It runs the WW stock rom from Asus

Unfortunately, I don't think so. I suspect the keys reside in Asus' servers, so unless we can find an exploit (and compromise the device's security), we have no choice but to wait and pressure them to fix their servers.

Hopefully they already have a fix ready to implement. Clearly we are waiting for the next maintenance window for that particular server, since the issue wasn't deemed urgent enough to justify a change ticket outside of regular maintenance. This sadly delays fixing it until that window.

I asked Asus support when it would be possible to unlock boot again on Zenfone 9 and Zenfone 10 and the answer was no. Could not re-unlock the BOOT on these phones

This is unbelievable and unacceptable. We need to make some noise and get this reverted asap. I tweeted gamers nexus and will make some posts on reddit.

It seems not good for Zenfone 9 & 10 users. We need to put pressure on Asus. They can't just remove this possibility. I will definitely return my Zenfone 10 if it is true.

Asus keeps us in dark and they haven't sent any official information about this. I suggest everyone with Zenfone 9 & 10 to write and ask Asus support team about unlock bootloader possibility.

This is really odd behavior. Having worked in software for 13 years, you always keep the current working server up for as long as possible. At most the downtime is 48 hours, but it’s usually a couple hours if not minutes—not months. The PR dept.’s renege might be a sign of damage control after enough folks caught wind. I’ll believe their walk-back when I see it, but I’m happy I too caught this thread before making a purchase.

It’s times like this you wish the kernel & OS were GPL 3 vs. GPL 2 + Apache 2. They release the kernel code for user to look at, but without a requirement to allow flashing modifications, Asus isn’t obligated to release this tool to allow users to do anything with that code—even if that leads to ill will (but that’s capitalism for you). They’ll likely argue its about keeping warranty (despite the stingy 2-year updates) or some attestation requirement, but purchasing a several-hundred-dollar device should imply ownership & the freedom to do what you want with said device, not renting from a corporation & only approved uses.
