Ordered! thanks! I'll follow up with a read-benchmark of my own.

Sandisk ultra microSDXC UHS-I 64GB Card arrived, looks *exactly* like yours, and I get 3.73MB/s read rate on my Z500M.

Any other ideas on the possible difference? Last firmware update? Special partition format? encryption?

software version ww_13.0610.1612.22_20170214 (february update)
android security patch level dec 1, 2016
model P027
internal memory encrypted (not sd card)
serial number ends in PT3

This is the third sdxc card i've tried which is generally useless in the Zenpad 3S 10.

Following up, it appears that a "cold start" with the SDXC inserted fixes the problem. I was getting 20MB/s from asus to pc (using usb), and movies start within a second, with no buffering. I can flip through photos as fast as my thumbs allow. The "A1 SD Bench" tool still shows miserable performance (<4MB/s), which can't be right, based on other read-tests showing a solid 20MB/s. I did a few reboots and transferred six gigs or so to make sure it wasn't buffer cache.

All fixed imho, thanks for the additional testing and insights. Just remember to not power up with an sdhc card, then insert an sdxc card later without a cold boot.

After the latest update, my ZenPad 8.0 is buttery smooth. Really enjoying how far it has come and erases my need for another tablet for the foreseeable future.

I just bought an Asus ZenPad 3S 10 off of Newegg and it will be delivered today. I have a couple of questions:

1. Has anyone, anyone at all, been able to root this device or is it just a myth that it can be done?

2. Is the latest Marshmallow update at least 6.0.1 rather than just 6.0.0?

3. How do I back up my Asus ZenPad 3S 10 system and all my important data? Obviously, if there's no root TWRP can't be used, so what happens if your MM installation gets hopelessly corrupted or infected with viruses and you need to restore?

Thanks for any replies.

I just got a reply from Asus support saying that Nougat is planned for Z500KL (LTE model) and will propably arrive in the second quarter of 2017. Maybe Custom Firmware and root is possible after all at least for that model?

Not sure about the non-LTE model though, I've read that the gpu ore something isn't even compatible with Nougat, but I'm not an expert on that topic, might message Asus again about that.

Just got my ASUS ZenPad 3S tablet 3 days ago and I do not regret my purchase at all (unlike, say, my Nvidia Shield K1 tablet which I had to RMA literally the day after I received it) but I'm disappointed by what few resources we have online for it. I would love to know, for example, how can we make a custom recovery using something like TWRP. But since there's virtually no reliable information anywhere that the device can even be rooted, it looks like that's not an option. Otherwise I really like this tablet. Just wish there was a bigger, more active online community for it. I feel like I'm on my own if I need any help.

Exactly the reason why I'm torn between this and the S2. Hardware-wise the ZenPad is exactly what I want, but I don't want to spend money on a device on which the software is already outdated and can never be updated, so I'm still waiting to see if official updates or CFWs are comming.

Yeah, I miss that ability to experiment. On my Nexus 7 2013, I must have tried 5 different builds and custom roms of Android and countless re-installs of MM. But if you bought the ZenPad 3S 10, you're stuck with a single build (MM 6.0) and it's not even the latest revision of MarshMallow (6.0.1). Otherwise it's a pretty decent tablet, which I like to use for gaming as an alternative to the Nvidia Shield. I am disappointed by its gaming performance on certain AAA titles, however, like the last two Asphalt titles using non-PowerVR versions which for some reason run so choppy on this device that they're pretty much unplayable, and older titles like The Cave (playable but stutters very noticeably during cache loads). All other games I've tried, including most racing ones, play fine. I'd love to play around a bit and see if it's the MarshMallow 6.0 build and test how they play under KitKat 4.4.4 but., alas, impossible without any ability to flash older versions of android.

You might want to start a new thread for the ZenPad 3S and see if it can gain some traction. Up until you mentioned your model, I had no idea that Asus had come out with a tablet in late 2016. Given the reviews that I have just looked at, it looks like quite the tablet, and there is only one model available which might stop the fragmentation that occurred with the models that this thread was initially created for.

I guess it's worth a try. This is a nice, underrated tablet that perhaps should be getting more attention. I'm discovering two things that are very disappointing about it however - 1. large amount of non-removable Asus bloatware (hopefully this device gets a working rooting solution soon which should help in removing all this crapware). 2. Gaming performance doesn't seem much better than my old Nexus 7 2013 with the Adreno GPU. But everything else really clicks for me.

One of my tablets is the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M)
Great tablet and although it isn't rooted, I go to /settings/app/ and disable the bloatware.
As far as gaming performance goes I don't believe it's the tablets fault. I think that the OS ie: kernel needs tweaking and updating for this chipset. I not a fan of Android 6.0 on any device I have and upgrade to Android 7 whenever possible.

FYI, I started a new topic specifically for the ASUS ZenPad 3S 10 (Z500M) here if anyone's interested. All are welcome to bring some traffic to the thread. As has been mentioned most in this topic, we all want to see it rooted so it can start doing some really interesting things. I'm curious, for example, about a mod I heard about for unrooted tablets where you can set your device to stop charging when it reaches a certain pre-configured range, like 20% for low battery level alarms, and 80% for the maximum battery level charge. Of course you can download apps that will set off an alarm when battery levels are too low or too high (can anyone recommend a good app for this, btw?) but it would be fantastic to see an actual automatic shut-off for when you're unable to attend to your device. I hope my new topic attracts other interesting concepts like this.

Anyone has issues with GPS? After the latest update of stock MM ROM, Google Maps losts signal every 30 seconds. It can't be usable.

Z300C not staying connected to wifi

When I returned from a 2-week holiday last week I found that my Zenpad 10 Z300C had completely powered itself down, and required several attempts to hard reset it. It eventually started up, and went through a lengthy "optimising apps" stage, as if there had been a software update (but there were no other signs that there had been an update). My build number is LRX22G.WW_P023-V4.7.5-20160419044030548_201506300108.

Now it frequently disconnects from my wifi router - it won't stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time. The wifi icon in the notification bar changes to what looks like a small circular arrow (not dissimilar to a recycling icon). If I turn wifi on/off I see an "authentication problem" message next to the router's SSID in wifi settings. The only way I can restore the wifi connection is to turn airplane mode off/on.
Any idea how I might fix this??

Try going into developer options and turn on "Use legacy DHCP client"

Hello. I have a zenpad 8 z380knl. It seems that Asus support (software update) is ended. I want to try something new, but there is none. I only found lineage 14.1 for z380kl. I've heard that it's almost completely similar to my tablet, except the fact that my tablet is 4G. Plus, it seems that both tablets' nickname is P024 which is mentioned in the zip file name! So I'm confused! Can I try it or not? Is there any other custom rom for my tablet? Thanks in advance for your answers.
