I just got off a chat where the rep denied that he had ever seen this bulletin, but after checking my IMEI said my phone was defective and needed to be replaced. He did ask about the color and shape of a sticker in the battery compartment, and said that square white sticker in my phone is what he was looking for.
That's the water damage indicator.
If it was missing or discolored, you could not get an exchange.

Yuck.. I keep putting it off but I will need to go to the AT&T warranty center and ask for a replacement.

Received mine back in Sept - IMEI # starts with 351
Build 1008 rev 0.06

But maybe the shutdown issue will go away....? Just haven't had much confidence is all.

Did you talk to AT&T rep or Samsung rep? I just talked to a Samsung rep and he claims that no such press release exists...

Also, did he mention anything about whether you would get a new or refurbished phone? and how long the process would take?

AT&T, and they are handling it as a regular warranty replacement. This means the phone will be "like new", or either new or refurb depending on what they have in stock at the time.

Also, if that bulletin is legit it is an internal product bulletin not a press release and they would probably not confirm it as it would leave Samsung with a large and costly field recall. They did no troubleshooting, and just agreed to replace the phone.

So can anyone clarify what exactly I should be doing based on the release? Should I be contacting AT&T for a replacement, or Samsung? I'm outside the 30 days by a wide margin, but I kinda gathered from the release that AT&T should be able to assist me. Is that accurate?

It would seem they missed a batch. Mine ended in 7813 and just returned for the same problem. More to come from them i am sure when more do this.
But what were your first 3 digits? The OP is misleading at first glance...

352xxxxxxxx5394 or lower

so if yours was 351xxxxxxxx7813, it would fall into that range, as I read it.

My last four is 1524 and have only had a couple random reboots when using an i9000 rom..

Not sure I would want to flash to stock and get another new refurb with a later build date risking not having the 3 button recovery...

I've heard the newer builds have better gps from stock, but this isnt 100% gauranteed.

Has anybody got to exchange their device in store? I am afraid to walk into the store without credible proof of this press release.

My IMEI: 3518xxxxxxx7834.
The stores will not normally exchange a phone after 30 days, and refer you to the 800 number for a replacement. They can make exceptions but those tend to be rare.

My phone was in the 351 range and experienced random shutdowns when the battery was below 70% charged.

I got my phone through Amazon Wireless. Called them, they knew about the issue right away, but couldn't replace my phone. They recommended calling Samsung. The call to Samsung was a poor experience. Level 1 tech wanted me to do a bunch of the basic troubleshooting, so I skipped to level 3. That guy told me he could arrange a repair...7-10 days without the phone. I went to the AT&T corporate store. They sent me to another service location a mile away. The service tech found the release and immediately replaced my phone. Unfortunately, the new refurb also falls in the bad range.

I'm going to stick with this one until it exhibits the issue.

I got my phone in sept. I called att 10 days ago (well after the 30 days) and went through their troubleshooting. This included a master reset where i would do it and they would call back in 2 days to see if it had shutdown. It did shutdown and mailed a replacement to me and sent the other one back in the mail yesterday.

It was a very smooth process. They say the customer service isn't good, but they were good, prompt, and even called when they said they would to see if the master reset worked.

This may be a dumb question, but...have you had the problem?

Credibility of this memo shouldn't be an issue, unless you're wanting to premptively replace it.

If the phone is bad and you're under warranty, then...

I replaced my original phone in-store, within my 30 days, about a week and a half ago, well before this memo came to light.

I told them it was starting the shutdown issue, of which they claimed no knowlege, of course, but they did indeed replace my phone.

My replacement phone is a 351xxxxxxx7623, hasn't had problems yet.

From what I understand of the memo in the OP, it's not necessarily going to happen with EVERY phone in the range, and this is evidenced by some posters earlier in the thread who have numbers in the range, but haven't had a single problem.

I never had any problem until a week ago and I had the phone since September. I think if it were me, I'd be looking for a pre-emptive replacement.
