Noticed over the last few weeks some MMS issue's with my phone and many others in my area; e.g. sending/receiving, etc. A phone reset or quick airplane mode would fix for a few days then suddenly startup again after a few days.

Problem occurred again today and while I was trying to determine what the problem was noticed my APN was now "phone" versus the previously default "pta". Checked with the wife and a few friends and all were changed.... funny thing is, only Samsung phones are seeing the change as far as I can tell. HTC, etc are still using "pta"... possibly related to the JB update?

Called AT&T and after a very long discussion and escalation, it appears they are in the process of a natation wide migration from "pta" to "phone".

On a side note, manually creating a new "pta" APN still works and I don't see any speed, signal difference between the two, but according to AT&T this APN will slowly going away.

Would be interesting to hear from others what your APN is set to and whether you're on JB or ICS.

I can confirm on ICS it was the pta APN, but when I updated to jelly bean it switched to phone. I believe the settings are the same for both though.

Can you post the APN settings? My phone is still defaulting to WAP.Cingular until I create a pta APN. I'd like to try the phone APN.

You should be able to restore defaults and force it to pull in the default APN its picking up, if you're not getting the proper APN I would check your account to confirm its been properly provisioned for LTE.

It's literally just "phone"... similar to before the pta APN was created, but with a few changes.

Name: ATT PHONE
APN: phone

Interesting. It was always assumed that switching from pta to phone turned off LTE. I suppose that isn't the case anymore. I think it's great news considering we don't need 4-5 APN's on one carrier. It gets a little ridiculous.

No, I don't think "phone" APN means no LTE. I looked at an AT&T store at the HTC One X and it had the APN sent to "pta", while the newer HTC One X+ had it set to "phone". Both showed a 4G LTE connection and gave about the same speedtest results. Also, from talking to AT&T tech support I was told "pta" was old, the new devices come configured with "phone" as the APN and that's what I want. I'd otherwise take the info from AT&T tech support with a big grain of salt given that many of their people say funny things most of the time, but after seeing the default settings on the HOX+ this fellow may have been correct.

I'd still love to know what the differences between pta and phone APNs are, if any.

I dont know about everyone but in Los Angeles I'm lucky if I can get 5mpbs at LTE.

I read in the forum about how other people's lte speed is around 15-20mpbs.

I dont know if they only giving me that speed cause I still have unlimited data plan or if Los Angeles speed sucks in general

I have the unlimited plan also, im in south Florida and mostly i get around 30down 20up. My apn also defaulted to phone, but for some reason I do get slightly better speeds on the pta apn.
