Step 6c asks to back up to external SD card. This phone I have does not use an external SD card. Tried internal storage but get error Failed to mount data invalid Argument. any Ideas?

Buy an external SD card, otherwise you can't make backups :) .
Purchased a external SD card. Phone does not see it. I've tried it on 3 other phones with no problems. Have looked all over in settings for possibly something that needs turned on but no luck. Suggestions? external drive is 32gb. is this to big?

32GB is not too big, I use 128GB ;) ..

Check Settings - Advanced - Memory and storage. If it's there, format it in the phone. Normally you just put it in and it gets detected. Maybe try formatting it in the other phone first.

What storage exactly did you buy?

I did format it in a different phone with no problem. in settings storage it is not there.
i purchased a Sandisk Ultra Duel USB Drive 3.0 32gb
I was able to unlock bootloader and put TWRP in the phone so I would think the USB port on the phone is ok. Even through TWRP I can not see the drive to do the backup.

Might be worth swapping out the drive for a new one.

You were supposed to buy a microSD card which goes into the tray which the nano SIM is in. Are we on the same page here?

Oh I'm sorry. The rep at AT&T told me this phone did not have an option for an external SD card. I have never looked in the tray trusting he knew what he was talking about. Wow why is it the simplest things make one feel so..... I will do this in the morning. Thank you for being so patient with me. You are a blessing.

When going to backup files from with TWRP there are only 3 files selected. system, data and boot. do I need any of the other files? catch, recovery, EFS, tz_image, modem image, cust_image and system image? Thanks

This really should be a sticky. Finding this info took a fair bit of effort. I only found it because I found someone else's thread that was complaining about the fact the the original root thread's links were dead, and someone else pointed that person here. This is the only thread with useful instructions and functioning links at this point. Thank you for making this!
