Actually, I am rooted. I can't imagine owning a non-rooted phone.
What I'm asking is is there a fix that requires being rooted?

Coming from where the wind begins.....
I'm not sure if it is, but I believe I read somewhere that root needs to be done in order to get it to work.

You can just root, install safe strap, and flash the fix. That's what I did and everything is working great here.

If you want to void your warranty you can do that....

What aobut the people who bought this phone legitimately and want it to work properly? For those people, please file a complaint with FCC, sign the petition, and make your voice heard on the customer forums.

I agree it should work properly, but I need my phone to work and won't wait on AT&T. We've got great developers here who've fixed the issue and made it super easy to do!

If you're worried about the warranty, you can always use the method below this thread to return to stock, unrooted, warranty intact.

A quote from a chat with AT&T about the issue

Zain Beckstead: It looks like AT&T is actually very aware of this issue, and is currently working with Samsung to analyze the situation and identify the solution. As soon as the software update is available it will be pushed to you. The reason the Kitkat update is taking so long, is so we can provide a fix for the GPS situation

Something interesting happened today. My gps usually loses signal at a certain place on my commute. I use Tasker to auto turn off my wi-fi. Today I decided to keep wifi on and I didn't lose my gps signal at the usual spot in my commute. In fact I didn't lose my signal at all. Will find out in the next week if this is merely coincidence.

[Edit] It was coincidence -- lost my signal on day 2.

GPS Made Me Jump Ship!!

GM,

I purchased my GN3 last month without the knowledge of the GPS issue. Earlier this week I had to take a 1 1/2 hour trip when I noticed what everyone in this thread have already iterated. That's when I decided to do some research and found this thread along with the AT&T Android Development thread. I immediately called my AT&T corporate store to see if I could exercise a return, although I was well outside of my 14 day return window by 10 days. After explaining to the rep about the GPS issue, which he had never heard of, he stood his ground and said that if I was outside of my return period I was out of luck. He immediately referred me to Warranty Replacement.

Ended up calling them and the tech was well aware of the GPS issue, and after going through there 1 2 3 steps she began processing me a warranty replacement for another phone, NOT the GN3!! Being that I rely on my GPS to get me around for my job I asked if they could overnight it to me,in which she say they only offered 2 day business shipping and I had to pay for it. I agreed and hung up. Fast forward 8 hours later and I noticed I didn't receive a tracking number, called back and rep said sorry your order won't ship out until tomorrow morning even though the order was placed in the AM. Somehow they screwed my order up and it got pushed back. I explained to the rep how I need my phone as part of my employment and that this was unacceptable. She said since I was only 10 days outside of my warranty she was surprised that my corporate store didn't accept my return. She was unprofessional telling me how Online and Corporate stores don't see eye to eye and how their processes don't always serve the customer's immediate needs. Now I say unprofessional only because from a person who is a Manager and if I heard her talking in this manner to a customer she would be written up. From a customer's view she was definitely speaking the truth. It feels like a war in going on behind the scenes with Online vs Corporate processes. Nonetheless, it ended up that all she could do was have a person call me at lunch the next day to follow up with me about my order:confused:

Fast forward 30 minutes after the call, I said what the heck...I'm going to the corporate store and request to talk to the manager. Ended up talking to the manager and referred her to XDA and AT&T websites to back up my claim of GPS issues and she was utterly shocked and never heard of such an issue. I mean 4 or 5 reps pretty much abandoned there customers after the Manager asked them if they ever heard of the GPS issues and me pointing them to this thread and their OWN AT&T thread.

That sealed the deal and I was automatically offered a exchange of my choice, in which I ended up receiving a refund for the difference and a new 14 day return window for the new phone. Odd thing is that my online warranty replacement was immediately cancelled, because I received a email about 3 hours after I left the store with my new phone notifying me that it was cancelled.

Just putting this out there for those who are thinking about changing up on the sole fact of the GPS issue.

Thanks

Throw me on that list of gps not working. It was fine one day. Then I'm not catching any satellites the next day. Flashed multiple roms. Restored mj5. Did the one clicked Kitkat leak. Full Wipes. Tried drakes gps fix. And got nada. Only way maps finds my location is thru Wifi and data. One thing I haven't tried yet is flashing m19 firmware then restoring mj5.

the major GPS issue on stock roms is not that no satellites are being seen. It is that the GPS signal is lost in the middle of navigating for apparently no reason at all. The cause is LTE changing to 4G, or your charger being plugged in/out. THAT is what everybody is complaining about.

This may be a little off topic. But if anyone here owned the original sgs(captivate). Remember that things gps. From rooting to swapping internal files.. to prying the antenna up and polishing the back cover... After all it ended up being a hardware issue with the phone basically all phones.
But since then ive owned the sgs2, note1,(all great gps) and currently the note 3. (with this gps issue :silly:)
