Note that if you're already on stock, method 2 won't touch your data partition (settings, apps, etc.). So if you're using it to root from stock, you will keep your settings and such.

If you are using it to recover a hosed-up phone due to flashing the wrong thing or mangling your system partition, you may need to wipe data/factory reset in recovery depending on what you were running before.
This method doesn't install cwm though right? It was on there until I used this method to remove the ! Gt-i9100 from the boot screen. Its now gone. Sorry, in advanced I'm new to the Droid community coming from iPhone 4 jb this is all new stuff

Sweet, doing now.
EDIT: Done and rooted, super user on there loading back app saves although WiFi tethering still does not work. Also, could this have made my phone slower at all?
Rooting alone does not fix WiFi tethering. You need to use Titanium Backup to freeze TetheringManager2.apk or outright remove it in Root Explorer or an ADB shell.

Correct. To get CWM without the ! screen, you need to do it in a somewhat convoluted fashion:

Hi,

I rooted my device using Super One Click, I now want to try Cognition X2 but before that I m unable to take the Nandroid backup using the below instructions

How to I get into CWM?
Pull the battery out of your phone to ensure it is completely off. Now hold down the Volume Up and Down buttons then hit the Power Button. Once you see the Galaxy S2 screen release the power button and Volume buttons.

Nothing comes up once I hold volume up + down n then power.
Pls help, thanks

hold down the power button for a second and set it to silent mode. you just have to make sure you set all your notifications to vibrate

Thank you so much! It worked
I know this might sound stupid- I have the zip files on my PC for Cognition X2 and CyanogenMod 7. How do I install them on my phone. Do I need an external SD card?

Also for CyanogenMod 7, it says I should "WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)" Doing so- will it erase all my apps, contacts etc? If yes, how would I get them back.
Sorry..I am naive in android :) ..this is my first smart phone
Thanks for all you help!!

Don't flash both just flash one. Put ROMS on root of sdcard then just access in cwm.

and then what option should I choose from CMW recovery mode..do I need to mount anything?
sorry again for the dumb questions. And post installation, how do I confirm the ROM is installed? Will I see any icon on Applications?

You...went to Cognition, then erased everything, and then went to CM7?

Uhm, go install Titanium Backup, and instead of hitting backup, in the batch menu hit restore apps. (DON'T hit restore all, that will mess up your ROM since you're on a different ROM than you backed up on...assuming you backed up using Cognition)

Thanks..I did that and have everything in place now..wanted to check what themes (HDPI vs. MDPI vs. LDPI) for CM7 will be suitable on my device..any idea?

Okay, I am very green to this, with this being my first Android phone, so I have a couple of dumb questions...

First, some background. I'm rooted using method 2 (stock ROM + root). Everything is working grand.

-Do I have CWM? If not, what do I do to get it?
-Also, would the only reason I'd need/want CWM is for custom ROMS?

No you don't have CWM you would need to flash using Codeworkx kernel. Go back to the first page of this thread and read the first post it will answer any questions you have.
