Is there a way to keep listening to the radio while in Car Play? I use the Car Link app to connect wirelessly to Car Play. Works great, except that I lose the audio from the radio as soon as I go into Car Play.

I thought I was onto something good with the s8, but not so much anymore. It is a good HU, sounds great and has some nice features. BUT, after finding out they have known about issues for over a year, and have not updated the unit to fix the problems it seems they are trying to pacify by bandaid instead of investing in programmers. these units haven't been updated since release. I have the issue where backup camera doesn't work, but the reverse camera works, and their response to me was that it was wired incorrectly. I didn't try to switch the rca jacks for rcin and vin yet, but will be even more discouraged it that is the fix. I may just send this unit and the darn camera, that I bought because i assumed my working camera was incompatible, back to amazon. Unfortunate that when we deal with chinese products we have no recourse as far as holding them accountable except to return their junk to their stateside warehouse so that amazon can send it out to another customer.
Now can I get some cheese to go with my whine?

The QA is bad. The software does have bugs. I can't help since I don't have the same issue though. :/

Help with verification on this. Tap the user & accounts icon in the settings menu and see if it activates the developer option in the system section.
EDIT: Never mind but it does work for both turning on and turning off the developer option.

It really is a shame because I had a great customer service experience when I purchased the A6 and needed to resolve a couple of issues. Unfortunately customer service for the S8 has been truly awful. I even mentioned the lack of updates in my communication with them and their response was basically, "we're unaware of any reason to develop and firmware update." I can't think of a more "head in the sand" response than this. I've come to be content with the limitations of the S8 because what does work works well for me, but I doubt that I will be purchasing another product from ATOTO in the future.

This is my exact mindset. I worked around the limitations of the firmware and I am now satisfied with my workarounds. But the firmware is quite limited in scope and offer little flexibility for different use cases.
By the way, does anyone know of a FM radio app compatible with the S8 besides the pre-installed one? Not internet radio or DAB. FM specifically (my country does not have a DAB system). I will test this one.

Edit: the Navradio Basic radio app does not work, but the dev is hard at work porting it to head units like the Atoto S8 (it depends on the MCU).

The radio app is rubbish isnt it? mine keeps untuning itself when driving.
I have a perfect signal then boom it tunes to static. I skip back
to the preset and its perfect again!
Has anyone had any luck with using the DAB dongle with it?

My issue with is that AF does not work well. Instead of locking into the station, it locks into the frequency.
Then I travel 300km to my home town and instead of going directly to the station I have memorized (like the original radio of my car), it goes to the empty frequency and does not look for the station I memorized in the first place.

Besides this, I have a specific radio station that cuts-off very frequently even with perfect signal - and it's precisely my favourite station! I called my radio installer and he told that may be caused by the hardware characteristics of the head unit leading to poorer reception and not because of the software. But I want to test this by using a different FM Radio app.
I don't have DAB in my country, so I make do with radio over the internet and it works quite nicely. But again, it is a workaround for a limitation of the firmware.

I'm satisfied with the head unit though. I was expecting even worse from chinese firmware. The chinese Android TV boxes are horrendous and this is a great experience compared to those. :ROFLMAO:

What country are you in? I don't think I saw you mention this.

I'm not familiar with the Atoto S8. What kind of CPU does it have? Just trying to figure out the comparable units from other manufacturers. That may determine other radio apps to try.

For the radio issues, has this just started or has it always been like this? What kind of car is it installed in? Are there any requirements for power to the antenna, as sometimes that is an issue.

I think the AF feature you're talking about is where a station is available in different areas at different frequencies and so when you have it on station A in one area, it's at say frequency X and then you travel to another area and the same station A is transmitting on frequency Y. The AF feature is supposed to automatically switch to the appropriate frequency. Is that how it's supposed to work? I don't believe that feature is available in North America.

Im having the same problem that the radio untunes itself from a otherwise perfect signal. I know this as if I press the preset station button its perfect still.
Ive tried all the settings in the app (RDS LOC AF etc) I cant find a way to stop it happening.

SoC Chip: Intel Airmont X86 Spreadtrum SC9853i Octa-Core (up to 1.872GHz) CPU with ARM Mali-T820 MP2 GPU. System Version: ATOTO AICE UI 10.0, developed & customized based on Android 8.1 Oreo;

It would be interesting to see if another fm app would fix it

I am in Portugal.
It's always been like this since I had the head unit installed so it might've been an issue with the installation.
And yes, that's how AF is supposed to work.

The Atoto is a FYT based head unit, with a UIS7862 SoC. The MCU is similar to equivalent Joyring head units.

That's what I wanted to try, but I might take my car to a different installer to check if the wiring is properly done.

I spent a long time today downloading the joying radio app from "joying mod without root thread" and extracting it, changing to the right name to match my app and went to flash... Then I read somewhere the radio.apk app is just the GUI and the carradio.apk was the one that did all the work.
I've given up and just brought a dab dongle. I would have liked to get it working but for £30 its not worth the hassle .
Atoto support weren't helpful at all just suggesting toggling the AF that I've tried already
Good luck though I hope.you find a solution that works

So there's a radio GUI app and an app that does all the work?
I wonder if any external app will also just be a GUI app?

Don't think so. I use the TuneIn app that works in CarPlay. It will auto detect your location and load all your local stations for streaming. With the free version you have to listen to a 30 sec add every time you change stations, but that get removed when you buy the $10 pro version.

Got a response from an Atoto costumer rep to my gripes. Here are the replies:

Q: The FM radio app does not memorize radio stations but frequencies. In my country if I move from one city to another 300km away, radio stations will be in completely different frequencies. The Radio app does not look for the same station in the frequency of the city I am in. It maintains the old frequency even when it is solely static. AF should fix this but it does not. It also does not change quickly enough for alternative frequencies that are stronger.

A: 1. In general, you can save your favorite radio stations and rename them on the S8 Standard model [Gen-2],
I enclosed a video showing how to do that with this message for your reference.

2. In practice, the "AF" feature integrated into our S8 model is a little bit different from the one in the conventional sense owing to the technology limitations as well as testing environment. Our engineers are making constant efforts to improve the performance of our existing products in addition to researching new products. I can inform you via email as soon as our engineers make any progress.

Q: Bluetooth 2 does not maintain connection neither with my smartphone to obtain internet via Bluetooth nor with the ATOTO AC-4450 OBD2 interface that I also bought.

3. In order to save your mobile data, "Bluetooth 2" of the car radio does not support automatic connection.
Hope for your kind understanding.

Supposing you do not mind that, in my view, perhaps you can try to connect the car radio to the hotspot of your cell phone,
as it supports automatic connection.

I have just attempted to help you search for the corresponding information about "Bluetooth tethering" online and found out
part of customers whose cell phones are based on Android achieved automatic connection of Bluetooth tethering
by installing a third-party application named "Bluetooth tethering manager" to both their cell phones and car radios.

Here is the link to download the APK file for "Bluetooth tethering manager" app:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/frxf6qdqh...ps.bluetoothtetheringmanager_2.0.7.1.apk?dl=0
Hope the information aforementioned is helpful for you.

Tips:
"Bluetooth tethering manager" app is developed by a third-party company,
therefore, I am not sure if there are any bugs of that app.

My opinion after these answers:
My issues with OBD2 were solved, because I didn't understand that I had to connect from the Torque app, I thought it should stay connected by default to Bluetooth 2, when that's not the case.
Having to resort to a third party app to get my smartphone to pair with Bluetooth 2 to share data is ridiculous. It defeats its purpose, and since I have a Tasker routine to enable the mobile hotspot of my smartphone when it connects to Bluetooth one, the solution proposed with another thrid party app does not interest me anyway.
The answer about the Radio app is a non-answer, and I don't expect to see a change coming any time soon so I will have to keep using internet radio apps.

I was provided with a .zip of the most recent firmware if anyone wants to tinker with it or compare itwith other FYT head unit firmwares.

No wanting to offend or anything, but why would is watching videos on a head unit is important to you? That's dangerous when driving...
Either way, if that was important you should've checked that before buying. It's also an issue on Android TV boxes where only ones with Amlogic SoCs support the DRM to run Netflix.
The reason is the same as above, I have a kid that travels with me and I'd like to connect the head unit for him to watch cartoons on long drives. I only use Carplay + Spotify

Guys, there's a new radio app available for the Atoto S8!!! I already tested this and it actually works!
It's the only radio app besides the native one (well and any from other FYT head units) that actually works with our head unit. :D

Hello. I recently had an ATOTO S8 Ultra installed in my 2010 Mazda 5, and everything is working nicely

    except for one small issue:

    Everything is perfect! But.

Anyone, that thinks they have Android Auto on these Chinese origin head units has a misunderstanding, been fooled or naive.

Poster, if Android Auto is want you really want, select a unit from here https://www.android.com/auto/compatibility/#compatibility-stereos

If you don't see your car or headunit listed here, or actually understood that unit brought from china, isn't AA but somehow think Zlink will do AA or something like AA, you have been fully duped.

Don't ask for support for this rubbish, You got what you paid for and the reseller is the first point of contact.

    Senior members should know better

Had a bit of a skim through this thread as I've been heavily considering an S8 premium 7" or a Joying 7"

Very mixed bag reviews going on in here but it also seems like a lot of people are possibly just asking too much of this unit?

As someone who is only going to use this for Radio/Spotify/Maps/Reverse Cam how trouble free of a unit will this be? Any opinions?
S8 Premium is enough for Radio/Spotify/Maps/Reverse Cam, most android headunit will support those, you can compare more like warranty and price then get the most suitable one.

Welcome! Please feel free to ask for help or share your experience with the Atoto S8 line of head units.

    Current lineup:

    S8 Standard S8G2A71S(2GB/16GB)
    S8 Pro Version S8G2A75P(4GB/32GB)
    S8 Ultra

    Tips/Notes
    • Ensure your Google contacts are backed up if you allow the HU to access them. It has been known to delete them. You can disable Contact Sync from the Accounts section in Settings.
    • Developer Options can be enabled via the repeated clicking under 'About', but to access the menu, you need a play store program that will take you directly to it. A lot of alternative launchers provide a way to access them.
    • The ONLY USB connection that USB debugging works on is USB1 --> Phone Link. For it to work, you need to change the "computer connection" to whatever the SECOND option is [untranslated]. This can be selected from the top right menu in Developer Options
    • File down the very end, outer part of the wire harness clip, and it will go in all the way and latch like it's supposed it. Just needs to clear the casing by 1/16" or less.
    • On at least the first batch of S8's there is a chance the RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect and need swapped. The labels are incorrect.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got mine in this afternoon and installed it in my 86 Ford truck this evening. Prior to that I set it up via the AC adapter (sold separately).
I know there are a lot more fleshed out reviews out there but here's my take on it.
I really liked the A6Y Pro. It started out really strong and for 95% of the time it did what was needed. When you consider it's a head unit so it encompasses a lot more than just an Android tablet, it really is impressive. Everything it did, it did well - it just did it kind of slowly. It got pretty sluggish at times when trying to switch between a lot of apps and installing apps from the app store was painfully slow. It should be noted that in just the normal run of the mill drive when you are listening to a single music/radio app or navigation it did great. It was really just when I was sitting in my truck messing with it that one noticed these things. So take those complaints as being a tad bit critical.
In comes the S8. I didn't have any plans of getting the S8 initially but since I am still working on the interior of the truck I am restoring I felt like it made sense to get the latest version before finalizing the wiring and dash.
Right off the bat, it's noticeably faster and more responsive. I could install my apps from the app store about as fast as I could click them. Even the cold boot wasn't much slower than my phone (A6Y Pro would go through the 'Optimizing app' process every time and that took awhile). The status bar has changed quite a bit in that the navigation is at the top left vs the bottom. The three primary buttons work really well there and the split screen feature works slick.
This is a personal preference but while I like the new status bar approach, I wouldn't mind seeing a way to style it differently. I am not a huge fan of colors up there like is seen when a phone is connected.

As I said, there are better video reviews out there but let me just say that if you have the A6Y and feel like you are pushing it, the S8 is the answer for you.
Additionally the Atoto support team is very quick to respond (realize that hours may differ from where you are) and is extremely helpful. That's a huge plus especially with the S8 being fairly new to market.

Items of note that I have found:
    1. LastPass and FCC Launcher.
Both need Accessibility Services but when trying to grant them and click OK I am unable to due to a message of: "Because an app is obscuring a permission request, Settings can't verify your response"
There may be other apps that will run into this issue also or if someone has tried either one of these and they don't have the issue granting it, please let me know

    2. RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect
This one threw me for a minute. I am using the RCA FR and FL for my door component speaks and am joining the RR and RL for my Hideaway sub. Turns out in the first shipment of S8's the ports are backwards so you will need to hook the Fronts to the RL/RR and vice versa. I am told that the next shipment will have this resolved. Those are the only RCA outputs I have used so far as the male part of my rear view camera RCA cable fell off when removing the A6Y Pro so I have to wait for a new connector to come in so I can repair it.

To bad Atoto is not monitoring this thread to help it's customer's a little bit with these type of questions.
    2
I have the S8 standard, I've been running and messing with it for about a week now. The stock launcher, the icons are way too big and there's no way to resize them, so I installed Google Now Launcher and the icons are smaller and I can stack 2 rows on the bottom of the screen. The only issue that I'm having with the launcher is that the Phone app is gone. It's not onscreen and it's not in the app drawer. It's like it disappeared when I installed the new launcher. I still receive calls through it connected to bluetooth to my cell, but I can't find the app to make calls out.

With the radio, I have the same back up cam that everyone gets installed and it worked great the first day that I installed it. I put the car in reverse and 3 seconds later I have video. My car sat for 2 days and then when I drove it again, the reverse cam video shows up, but it says no signal and the screen is black. So I know at least the trigger wire works, and it has to be a short in the video cable itself. But every now and then, I get video on the screen.

I'm guessing there's no way to set certain apps to load on startup. I'd like to turn on the car and the radio app just turns on and plays, but it defaults to the the home screen and I have to load the radio app. I don't use the radio widget, I use the icon to bring up the full screen version of the radio. Once the radio app is running, I have a habit of hitting the back button and it turns the radio app off. So I have to get used to hitting the home button after I load it so it goes back to the home screen.

Google Maps works great, I downloaded over 600MB of offline maps. I don't have a hotspot except when I use my phone, so it is completely shut off from wifi. I can get into some pretty deep woods with it. But sometimes the app gets stuck and you get a white screen and the GPS can't find you. So you have to force stop Google Maps and reload it and hope that the GPS finds you. I'll post up more of my experiences with it as time goes on. But I have to say, this is my 4th Android car stereo and it's really great so far.

I'm still waiting on my S8 Pro to arrive but I was looking through a thread for must have apps for android head units and this comment suggested AutoStart - No root. Hopefully this helps you, or it looks like there's plenty on the Play Store to try out.
