I recently got a 2011 Honda CR-V, and I am choosing either the S8 Pro, Ultra, or Ultra Plus. Is there a noticeable difference of responsiveness within these 3 in head units? Like is the Ultra noticeably faster than the Pro, and is the Ultra Plus noticeably faster than the Ultra?
Be sure to notice the difference between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 units.

I have a new unit S8 Ultra Gen2. It's still on the bench.
Power drain with ACC removed is about 11mA.
Updating now to System 2022-03-24 From an SD card.
Update from here:

Since I haven't used the unit yet, I cannot really comment on the update, except that it seemed to install without trouble.

I did get a chmod error at the end of the install, in red,
Does this look like a problem?

Note I followed the directions in green on the screen above and removed the SD card. The unit noticed that and rebooted.

Tips/Notes
  • Ensure your Google contacts are backed up if you allow the HU to access them. It has been known to delete them. You can disable Contact Sync from the Accounts section in Settings.
  • Developer Options can be enabled via the repeated clicking under 'About', but to access the menu, you need a play store program that will take you directly to it. A lot of alternative launchers provide a way to access them.
  • The ONLY USB connection that USB debugging works on is USB1 --> Phone Link. For it to work, you need to change the "computer connection" to whatever the SECOND option is [untranslated]. This can be selected from the top right menu in Developer Options
  • File down the very end, outer part of the wire harness clip, and it will go in all the way and latch like it's supposed it. Just needs to clear the casing by 1/16" or less.
  • On at least the first batch of S8's there is a chance the RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect and need swapped. The labels are incorrect.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got mine in this afternoon and installed it in my 86 Ford truck this evening. Prior to that I set it up via the AC adapter (sold separately).
I know there are a lot more fleshed out reviews out there but here's my take on it.
I really liked the A6Y Pro. It started out really strong and for 95% of the time it did what was needed. When you consider it's a head unit so it encompasses a lot more than just an Android tablet, it really is impressive. Everything it did, it did well - it just did it kind of slowly. It got pretty sluggish at times when trying to switch between a lot of apps and installing apps from the app store was painfully slow. It should be noted that in just the normal run of the mill drive when you are listening to a single music/radio app or navigation it did great. It was really just when I was sitting in my truck messing with it that one noticed these things. So take those complaints as being a tad bit critical.
In comes the S8. I didn't have any plans of getting the S8 initially but since I am still working on the interior of the truck I am restoring I felt like it made sense to get the latest version before finalizing the wiring and dash.
Right off the bat, it's noticeably faster and more responsive. I could install my apps from the app store about as fast as I could click them. Even the cold boot wasn't much slower than my phone (A6Y Pro would go through the 'Optimizing app' process every time and that took awhile). The status bar has changed quite a bit in that the navigation is at the top left vs the bottom. The three primary buttons work really well there and the split screen feature works slick.
This is a personal preference but while I like the new status bar approach, I wouldn't mind seeing a way to style it differently. I am not a huge fan of colors up there like is seen when a phone is connected.

As I said, there are better video reviews out there but let me just say that if you have the A6Y and feel like you are pushing it, the S8 is the answer for you.
Additionally the Atoto support team is very quick to respond (realize that hours may differ from where you are) and is extremely helpful. That's a huge plus especially with the S8 being fairly new to market.

Items of note that I have found:
1. LastPass and FCC Launcher.
Both need Accessibility Services but when trying to grant them and click OK I am unable to due to a message of: "Because an app is obscuring a permission request, Settings can't verify your response"
There may be other apps that will run into this issue also or if someone has tried either one of these and they don't have the issue granting it, please let me know

2. RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect
This one threw me for a minute. I am using the RCA FR and FL for my door component speaks and am joining the RR and RL for my Hideaway sub. Turns out in the first shipment of S8's the ports are backwards so you will need to hook the Fronts to the RL/RR and vice versa. I am told that the next shipment will have this resolved. Those are the only RCA outputs I have used so far as the male part of my rear view camera RCA cable fell off when removing the A6Y Pro so I have to wait for a new connector to come in so I can repair it.

I have a question, i have the 7-Inch S8 Premium touch screen and its the non 3G/4G version. Is there any way to get a USB TO LAN Adapter or 4G/LTE USB Device to work with it?

has anyone tried it

Better to use a little LTE router via WiFi instead to connect something on USB. In this way, you are going to remove any "driver" problem for the hardware.

Example hardware:
D-Link DWR-933 or Zyxel WAH7601

Hi guys.
Atoto S8 Pro.

OK trying to set up steering controls using a canbus interface and the 2 steering key wires.
When I program them up on the screen I can only get 2 switches to program....
For example vol up vol down.
No problem however my mercedes viano also on the same steering wheel button has call and cancel call buttons as well.
As soon as I try to program any thing else other the the first 2 switches (volume up down) the next switch say call button the automatically cancels one of the volum buttons.

Meaning I can only have 2 controls on the system.

How can I add the extra 2 buttons making a total of 4 button control with only 2 input wires on the unit???

Its driving me mad.

Just curious, have you tried for example tying to hang up wires into the volume down to see what happens if you long press a button vs just tapping the other button?

Does Bluetooth only reconnect to the last phone used? My wife and I share the car, and she told me recently her phone wasn't connecting when she drives anymore. So I went into settings under the phone shortcut, saw the list of paired handsets, and manually clicked to connect to hers. All was good until next time I drove the car myself. My phone wasn't connecting either, until I went into the list of paired devices and clicked my phone name.
This is silly, shouldn't it attempt to connect to other previously paired devices if the first isn't found like every other bluetooth player?
We upgraded from an Atoto F7, and the F7 used to connect to whoever was currently driving (although if I didn't drive last, there was a slight delay if I recall correctly).

Atoto S8 Ultra Gen 2 (S8G2A78UL-N)
with: Android 10 build QP1A.190711.020

Having trouble with some apps seeing a drive on the external USB ports.
I read some software bits might be missing and to install "Files" by Google. I tried that, and it cannot access the USB drive either:
files.jpg

One of the apps, Poweramp music player gives this error:
No Activity found to handle intent { act=android.intent.action.OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE (has extras)}
error.jpg

Note I get the same error in Poweramp's legacy mode.

Also note that some apps, like Atoto's file manager, Blackplayer and Rocket player CAN see the USB drive and play the music files. But strangely Google's Files app and Poweramp cannot.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Atoto S8 Ultra Gen 2 (S8G2A78UL-N)
with: Android 10 build QP1A.190711.020

Having trouble with some apps seeing a drive on the external USB ports.
I read some software bits might be missing and to install "Files" by Google. I tried that, and it cannot access the USB drive either:
View attachment 5625199

One of the apps, Poweramp music player gives this error:
No Activity found to handle intent { act=android.intent.action.OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE (has extras)}
View attachment 5625201
Note I get the same error in Poweramp's legacy mode.

Also note that some apps, like Atoto's file manager, Blackplayer and Rocket player CAN see the USB drive and play the music files. But strangely Google's Files app and Poweramp cannot.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
I have noticed this when I tried to do a software update awhile ago. I instead used a SD card instead and, it worked perfectly.

Yeah, well I want to use the external USB, but maybe I'll test the SD "for science". LoL.
Anyone have a tip on how to get it working? It's clearly a software thing...

@vintagephone I believe your issue can be solved using one of the items listed in the first post of the https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...unisoc-ums512-q-a-mods-tips-firmware.4396339/

I'm not sure if your unit falls under / relates to that post, but I don't think it will hurt to try. There is a reference to DocumentsUI. It's an APK and if there is an issue, you should be able to uninstall it, I think.

Maybe someone else can say whether or not this would help. Or, you can try it yourself.

Remember, anything you do is your own responsibility.

Good luck :)

This looks like a real possibility... unless someone has a better idea I'll give it a try and report back...

Just an update, I reached out to Atoto about the bluetooth pairing thing and they said that this is just how it works, and then gave me some reason it is "by design" for security or something. I don't really understand it and it kind of sounds made up, but the rep mentioned that the bluetooth connected device can unlock the radio so for security it only works with the last known device.
I asked why the S8 does this when the F7 worked as expected. I was told the F7 doesn't need that kind of security so it can reconnect to any previously paired bluetooth device. That's dumb, and this is the first truly negative customer support experience I've had with them. The answer sounds truly made up. Is this a limitation of Android powered head units? Can they only be paired to reconnect with a single phone at a time?

What they told you sounds about right for security reasons.

Can you elaborate? Or are you being sarcastic? I mean, once the car is on, anyone can just add their phone or go into previously paired devices like we have to currently. It's extra unnecessary steps that are very frustrating. What security am I missing?

This worked! Thank you! Note: this installs a "different" Files app from the one currently on the google store. I'd suggest removing the current/new "Files by Google" app if you install this one via DocumentsUI.

They were I think $36.00 a pair 300/w. I got two pairs. Cheap or not it's been a year now and, my jeep still sounds great. As far as stock speakers, I couldn't hear them over my 1000w box in the back of my jeep. Even when I disconnected the amp in my rear I could hardly hear sound out of the factory speakers at full volume. My experience installing systems immediately led me to change out speakers and, I'm glad that I did. The crazy thing is that I used a Chinese android radio before this radio and, didn't have to change speakers.
300 watts ? Guess it's the max power not the RMS lol
I don't really have the same issue, mines sound loud but painful, the quality is not the same than with the factory unit, and it sends like pressure to in my hears and it's very painful and unbearable.
But I will test other unit to see if the speakers are the problem.

I haven't tried this myself yet... but: I can understand this. Obviously, as you say, it's not a significant or strong security feature.
But I also imagine some people might want the opposite from you. Say it's primarily your car... you might not want it easily switched to another phone. And if someone does switch it and then you both get in the car, should it go back to them because they drove last? It's your car, maybe you want it to only really be hooked to your phone unless someone manually changes it. In fact, maybe it should be password protected so no one can change it... ;-) Don't mess with my stereo!
Of course, this could all be fixed by more setting choices...
Atoto heard my complaint and issued me a bluetooth update that fixed it!
I just flashed the update this morning (a bin file, just updates the bt1 system, not the OS) and it now works as expected! If I turn off Bluetooth on my phone, and turn on another phone, it switched over to the other phone by itself! And vice versa- as long as the device was previously paired, it will find and connect to it!
I'm so happy they worked this out, I can't wait to try it with my wife later so she won't hate switching cars anymore.
I still don't understand why this wasn't the intended behavior from the start though. I don't see a con to this.

EDIT: I would share the bin file but I'm not sure if it is specific to my unit or not. The rep asked me to screenshot my build number and bluetooth version first, so I'm not sure if it's custom for my hardware/OS level or something. I'm asking to clarify with them if I can share it.

I had issues registering an account when I used Chrome auto-fill and auto-password generation. When I filled it out manually with a kinda basic password, it worked.

Did you connect to BT1 or BT2? Make sure it's BT1. I think BT2 is for other devices like keyboards and stuff. And if you have wireless Carplay going, BT1 will do what you're describing I think. I just got this unit installed too but I saw the BT flip-flop today when I was trying to disable Carplay and go back to BT Audio and it wouldn't. But if I turn on the S8 and enter BT Audio before CarLink, it works.
Hey snake! It was BT1. I just did a factory reset and it worked and kept the connection!

Awesome! Please post the bin, along with the exact model of your unit. Was this from Yolanda?

No, it was someone who goes by Gina. Before her, there was a guy named Lancy who was EXTREMELY helpful and patient. I've dealt with some other reps over time who made me repeat requests and explain in excruciating detail multiple times, but Gina was ok. She did make excuses for it first, but eventually I got the unit working the way I wanted!

I asked if the BIN file would work for others and was told:
"Since this firmware needs to be updated according to the firmware version actually used by the customer, our engineers suggest that if any customer has this requirement, they can contact us directly. We are concerned that if the customer uses the wrong version of the firmware it may cause the car radio to malfunction."

I asked if future firmware updates would get this feature as well since others on XDA and Reddit have noticed and asked about this feature, and I was told no, they don't see this as something a lot of people complain about or want, and therefore aren't currently planning on rolling this out as an updated feature. It seems like they would still prefer the other function by default (only reconnect to the last phone used. Really?! 🙄).

Maybe if any users here are interested in their head unit working with more than one paired phone reach out, they'll make it a standard feature. I'm honestly kind of baffled by it.

I wanted a screen protector as I intend to off road in the desert and sand gets everywhere....
The ones that came with the unit were horrible, but I found some I really like on AliExpress for my Atoto S8 Ultra Gen 2. These are 9H tempered glass:
I ordered the 153x85mm size. This leaves a bit of room on each edge, about 1 mm. This allows for easier installation and removal.
Install was VERY easy compared to those silly plastic ones.
You can see the edge of the protector in the picture below.

To bad Atoto is not monitoring this thread to help it's customer's a little bit with these type of questions.
    2
I have the S8 standard, I've been running and messing with it for about a week now. The stock launcher, the icons are way too big and there's no way to resize them, so I installed Google Now Launcher and the icons are smaller and I can stack 2 rows on the bottom of the screen. The only issue that I'm having with the launcher is that the Phone app is gone. It's not onscreen and it's not in the app drawer. It's like it disappeared when I installed the new launcher. I still receive calls through it connected to bluetooth to my cell, but I can't find the app to make calls out.

With the radio, I have the same back up cam that everyone gets installed and it worked great the first day that I installed it. I put the car in reverse and 3 seconds later I have video. My car sat for 2 days and then when I drove it again, the reverse cam video shows up, but it says no signal and the screen is black. So I know at least the trigger wire works, and it has to be a short in the video cable itself. But every now and then, I get video on the screen.

I'm guessing there's no way to set certain apps to load on startup. I'd like to turn on the car and the radio app just turns on and plays, but it defaults to the the home screen and I have to load the radio app. I don't use the radio widget, I use the icon to bring up the full screen version of the radio. Once the radio app is running, I have a habit of hitting the back button and it turns the radio app off. So I have to get used to hitting the home button after I load it so it goes back to the home screen.

Google Maps works great, I downloaded over 600MB of offline maps. I don't have a hotspot except when I use my phone, so it is completely shut off from wifi. I can get into some pretty deep woods with it. But sometimes the app gets stuck and you get a white screen and the GPS can't find you. So you have to force stop Google Maps and reload it and hope that the GPS finds you. I'll post up more of my experiences with it as time goes on. But I have to say, this is my 4th Android car stereo and it's really great so far.

I'm still waiting on my S8 Pro to arrive but I was looking through a thread for must have apps for android head units and this comment suggested AutoStart - No root. Hopefully this helps you, or it looks like there's plenty on the Play Store to try out.

    IThoughts
Theres a lot of praise for atoto which there should be, this device is much smoother than the A6 and i would say even better value for money if you can get it cheap and sell your A6. However there a few issues that i managed to find in just 30 minutes. BUT damn, this thing is quick, and only £60 more than the A6 sometimes. I dont think ill upgrade again. hopefully i can sell the A6 for a good enough amount to cover the cost of this upgrade.

    1) Z LINK - this does not work well with android auto (ironic this an android head unit). There is a DPI issue, spotify icon does not scale properly, whether thats my p30 pro or the app i am not sure yet. Right hand side does not work for us in the UK, always showing left hand side arrangement.

    2) finger gestures - we should be able to choose this but minor in the grand scheme

    3) AUDIO - oh audio, so much promise. Can definitely be fixed with software updates tho. other asked for help in setting a nice eq setting, so far a smooth v shape from +5 at the low, 0 at the mids and +6 at the high is doing well. There is a catch, turn off audio delay ( the distances are too small to make a difference imo and makes it sound weird, comes set up for left and side tho i believe).
Subwoofer RCA is 0.8v so be aware. I am not sure how to even amplify such a small signal

    4) in car calls - The new system is SICK. with all the reviews ive seen, i cannot stress how good the s8 handles calls. new pop up is small and out of the way, can pick up and hang up like usual. On top of that you can change weather you want handset or car audio if you want to make a private call! and lastly, floating number pad!!

    5) horsepower - since Z link is for me subpar with AA, i am using headunit reloaded. The a6 could barely handle 720p and it had to be done with software. now i run AA at 720p with hardware acceleration! buttery smooth, feels like it was design by a name brand. I will use Zlink for car play but HUR for AA.

    6) some of my contacts were also delete -_- (Fix: turn off sync for contacts. then roll back changes to your account and hour or to yesterday)
