I seem to have better success installing firmware with USB rather than SD card. Not sure why.
I have found the same but I think largely because I forgot to reformat my SD card in FAT32. ExFAT is visible to the Android system but not to the bootloader, so it looks like it works but then gets stuck and fails once it reboots. I think the last time I updated, I managed to get it working off the SD card but I don't remember now.

Hey brother. Just Checking in. Its been a while. My S8 Gen2 Premium 7" working fine so far with an occasional gremlin every now and again but overall works well. BT-1 still has to be reset every time I try to connect wireless AA. The phone doesn't show up on the paired list until I refresh BT-1 then hit the carlink icon and it connects. I tried clearing and pairing again but it still won't show the phone as paired on startup until i refresh hen it magically appears. I did update the BT-1 firmware a long time ago.
Do you think the newest update might help? Maybe I should reinstall the BT-1 update again?
I can never find the download page and link on their website
I updated to the latest firmware (230102) and haven't had to reset BT1 since. I was having to do it every time for several weeks.

My unit keeps hard resetting itself, it's super annoying. Has anyone found a fix or reason for this?
I have to keep reinstalling and signing into everything, it's very time consuming. Especially all the offline maps to download. Customer support had me update the firmware, which I didn't think would fix anything, but did it anyway just to show I tried everything they recommend.
I think it's developed a hardware fault and needs to be replaced, it seems to be resetting itself in shorter intervals lately.

Customer support has been less than helpful. They recommended updating the firmware, I did. Then they claimed I didn't, I proved I did and they said there's a new update that isn't out yet and I should wait a week for it and try again.

At what point should I just give in and admit they are giving me the runaround and not going to actually help me? I loved this unit for about a half year but it is driving me insane now. I never know when I start the car if any of my apps or maps will still be there. 😡

My android auto wireless connection stopped working yesterday, usb cable connection is still working. When I turn on the unit I get the message"Waiting to connect to device". It then briefly shows "Connection Successful" then reverts back to "Waiting to connect". On my phone wifi settings I can see the Atoto Car Link AP but when I try to connect to it, I get asked for a password?
Any suggestions on how to get it to connect again?
Thanks.

Try going into your hotspot setting and change to 2.4Ghz.
On my system, 5Ghz android auto is still buggy.
A separate bug I found is if I have hotspot auto turn off, it will keep reverting to 5Ghz even though carlink setting is at 2.4Ghz.

I dont think I have that setting for Hotspot. I am on an android phone.
That has nothing to do with it. If your Android phone (or iphone) has 5 GHz functionality, it can almost always support 2.4 GH and 5 GHz. (My last 3 did).
Don't you have a "Band" option under your hotspot?
Otherwise: switch on your hotspot and checl with another phone whether you see a 2.4 GHz network or a 5GHZ network.

Hiya Forum.

I'm a new user of the Atoto S8 Ultima, with a Honda Civic 2011/12 EX GT 2.2L Diesel. (UK Model)

In general, I'm pretty happy with the unit. I fitted it myself, mostly because my local fitter wanted to charge me £1000 to fit a Pioneer unit that didn't have offline SatNav capability.
I'm replacing one of these:
573.jpg

It cost be about £330 for my S8 Ultima, plus £200 in various fitting brackets/harnesses, etc.
My favourite part is the ability to use DS Audio, to have my music collection (And art) synced to the device. (Though I haven't quite worked out how to give it the right permissions to save locally)

I have the speakers, radio, Wifi, SatNav, Reversing Camera all working, including amplifier. I had the phone working nicely with the built in Honda Bluetooth....... However .. I broke it...
There are still a few things to tweak. I wanted to ask the group:

It appeared that my phone was still connecting to the Honda Bluetooth for the first week I had it fitted, but then I (Stupidly) unpaired to test something else, and no longer have the ability to pair it. Has anyone yet managed to connect the device to the built in bluetooth functionality in their car?

I managed to get some of the Steering Wheel Controls working , but not the buttons that relate to the phone. They may be related to the inability to re-pair phones to the Bluetooth Car Kit.

I had expected I would be able to use the SIM card that I have put in the stereo to make calls, but the manual says you can't make calls or text with it. Surely that's the point of the SIM. Why would that be blocked, and is there anyway around that? I am currently trialling 'Softphone' for dialling over VOIP, to get round that issue. Has anyone got a better method?

I have a feeling I have the speakers plugged into the wrong sockets, but that one is on me.
I had them right, then took everything apart and rushed it back together and don't think I put them back together right.

For harnesses, I used the incartec SWC-23-229-NAV and 27-269.
I found the 'amplifier power' wasn't connected in the ATOTO ISO 8 pin socket, so I took a pin out of the spare harness, wired it to the amplifier wire, and pushed it into the ISO 8 pin socket I was using, and that worked well. I have manually spliced the reversing camera power wire, and powered antenna wire.
I have one spare wire for 'Phone' that I don't know what to connect it to. I suspect that is the cause of my problems with the SWC buttons for the phone, but not sure if it's the reason for not being able to use the Bluetooth Kit.

Any advice or encouragement would be gratefully received !

Hi everyone, I have an S8 Ultra and would love to add in a satellite receiver like Sirius. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? Not sure if it would be a USB connection or bluetooth. Just started looking into this as I am unsure if the S8 ultra has the capability to do this.......

Easiest way is down Laos the app and hotspot your phone with radio it works great. If you ended up finding something that worked with this radio it wouldn’t inergrate well.

Hey guys, I've been having a really difficult time dealing with a headunit that keeps resetting itself to factory defaults. The customer support rep (who goes by Gina) has been less-than-helpful, and perhaps a little bit dysfunctional (often completely misinterprets what I'm saying and makes many mistakes in her replies).

I'll get back to that in a minute, for now I'd like to share that she sent me an update to try which basically contained a dump of all update files for the S8 Ultra (both the 10" higher resolution version and the 7" lower res one), and it contained a XLS file in Chinese with what I believe are notes from the engineer's change log!

I'm attaching a screenshot of the original here, as well as what I got from Google Translate since I can't understand the native document. Interesting stuff.

Hello I also have a problem with bluetooth 1. I did a factory data reset, installed new firmware sent by atoto support. But as if bluetooth1 does not exist on the car radio.

The "misinterprets" has been insinuated a couple of times and I too had some of that trying to get my b/u camera working, I suspect that they don't know english and are probably using some less than perfect translation program! I had to take and edit pictures of my multimeter hooked up to get them to understand what i was trying to explain.

Yes that is true, I also spoke to a higher up support representative (thanks to the Facebook group!) and basically admitted that sometimes they have a hard time understanding when we get too technical with the description due to the language barrier.

But the disfunction is more than that. Examples:
-Asking how to find APN settings to get my carrier to SIM and being given a Wikipedia cut-and-paste of how to set up a VPN in Android.
-Telling me to try the latest update to see if it fixes a problem, even though I already did that. I even proved it by showing a screenshot of theinfo screen. She told me to do it again because that isn't the correct version, and then when I insisted it was exactly what she sent, she admitted that she had made a mistake.
-When I explained to her that a full system wipe with an update broke my camera, she said the firmware doesn't effect the camera. It turns out it switched my camera type in settings away from AHD in the secret menu, but she was adamant that it had nothing to do with what we tried.
-She had sent me an update that wasn't for my specific unit, but rather for different S8 units with different screen resolutions, but all packaged inside a zip. No instructions beyond that, the titles were in Chinese, I couldn't read them or figure out which was for my unit with my resolution. It also came with a excel file with engineer notes also all in Chinese.
-I had to remind her of things she had told me in the past, even though it was in the email thread.

There are plenty of problems due to the language barrier, but a lot of this seems like a rep who didn't have enough experience to help me. Most of the issues above I eventually figured out myself and then explained to her afterwards what the solution was (APN settings can be set via an app on the play store, the camera setting that got reset was inside the secret menu, Google translate helped me figure out which unit was the correct update, which I told her for next time, etc). The good news is now she knows and can help the next customer better... but it is silly that I basically wasted hours and days training her, when her job was to help me.

PSA: FACTORY RESET DOES NOT CLEAR ALL DATA.
Trying to fix a problem that causes my head unit to randomly erase the data and downloaded apps, I discovered some interesting things about how the memory is formatted.
I tried a factory reset after a firmware update to clear out anything that might have been causing problems, and I was surprised to find that my internal storage still had stuff from when I first installed it. Folders for apps I had removed after trying them, downloaded media, screen shots... heck, I noticed that even my paired devices in BT1 persisted after factory resets.

This means if you are returning / selling a used unit, or just having a weird bug that you think might benefit from a fresh start, hitting the factory reset button DOES NOT clear all data! Personal data is not only still there, but not all of the apps/settings reset EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THEM DID. So you think a factory reset was done, but certain things persist. It is very strange.

It seems there's the /data partition which normally holds user installed apps and data (which gets wiped with a factory reset), and then another partition for storage that is considered like an SD card. It does not get formatted with the factory reset. Here's the weird part:
Not only is there no obvious way to format that internal memory, some of the system / apps use it for storage. How do I know this? After multiple factory resets and firmware updates failed to clear that storage, I noticed in this thread (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...unisoc-ums512-q-a-mods-tips-firmware.4396339/) that during a firmware update there is a config text that can added to wipe different memory partitions. I tried the twipe all command, and finally all those folders from apps I haven't installed since the beginning as well as all downloaded media, etc, erased. But guess what? It asked me to set which launcher I want to use by default. There are two versions of the included Launcher3, but I forgot about that bc I haven't seen the question since the unit was new! I set it use one "always" and never saw that prompt again until I tried additional launchers installed. Everytime I did a factory reset, one of those launchers was already the default I guess.
Also all the paired devices in BT1 existed past resets. And the camera settings from the secret menu (my camera didn't work after the full wipe, and it turns out the settings in the secret menu went back to standard def instead of AHD- this had never needed to be set after any other factory reset and much like the launcher, I forgot I had to when it was new).

What does this mean?
Well, you might want to use a twipe all script instead of factory reset next time you need it. Because you not only possibly still have personal information on the storage, but SOME APP SETTINGS PERSIST PAST A RESET. That means if something is weird/messed up and you could benefit from a fresh start, a factory reset is not enough.

/end psa

Hello,
New member here. I have the ATOTO S8 Premium 7inch head unit, along with the ATOTO AC-HD03LR 720P Rearview Backup Camera installed in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra sedan. I have been having a problem with the backup camera, and have searched here and on Google trying to find a solution. The camera seems to work. When I open the rear camera app, the rear camera video shows on the head unit. When I put the car in reverse, the back-up video comes up, along with the guide lines. But once the car starts moving in reverse, the backup video closes until I stop moving again. If I have the rear camera app open when I shift to reverse, it changes the video from the rear camera to back up camera, and then when the car starts moving, it switches back to the rear camera view, without the guide lines. If I have the radio playing when I put the car in reverse, it switches from the radio app to the back up camera view, until the car starts moving in reverse and switches back to the radio app.

I have checked the back up lights to make sure they stay on when the car is moving in reverse, so I am not sure what is going on. I have not seen anyone that has had this problem, or a solution to try.

Thanks

I just installed my S8 last night with the aeco2 amp. Has anyone installed this amp? When I turn the volume/gain up to any medium level it start cutting out with fast and loud pops that seem to go with the music along with the green power light on the amp flickering with the pops. The higher the volume the more it does it until it just cuts off and the light turns red. It does this with when turning up front gain or rear gain.
The wiring should all be good as I can bypass the amp and plug the harness straight into the HU and max out the volume with clear audio.
I'm thinking its a bad amp and have a exchange with amazon already but wanted to see if anyone has had the same issue.

Also, every time the HU boots, it auto launches the DAB+ app. Is there a way to stop this and even auto launch AA?

So I got an Atoto s8 pro last year, I didn't really have a chance to test it until now as my car was stored for the winter. Do you guys have issues too with the Torque pro app? Like, it installs an outdated version from the Play store, tells me there's an update available, and refuse to update it. I tried to update the head unit firmware from the system menu hoping it would fix the issue but it just points me to a dead website.

I'm using the custom firmware provided a few pages back. I get what you mean, you have an android phone. That firmware works flawlessly. I have had issues with stock firmware that I don't have with this firmware.
That isn't a firmware, it's a kernel with some tweaks.
If he's asking for a rom that supports wireless AA, the stock one does it. If he downloads Mario's kernel but his rom still isn't one of the modern ones that supports wireless AA, it still won't work. The kernel just has some tweaks that change how background tasks are handled, it won't introduce CarLink features his rom doesn't already have.

BTW, relevant to us Atoto users: If you haven't tried VIVID launcher recently, it's worth trying again now.
It was originally designed for a different radio type (not FYT), but over time they added compatibility with more hardware.
I just tried it again on my Atoto S8 Ultra and for the first time ever, my audio sources work the way I expected them to from the factory!
If you play something from a connected bluetooth phone, it will automatically switch to BT as a source and pause local playback! And their music widget acts a universal control for anything that is playing, whether it is Spotify, youtube, Bluetooth streaming, etc.

I've been asking Atoto for this since I first tried their head unit, I was ready to give up thinking it'll never happen!

    hello,

ahhh you are right, that is a gen 1 devices. I'm so sorry, no I don't think there's support for Carlink 2.0 on that hardware.
The FYT devices that have compatibility are the UIS 7862/8581, and it requires working with the specific bluetooth/wifi hardware as well (it's not just an app, it's tied into things integrated into the system). It's possible but as far as I know no one has done it and there is not enough demand for anyone to have reserve engineered it.

    Tips/Notes
    • Ensure your Google contacts are backed up if you allow the HU to access them. It has been known to delete them. You can disable Contact Sync from the Accounts section in Settings.
    • Developer Options can be enabled via the repeated clicking under 'About', but to access the menu, you need a play store program that will take you directly to it. A lot of alternative launchers provide a way to access them.
    • The ONLY USB connection that USB debugging works on is USB1 --> Phone Link. For it to work, you need to change the "computer connection" to whatever the SECOND option is [untranslated]. This can be selected from the top right menu in Developer Options
    • File down the very end, outer part of the wire harness clip, and it will go in all the way and latch like it's supposed it. Just needs to clear the casing by 1/16" or less.
    • On at least the first batch of S8's there is a chance the RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect and need swapped. The labels are incorrect.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got mine in this afternoon and installed it in my 86 Ford truck this evening. Prior to that I set it up via the AC adapter (sold separately).
I know there are a lot more fleshed out reviews out there but here's my take on it.
I really liked the A6Y Pro. It started out really strong and for 95% of the time it did what was needed. When you consider it's a head unit so it encompasses a lot more than just an Android tablet, it really is impressive. Everything it did, it did well - it just did it kind of slowly. It got pretty sluggish at times when trying to switch between a lot of apps and installing apps from the app store was painfully slow. It should be noted that in just the normal run of the mill drive when you are listening to a single music/radio app or navigation it did great. It was really just when I was sitting in my truck messing with it that one noticed these things. So take those complaints as being a tad bit critical.
In comes the S8. I didn't have any plans of getting the S8 initially but since I am still working on the interior of the truck I am restoring I felt like it made sense to get the latest version before finalizing the wiring and dash.
Right off the bat, it's noticeably faster and more responsive. I could install my apps from the app store about as fast as I could click them. Even the cold boot wasn't much slower than my phone (A6Y Pro would go through the 'Optimizing app' process every time and that took awhile). The status bar has changed quite a bit in that the navigation is at the top left vs the bottom. The three primary buttons work really well there and the split screen feature works slick.
This is a personal preference but while I like the new status bar approach, I wouldn't mind seeing a way to style it differently. I am not a huge fan of colors up there like is seen when a phone is connected.

As I said, there are better video reviews out there but let me just say that if you have the A6Y and feel like you are pushing it, the S8 is the answer for you.
Additionally the Atoto support team is very quick to respond (realize that hours may differ from where you are) and is extremely helpful. That's a huge plus especially with the S8 being fairly new to market.

Items of note that I have found:
    1. LastPass and FCC Launcher.
Both need Accessibility Services but when trying to grant them and click OK I am unable to due to a message of: "Because an app is obscuring a permission request, Settings can't verify your response"
There may be other apps that will run into this issue also or if someone has tried either one of these and they don't have the issue granting it, please let me know

    2. RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect
This one threw me for a minute. I am using the RCA FR and FL for my door component speaks and am joining the RR and RL for my Hideaway sub. Turns out in the first shipment of S8's the ports are backwards so you will need to hook the Fronts to the RL/RR and vice versa. I am told that the next shipment will have this resolved. Those are the only RCA outputs I have used so far as the male part of my rear view camera RCA cable fell off when removing the A6Y Pro so I have to wait for a new connector to come in so I can repair it.

To bad Atoto is not monitoring this thread to help it's customer's a little bit with these type of questions.

Guys, there's a new radio app available for the Atoto S8!!! I already tested this and it actually works!
It's the only radio app besides the native one (well and any from other FYT head units) that actually works with our head unit. :D
    2
I have the S8 standard, I've been running and messing with it for about a week now. The stock launcher, the icons are way too big and there's no way to resize them, so I installed Google Now Launcher and the icons are smaller and I can stack 2 rows on the bottom of the screen. The only issue that I'm having with the launcher is that the Phone app is gone. It's not onscreen and it's not in the app drawer. It's like it disappeared when I installed the new launcher. I still receive calls through it connected to bluetooth to my cell, but I can't find the app to make calls out.

With the radio, I have the same back up cam that everyone gets installed and it worked great the first day that I installed it. I put the car in reverse and 3 seconds later I have video. My car sat for 2 days and then when I drove it again, the reverse cam video shows up, but it says no signal and the screen is black. So I know at least the trigger wire works, and it has to be a short in the video cable itself. But every now and then, I get video on the screen.

I'm guessing there's no way to set certain apps to load on startup. I'd like to turn on the car and the radio app just turns on and plays, but it defaults to the the home screen and I have to load the radio app. I don't use the radio widget, I use the icon to bring up the full screen version of the radio. Once the radio app is running, I have a habit of hitting the back button and it turns the radio app off. So I have to get used to hitting the home button after I load it so it goes back to the home screen.

Google Maps works great, I downloaded over 600MB of offline maps. I don't have a hotspot except when I use my phone, so it is completely shut off from wifi. I can get into some pretty deep woods with it. But sometimes the app gets stuck and you get a white screen and the GPS can't find you. So you have to force stop Google Maps and reload it and hope that the GPS finds you. I'll post up more of my experiences with it as time goes on. But I have to say, this is my 4th Android car stereo and it's really great so far.

Theres a lot of praise for atoto which there should be, this device is much smoother than the A6 and i would say even better value for money if you can get it cheap and sell your A6. However there a few issues that i managed to find in just 30 minutes. BUT damn, this thing is quick, and only £60 more than the A6 sometimes. I dont think ill upgrade again. hopefully i can sell the A6 for a good enough amount to cover the cost of this upgrade.

    1) Z LINK - this does not work well with android auto (ironic this an android head unit). There is a DPI issue, spotify icon does not scale properly, whether thats my p30 pro or the app i am not sure yet. Right hand side does not work for us in the UK, always showing left hand side arrangement.

    2) finger gestures - we should be able to choose this but minor in the grand scheme

    3) AUDIO - oh audio, so much promise. Can definitely be fixed with software updates tho. other asked for help in setting a nice eq setting, so far a smooth v shape from +5 at the low, 0 at the mids and +6 at the high is doing well. There is a catch, turn off audio delay ( the distances are too small to make a difference imo and makes it sound weird, comes set up for left and side tho i believe).
Subwoofer RCA is 0.8v so be aware. I am not sure how to even amplify such a small signal

    4) in car calls - The new system is SICK. with all the reviews ive seen, i cannot stress how good the s8 handles calls. new pop up is small and out of the way, can pick up and hang up like usual. On top of that you can change weather you want handset or car audio if you want to make a private call! and lastly, floating number pad!!

    5) horsepower - since Z link is for me subpar with AA, i am using headunit reloaded. The a6 could barely handle 720p and it had to be done with software. now i run AA at 720p with hardware acceleration! buttery smooth, feels like it was design by a name brand. I will use Zlink for car play but HUR for AA.

    6) some of my contacts were also delete -_- (Fix: turn off sync for contacts. then roll back changes to your account and hour or to yesterday)
