Hello, I have recently bought the Atoto s8 ultra plus gen 2, so far I really like the device with a few caveats and I'm hoping maybe someone here can help with maybe a workaround or havk or something to get around my issues.

1- No notification sounds whatsoever, I really need these for my purposes, any one know of a way to enable this?

2 - is there a way to where when I turn off my car for a short amount of time like 5-10 mins I would like the stereo to not kill my apps I have up and running maybe for like an hour or some set time? Is this possible in any way?

3 - Whenever I have my phone 🤙 connected to BT and I do a video chat with someone it locks me to the phone app, I don't want this.

Other than this and one other app saying it needs location when it already has it, this device is great, not sure why this being there best device they don't offer it in at least 1080 if not 2k lol.

Do you mean from the phone or from the OS? The way the unit handles BT audio, it's considered a "source" much like the aux input, radio tuner, etc. If you switch to another source it will mute the last one. If you're on Bt1, you'll hear your phone notifications. If you switch to any other "source", all those notifications are silenced.

I actually don't like this as well. I've been talking with their support reps about finding a way around it- so far we have an experimental setup that's sort-of-almost-close to what I want it to do, but not quite there yet.
The other option is to use carlink instead of BT1, since Android Auto / Carplay works inside this app and is considered a system sound like any other sound Android would play regardless of "source" mode. But I don't always want to connect my phone (wired is an extra hassle and wireless sucks my battery), so really I want to get the BT working. I can go into detail re: what we are trying to do and how but it's beyond the scope of what I want to type here.
2 - is there a way to where when I turn off my car for a short amount of time like 5-10 mins I would like the stereo to not kill my apps I have up and running maybe for like an hour or some set time? Is this possible in any way?

Yes, there's actually a firmware kernel you can flash from a guy here named Mario Dantas which can prevent apps from closing in sleep. It's got a lot of other goodies as well and overall makes the unit feel smoother. Its on XDA here.

3 - Whenever I have my phone 🤙 connected to BT and I do a video chat with someone it locks me to the phone app, I don't want this.

Yes, this is because it considers it a call and the assumption is all calls take priority over anything else on screen. This should be the case even if regular call and not video. The only exception is when using maps. You could also get around this by using Carlink for CP/AA, but not ideal for the reasons mentioned earlier.

Other than this and one other app saying it needs location when it already has it, this device is great, not sure why this being there best device they don't offer it in at least 1080 if not 2k lol.

Because at this size and implementation, the resolution wouldn't really benefit much. My 7" unit isn't even 720p (I think it's 600), only the larger size ones are 720 and I didn't even know when comparing them side by side. You're not supposed to be pixel peeping a car radio lol, I don't think major car AV brands offer anything that high for the same reason, and they cost significantly more.

Tyvm for the info, it's all good, butnfor the notification sounds I'm referring to the notifications on the radio itself not the phone, like from apps I'm running on the radio

I'm under the assumption it works with all 7862 platforms
I have been using this for awhile now and, I wanted to thank you again for this info you shared here. I works perfectly. I can't understand who would use the radio without this mod. Connection is smooth and quick. I also found that unistalling Google maps on my phone and, just keeping Waze on my phone makes Waze work great wirelessly on my radio. I have no connection issues after this mod. I wish I had of installed this mod long ago but, oh well I have it now and, I'm good to go.I thank Heaven for Xda and, all of the knowledgeable people here like yourself. 🙏

First of all All the credit is Mario's not mine.
My S8G2 was extremely inconsistent, sometimes at work like it was supposed to but most of the time I spent my ride to work trying to get it to connect to my phone it was very frustrating. After I installed Mario’s firmware I’ve had issues only a few times.
When that happens I just press the reset button, Wait to reboot and all is well again. I think it’s an apple CP glitch. Will show waiting for device then connection approved, but immediately go back to waiting for device to connect like it’s stuck in a loop. not sure what to do about that, but still 10 times better than what it was. I sat ACP up with NoKill and set CarLink app to auto start and didn’t seem to make any difference. I have noticed every time I installed a third-party launcher, carlink will go to crap. BT-1 is supposed to be for phone and BT music. CarLink uses wifi or USB feathering. I noticed before Mario I would have to turn BT-1 off, wait for wifi to connect then turn it back on to get CarPlay to work. Either way you do it you cannot use your phone to connect HU to the Internet if you are using CarLink .

I'm not sure what Google Auto Wireless is, but there's Android Auto Wireless which works with their official updates as of almost a year ago.
It's gotten pretty good, too!

I don't know the build numbers because I think they might differ from individual variants (Ultra vs Standard vs etc), but the firmware dated at the end of December 2021 added the functionality, and it's been out of Beta since I think at least March of 2022.
The firmware it ships from the factory with is often the earlier ones so they recommend you do an update when you ask customer service about it.

There's a whole changelog on their website as of recently, they started sharing that with users if you own one of their products and download an update for it.

BTW, relevant to us Atoto users: If you haven't tried VIVID launcher recently, it's worth trying again now.
It was originally designed for a different radio type (not FYT), but over time they added compatibility with more hardware.
I just tried it again on my Atoto S8 Ultra and for the first time ever, my audio sources work the way I expected them to from the factory!
If you play something from a connected bluetooth phone, it will automatically switch to BT as a source and pause local playback! And their music widget acts a universal control for anything that is playing, whether it is Spotify, youtube, Bluetooth streaming, etc.

I've been asking Atoto for this since I first tried their head unit, I was ready to give up thinking it'll never happen!

I'm using the custom firmware provided a few pages back. I get what you mean, you have an android phone. That firmware works flawlessly. I have had issues with stock firmware that I don't have with this firmware.

That isn't a firmware, it's a kernel with some tweaks.
If he's asking for a rom that supports wireless AA, the stock one does it. If he downloads Mario's kernel but his rom still isn't one of the modern ones that supports wireless AA, it still won't work. The kernel just has some tweaks that change how background tasks are handled, it won't introduce CarLink features his rom doesn't already have.

It's in the titles. S8g2 means gen 2. CarLink is the name of the app internally that enables Carplay and Android Auto. Version 2.0 supports wireless.

If you have a gen 2, you have it. There isn't a rom without it afaik. Good luck figuring out what you are trying to do.

Only assumption is this model... it really is a Gen1 model. atoto confirmed this to me again 🙂

ahhh you are right, that is a gen 1 devices. I'm so sorry, no I don't think there's support for Carlink 2.0 on that hardware.
The FYT devices that have compatibility are the UIS 7862/8581, and it requires working with the specific bluetooth/wifi hardware as well (it's not just an app, it's tied into things integrated into the system). It's possible but as far as I know no one has done it and there is not enough demand for anyone to have reserve engineered it.

I tried it a few months ago it worked ok as far as launchers go. I usually keep mine on Apple Car Play, so it was unnecessary. Might give it another go

Hi,

i want to upgrade the firmware of the S8 Ultra Gen 2, but no matter if I use a sd card or usb stick (ext, fat32, ntfs) nothing happens after I insert it. The files are directly under root.
I have an older firmware with some config files, with this the popup for the firmware pops up a complete reset happens but the firmware afterwards is still the same.

Is there a way to force the upgrade

Thanks

Well, the firmware I get is for Gen2, mine is gen1. Would someone patch the firmware for me and sign it, please. My English is too bad to understand exactly what to do. I found the latest firmware for it.

First of all, what FM are you running?
I'm running MD modded. It corrected the bugs that the OEM FW wouldn't. I'm not using the latest MD FW only because I've been busy the past few days.
    And use this https://forum.xda-developers.com/attachments/config-txt.5705919/
Thanks a lot for the answer. At the moment i’m using the original Fw. I will try ti find some information on the Md modded Fw.

If anyone is using the Atoto Dash cam but wants to use another OEM FW you'll need this DVR CAM.apk
Your Google drive link isn't public and requires anyone wishing to download to submit their email and request access.

Edit: same goes for whatever you linked to in the previous post.

So I can just drop this on a FAT32 USB drive and update my S8 Pro like the MD FW?

I was planning on just updating the MD FW until i saw this.

I just went for it, worked perfectly. Thanks!!

I found an update for the Atoto AC-444P2 USB DVR Dash Camera v.1.41 if anyone needs it.

What’s the release date? Anything new to report? Either way, I’d like a copy, please! 🙏🏻

Edit: Annnnddd… it’s right there. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I’m not quite with it yet today. Sorry, Mate!

    Tips/Notes
    • Ensure your Google contacts are backed up if you allow the HU to access them. It has been known to delete them. You can disable Contact Sync from the Accounts section in Settings.
    • Developer Options can be enabled via the repeated clicking under 'About', but to access the menu, you need a play store program that will take you directly to it. A lot of alternative launchers provide a way to access them.
    • The ONLY USB connection that USB debugging works on is USB1 --> Phone Link. For it to work, you need to change the "computer connection" to whatever the SECOND option is [untranslated]. This can be selected from the top right menu in Developer Options
    • File down the very end, outer part of the wire harness clip, and it will go in all the way and latch like it's supposed it. Just needs to clear the casing by 1/16" or less.
    • On at least the first batch of S8's there is a chance the RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect and need swapped. The labels are incorrect.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just got mine in this afternoon and installed it in my 86 Ford truck this evening. Prior to that I set it up via the AC adapter (sold separately).
I know there are a lot more fleshed out reviews out there but here's my take on it.
I really liked the A6Y Pro. It started out really strong and for 95% of the time it did what was needed. When you consider it's a head unit so it encompasses a lot more than just an Android tablet, it really is impressive. Everything it did, it did well - it just did it kind of slowly. It got pretty sluggish at times when trying to switch between a lot of apps and installing apps from the app store was painfully slow. It should be noted that in just the normal run of the mill drive when you are listening to a single music/radio app or navigation it did great. It was really just when I was sitting in my truck messing with it that one noticed these things. So take those complaints as being a tad bit critical.
In comes the S8. I didn't have any plans of getting the S8 initially but since I am still working on the interior of the truck I am restoring I felt like it made sense to get the latest version before finalizing the wiring and dash.
Right off the bat, it's noticeably faster and more responsive. I could install my apps from the app store about as fast as I could click them. Even the cold boot wasn't much slower than my phone (A6Y Pro would go through the 'Optimizing app' process every time and that took awhile). The status bar has changed quite a bit in that the navigation is at the top left vs the bottom. The three primary buttons work really well there and the split screen feature works slick.
This is a personal preference but while I like the new status bar approach, I wouldn't mind seeing a way to style it differently. I am not a huge fan of colors up there like is seen when a phone is connected.

As I said, there are better video reviews out there but let me just say that if you have the A6Y and feel like you are pushing it, the S8 is the answer for you.
Additionally the Atoto support team is very quick to respond (realize that hours may differ from where you are) and is extremely helpful. That's a huge plus especially with the S8 being fairly new to market.

Items of note that I have found:
    1. LastPass and FCC Launcher.
Both need Accessibility Services but when trying to grant them and click OK I am unable to due to a message of: "Because an app is obscuring a permission request, Settings can't verify your response"
There may be other apps that will run into this issue also or if someone has tried either one of these and they don't have the issue granting it, please let me know

    2. RCA Rear and Front outputs are incorrect
This one threw me for a minute. I am using the RCA FR and FL for my door component speaks and am joining the RR and RL for my Hideaway sub. Turns out in the first shipment of S8's the ports are backwards so you will need to hook the Fronts to the RL/RR and vice versa. I am told that the next shipment will have this resolved. Those are the only RCA outputs I have used so far as the male part of my rear view camera RCA cable fell off when removing the A6Y Pro so I have to wait for a new connector to come in so I can repair it.

To bad Atoto is not monitoring this thread to help it's customer's a little bit with these type of questions.
    3
I've rooted phones before but what do I gain/loose by rooting my headunit?

For the vast majority of users they don't need to root. If the system does what they want then leave well enough alone.

I've rooted all my Android devices since the original Google G1, with the exception of my Sony TVs. For me, rooting gives me full control of my device. I can backup all my apps along with their settings and I can easily restore them. I can block ads (I hate the ads in Waze). I can transfer files back and forth via ADB wireless for the ATOTO (none of the usb ports work for ADB). For the ATOTO, I want to fix the bloody buttons that don't open the correct app. Why in the world would I want the microphone button to open Google Voice Search and search the web instead of Google Assistant that I can open apps and have it make calls with. The AC-44F5 also is hard coded to open the FCAM app instead of being able to change it to open the HDDVR app.

I was really dissapointed to loose the rear cam calibration settings after spending 90 minutes measuring and calibrating the rear camera. So I was not going to go through that again unless I can backup the apps and the settings. Swift Backup gives me that.

So root if you want full control over your device, otherwise leave well enough alone and run the stock firmware.

Guys, there's a new radio app available for the Atoto S8!!! I already tested this and it actually works!
It's the only radio app besides the native one (well and any from other FYT head units) that actually works with our head unit. :D
    2
I have the S8 standard, I've been running and messing with it for about a week now. The stock launcher, the icons are way too big and there's no way to resize them, so I installed Google Now Launcher and the icons are smaller and I can stack 2 rows on the bottom of the screen. The only issue that I'm having with the launcher is that the Phone app is gone. It's not onscreen and it's not in the app drawer. It's like it disappeared when I installed the new launcher. I still receive calls through it connected to bluetooth to my cell, but I can't find the app to make calls out.

With the radio, I have the same back up cam that everyone gets installed and it worked great the first day that I installed it. I put the car in reverse and 3 seconds later I have video. My car sat for 2 days and then when I drove it again, the reverse cam video shows up, but it says no signal and the screen is black. So I know at least the trigger wire works, and it has to be a short in the video cable itself. But every now and then, I get video on the screen.

I'm guessing there's no way to set certain apps to load on startup. I'd like to turn on the car and the radio app just turns on and plays, but it defaults to the the home screen and I have to load the radio app. I don't use the radio widget, I use the icon to bring up the full screen version of the radio. Once the radio app is running, I have a habit of hitting the back button and it turns the radio app off. So I have to get used to hitting the home button after I load it so it goes back to the home screen.

Google Maps works great, I downloaded over 600MB of offline maps. I don't have a hotspot except when I use my phone, so it is completely shut off from wifi. I can get into some pretty deep woods with it. But sometimes the app gets stuck and you get a white screen and the GPS can't find you. So you have to force stop Google Maps and reload it and hope that the GPS finds you. I'll post up more of my experiences with it as time goes on. But I have to say, this is my 4th Android car stereo and it's really great so far.
