audio crackle / distortions with Galaxy Note 3 (hlte) on LineageOS 14.1

Hi, I am using my Galaxy Note 3 SM-N9005 since August 2017 with LineageOS 14.1 and I am happy except ONE thing:

When I play audio with some apps like
Podcast Addict (downloaded and streamed Podcasts), Bubble UPNP (local files and files over network)

the cound crackles and is destorted when any system sound is played simultaniously. This happens for some seconds and is clear again after some seconds when the system sound playpack has finished (most system sounds have a short duration)

BUT this does NOT happen when I playback audio with apps like Soundcoud, DLF Audio (live radio streming app)

I have already uninstalled AudioFX system app, played around with e. g. audio visualization on lock screen (on/off), or toggling some system preferences related to audio notifications etc. with no positive effects on the problem. I am also updating to every new nightly build with no effect.

I was thinking that this problem occured with one of the nightly builds after August 2017. But it is highly likely that I just did not use one of the above mention apps with the problem in the first weeks of usage of LineageOS. I am not sure about that.

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour? Or has anyone fixed it? I know this is not crucial to every day use of my device. But whenever I tell people to switch over from Samsung stock ROM to LineageOS - for example my wife with the same device and (outdated!) Samsung stock ROM - they are questioning my advice when they notice the sound crackling on my device. It is somewhat awkward and annoying...

Any help or idea appreciated.

Hi, I thought I was the only one with this problem, "good" to have a companion...

No, I sadly have no solution to it yet. Nobody except you answered my post until now.

Do you have the same hardware/firmware setup? I have the SM-N9005 Model and "International hlte" firmware version of lineageos 14.1. My baseband version is N9005XXUGBPB1. Can you tell me your firmware and baseband version?

And another question is: when did your problem begin? And does it persist over a nightly flash update if any?

Maybe we those informations could be helpful to us or others to find a solution on the cracke crackling audio.

yes i have the same SM-9005 hlte with lineage os 14.1 and the same baseband version . this problem started once i installed the rom . i installed it 2 days ago . i couldn't install the nightly flash update don't know why . when i press install the phone go to custom recovery twrp without installing the update .
i hope we can solve this problem . i loved this rom actually and this is the only problem i faced in it except the update.

Hi Stejai, did I misunderstand you? This is about crackling audio, not missing audio. Or do you mean that you have the crackle sound issue through earphones but not through the speaker? Anyway, this seems to be another problem...
@bastaway01: Ok, thanks for your info! To adress your update-problem:
I am using Lineage Downloader Premium App. With this, updates work like a chime. With the native update-function I had the same problem. But it is okay to get notifications from the native system (new update), but then to open Lineage Downloader Premium to let it update your ROM. It askes for root access (I grant it temporarily), I push refresh updates, then it shows the latest nightly with changes listed, and then I can push the flash button. The device reboots, goes into twrp, flashes and reboots into system again. Works fine, no further user action needed!

Hello bugs.bunny23,
It started with distorted sound, irrespective of earphone's or speaker's. Then in a fee hours time lost audio via the speakers.
Backtracked the apps I installed and reinstalled them , all except one - related to the carrier. Now I have audio that is fully functional.

Hi Stejai, thanks for the answer. Your problem seems to be slightly different. I can exactly reproduce my issue and it stays constantly the same. Also I just have the problem when outputting audio from the main speaker. Neither Bluetooth nor earphones have this issue.

But it your problem encourages me to try to factory reset and fully flash a complete lineage ROM again (wich I never did yet). Also I would do the same with the baseband version. I will report any changes here, when I am done (could take a while).

Hi to all, I have done some flashing with former full wipe. I have tried the latest official nightly lineage os 14.1 update, also Resurrection Remix OS 6.0.0 official (Android 8.1), Lineage OS 15.1 unofficial (Android 8.1). Nothing changed, the Problem persists exactly the same.

But when I go back to my last Samsung Stock ROM (with a nandroid backup), there is no such audio crackle / audio distortion problem. So I guess it is not a hardware problem.

What is happening? I totally have no idea now. Can anyone help?

Hi, it's me again. I googled again and found that the "DLF Audio" app is clean now. Seemes that they have fixed the the problem with their app. And I found that some other "podcast addict" users encounter similar problems with the internal player while skipping forrward or backward or with speeded up playback.
Then I tried some other podcast apps. "Antennapod" has the same problem but others don't. It seems that their players interfere somehow with some audio handling in LineageOS or RR ROM while they don't mess up with the samsung stock rom. Seems to be not quite optimized within the custom roms, still to fix something there. But instead of waiting for a fix in the apps or the custom roms I decidrd to go for another working podcast app. I have chosen "pocket cast". It's not a super satisfieing solution because it costs 2,99€, but now I am fine with it. Hope the developers will fix that issue though. Hope that helps, but if anyone has another solution it would be appreciated.

Regards

Hi, I'm having the same model and the same problem but since it's 2020 and I'm using the latest LOS 16 port it seems that updating wouldn't solve the problem, in fact it IS the problem. I'm a music producer and I've heard the same clicking/distortion on my workstation PC when audio samples with different sample rates collapse together or a high sample rate is being played on unsupported audio hardware or when buffer size is too large for audio processing unit that you have to choose between distortion like this or audio latency (which is not any better). My main guess is since the newer lineage OS roms are based on newer versions of Android, chances are the system is using the sample rate of 48KHz which is a new standard for almost any new hardware compared to 44.1KHz which was widely used in late 2000s and early 2010s, Older hardwares like Note 3 Speaker driver may not completely support this new sample rate. So my main guess would be to somehow change the system sound sample rate or (if compatible) finding a newer speaker hardware and replacing the audio DAC unit OR using an external one. For me it wasn't a huge problem since when I use device speaker I just silence the whole system sound and for me this new sample rate really sounds better, but if you really need to fix this and you want a hint to solve this problem my hint would be: "follow the sample rate". I hope this would be helpful.
