I bet removing it gets rid of the lens flare issue but yea that's not happening here.

It is a glass inlay. Just buy a dbrand skin.

What do you intend to fill the gap with? Also the camera and flashes etc are set into. It? Slap a skin on it.

I checked Amazon & eBay for search string "google pixel replacement back glass" and didn't find anything at all.

My back glass shattered and pieces are missing.

Unless you have a donor device, back housing replacement seems to be the only way.

Seems like now there's quite a few sellers carrying entire back covers for around $30. Example.
