Baseband/kernel/radio problem?

I have been experimenting with the different roms available for hox and have come to like cleanrom and cobra. The issue I am finding is my bars are always low. I've tried a few apn's and then decided to try new radios. They are available in other threads but when I flash them and look at my phones software info, nothing changed.

What is the correct way to flash these and what is it that really controls signal strength (kernel or radio)?

look in baseband that's where you'll see the different radios
