Battery life varies widely with same amount of usage

I think that everyone has this battery drain problem. I have been unable to track down a process or app that is doing this. Its impossible to measure each app or process' current use.

I am willing to bet its something wrong with the software. Something that HTC rushed. I wish I had the resources to persuade some of the talented devs here to look into for us. ;-)

Guys I think I know the problem with this stupid battery drain. It's the HTC Sense itself.

I bet if we get a vanilla android or AOSP ROM or CM7. We can get better battery life same as Galaxy S2. For those who wants a better battery life. I must say stick to stock kernel since. Most custom kernel are OC and hot mostly eating up your battery. And also try Senseless ROM, Since it remove sense stuff. Nice tweaking and improvement. I must say its a good rom if your concern with your battery.
4 Hours of Playing games, wifi, screen on-off, FB, Camera, Video.
I still got like 88-90% since I left home and walk around the mall.

And don't forget to calibrate your battery.

I have battery glitch too on my new sensation.

I'm running leedroid with his latest kernel. Did full wipe, full charge, clear batt stats etc...

In the morning I unplug phone at 100% & use it heavily for a few hours.

It still says 100% 3-4hrs later although I know I hammered it. THEN ill reboot & ill be on 80-70% battery life???

Done that 2days straight now. And yesterday I charged from 70% up to 80% and then rebooted & it told me I had 96%?????

Then it started discharging normally, but again same scenario today.

Recently had a similar problem. Battery would drain 50% or more idling overnight. Checked settings and discovered under wifi Advanced > Best Wifi Performance was checked. Unchecked it and last night burned only 1% per hour. Huge difference. The kicker is I don't know how that got checked as I've always kept it off, and it's not the easiest setting to get to. Not sure if something resets it, but if you're getting unusual high drain it's worth checking.

I see tmo WiFi calling and my account running in watchdog and taking half a percent cpu each.
I don't use WiFi calling and have it turned off but the process keeps running.
Anyone know how to permanently stop it.

Yep its erratic for me too. 100% until lunch find then drops rapidly to 70% by end of working day. Don't really use my phone at work either. In the same usage scenario my Desire HD running Cyanogenmod would drop to 90% at end of work day. I'm almost tempted to switch back to it for a couple of weeks until this phone gets better, if it weren't for the fact the speaker the Sensation, as crappy as it is, still sounds much louder than the DHD. I'm pretty sure its the same speaker but the inability if the DHD case to vibrate due to being solid aluminum pretty much borks it.

Heat doesnt cause the phone to draw more current...Some app or process does. We need to track down what random process is running and keeping our phone awake when it should be asleep. There is no excuse for a phone using 200mA/Hr when the phone is sleeping.
Another reason to flash a ROM that removes Sense from the phone...I believe CM7 will, so I will wait for them.

The discussion at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16580910 will show that there are two groups of stock Sensation - those with excellent, and those with poor battery life.

As you will see in my last 3 posts on the last page of that discussion, I suspect strongly the reason behind this is that some HTC Sensation phones are faulty in that they consume far too much battery juice in sleep mode.

This is also the (tentative) conclusion of TechRadar's review:

UPDATE: We've finally managed to get our hands on a new review model of the HTC Sensation, and the good news is the battery life is definitely improved.

It seems that a combination of data-hungry applications and a slightly dodgy model caused the odd readings from before, although we're not entirely convinced the above scenario isn't one power users will face, which is why we've left it in.

But in normal use, and by that we mean sending 42 texts, spending 49 mins on the phone, watching an hour and bit of video and using the music player constantly, plus a few minutes spent using GPS to track ourselves and browsing the internet for roughly 45 mins, the battery pretty much lasted the day, although it was often in the yellow zone come 11PM.

However, what was more impressive (and a relief) was the sleep state of the HTC Sensation. Where before the phone would get very hot and start spewing out battery life in our pocket for no reason, if you leave the phone locked up for around 10-15 minutes on our new model the power consumption dropped to almost nothing."

Hi all,

I have also the similar problem with my HTC Sensation.

Last time I charged it to 100% and went sleep. I wake up morning and I see that I've got only 5% battery left. (no apps was running, no wifi, nothing, only system).

I've noticed that the problem of drain is SIM Card. If you disconnect your simcard there is no drain. It's strange because it happens sometimes (more or less after every second charge), and if I travel a car a lot. I suppose that phone is trying non stop to check the signal and if phone is laying in pocket or in bag it drains battery.

I've heard rumors that if you change SIM card to newest one, it could help. Next week I will try to get new SIM Card (duplicate) and check if this will work. If not I will sent my phone to vendor on guarantee, because phone with 7H on battery (without any usage) is simply bullshit.

Best regards
Pawel

Check this:
I realized that battery drains faster when carried in pocket or somewhat is dynamic state. When I keep my phone flat on a surface, it will stay there hours together without a single % drop in battery.
Only if I carry along, move it, etc. the battery seems to drain.

Just try to observe this and confirm it to me.
I read that turning off Pocket Mode (Proximity Sensor) improves battery life but i never felt the difference personally … But i did purchased a Anker 1900 mAh battery for like 15 Dollars on Amazon and with a ARHD 3.6.9 rom i get a consistent 28 hour plus of use...

I think this is not the problem.
Look at my today statistics from battery I've connected it later yesterday to charge and about 3AM switched off to see if it will drain.

I woke up about 7:20 and see there is only left 16% of battery.

This are stats from Battery Monitor Widget, look at this awesome drain:

I had the same problem with my Sensation, it happened once in a week approximately.
It turned very hot and drained empty by 6pm or so.

I have flashed Android Revolution HD now, it seems to have improved it. The battery indicator at the top of the screen is more reliable now (half full actually means half full, before it mentioned: you better find a charger or I'll die soon).
I'm using this ROM for 5 days now.

i recognized a wide range of battery life .. depending on roms.
Most i get from miui hyper-non-sense ( bricked and Faux kernel )and virtuous roms. undervolting and 1000mhz. With all of them i had 1-2 days.

with some other roms and with HTC RUU i get 12hrs - one day. only...

There are many reasons for the battery to drain differently like email volume, days that you are away from cel signal, there are some days that you have a lot of meetings and to touch your phone as much and dont realize it.

i had same battery drain problem like you before. it's looked like either your phone or currently rom you are running has " wake" issue when phone is in sleep mode. I don't know what is the cause . i even tried to disable auto sync/ put my phone under airplane mode/ no OC.. ..... but the problem was still there. I also tried many different roms (sense 3.0, sense 3.5, ICS, senless ICS..), still no go. FYI, before install any customs rom, my phone is fully charged, i always clean wipe/factory data reset-wipe cache- wipe davik cache- format system, then using the phone till battery is empty - recharged... Luckily,i found this rom and i decided to give a try : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371892

Then my problem is solved. For a normal result, you should get about -9 mA => -23mA ( this is the best result i can achieve from my phone) .
