battery performance w/ custom ROMs

Is it generally accepted phenomenon that battery performance suffers with custom ROMs?
After having installed arrowOS 11 on xiaomi 9T pro the battery lasts crazy short time, we're talking sub-day.

Do I have to learn to live with it or are there some obvious configuration items I must've missed?

Any particular kernels and/or ROMs that are known for being easier on the battery, off the top of your head?
Really doubt it's the battery itself, as prior to flashing the original MIUI lasted roughly a day easy.
